Full Review from The Auto Channel's Bill Russ This years Buick's Roadmaster Estate Wagon has the distinction of being one of the largest and most powerful V8-powered station wagons in the world. It harks back to an earlier era when almost all American-built vehicles featured the body-on-frame, front-engine, rear drive design. In 1991, after hiatus of over 20 years, the Roadmaster Estate Wagon, now redesigned and brought up-to-date. again became a prominent member of the Buick automotive lineup. Even though it no longer wears its old badge of distinction, four portholes on its front fenders, it has returned to the Buick stable as an up-to-date reincarnation of the automotive glories of the forties and fifties. Up until recently the ubiquitous van appeared to be the vehicle of choice for many American families, and in the past decade many new models made the automotive scene. However, in the last couple of years several new station wagon models have debated, an now almost every major car maker has one to offer as an alternative choice to the van. While the Buick Estate Wagon has been in showrooms and on the street for two years, many significant alterations have been incorporated into the 1993 model . This big versatile wagon can fairly comfortably seat nine passengers. It now rides smoother and quieter and offers good performance, reasonable fuel economy plus many creature comforts. Over 400 miles of metropolitan, suburban, country and mountain driving left these impressions. AppearanceFrom its waterfall grille to its dual purpose tailgate/rear door everything about the Roadmaster Estate wagon is big. It is long, wide and well-rounded, with a huge cabin with many large tinted windows, including the overhead Vista Roof. The wagon theme is emphasized by the vinyl wood trim all along the sides highlighted by a black rub strip, and a built-in highly adjustable roof rack. White-striped General Ameritec ST all-season tires are mounted on shiny cast alloy wheels. ComfortOur test wagon came sumptuously equipped with practically every convenience item in Buick's parts warehouse. It fit the classic definition of "loaded". In 90 degree plus weather with a full load the climate control worked wonderfully and kept the large cabin at a comfortable temperature. The Delco AM/FM/CD unit is easy to set and tune, and has excellent reception. The instrument panel includes a full complement of analog gauges, while all the power accessories, including remote keyless entry are installed. The versatile seating arrangements enable this wagon to seat up to nine persons, or, with both sets of rear seats folded down, to be a flat floor cargo hauler. There's a good deal of secure inside storage space, plus cup and coin holders. Buick's newly redesigned seats are a great improvement over earlier models make all-day driving a treat. RoadabilityRide and handling capabilities of the Roadmaster Estate Wagon have quite noticeably improved. Buick's heavy duty suspension mounted on the ladder frame provides much better stability as well as greatly diminished oscillation - in other words as it wends its way down the highway, it doesn't "wallow" any more, and body lean on turns is much milder. The power steering is responsive, the anti-lock brakes provide straight stopping, the limited slip differential provides positive t traction on slippery road conditions. With the optional trailer towing package, which includes additional cooling and an automatic load leveling system, it is possible to safely tow up to 5000 pounds, plus a full load in the wagon. Vision is excellent in all directions, and wind noise is minimal. PerformanceThis year's Roadmaster is powered by General Motor's throttle-body fuel injected, 5.7 liter, overhead valve, pushrod, V8 engine that generates 180 horsepower and an impressive 300 foot pounds of torque. This combination allows the Estate Wagon to haul heavy loads down the road or up the grade with excellent pulling power right from the start. Its four-speed Hydra-matic transmission shifts fairly smoothly and provides compression in lower gears for convenience when descending long and/or fairly steep grades. This powertrain combo is right for this vehicle. ConclusionsTo paraphrase Mark Twain, "The demise of the large, V8 powered, front engine, rear drive, body on frame, vehicle has been grossly exaggerated". The Estate Wagon is a proof that a Roadmaster does not have to be a "road monster", but, rather, a powerful, luxurious, well equipped, and most of all, a quite versatile means of transportation for both people and things. Junkyard Gem: 1972 Buick Centurion Four-Door Hardtop
Sat, Sep 24 2022During the mid-to-late 1960s, General Motors made flashy, semi-sporty versions of each of its full-sized B-body cars. Oldsobile had the Delta 88 Royale, for example, while Pontiac offered the Grand Prix. The rakish big Buick of that period was the Wildcat, built through the 1970 model year. Just as the Wildcat shoved aside the Invicta, the Centurion appeared in 1971 to replace the Wildcat. Named after a famous 1956 concept car, production of the Centurion continued just through 1973. Just over 100,000 were built, and here's one of those rarities in a Colorado self-service boneyard. The Centurion was available as a hardtop coupe, a convertible, and a four-door hardtop sedan. It was at heart a LeSabre with a different grille and other cosmetic touches. Instead of the usual triple-shield Buick emblems, the Centurion got Roman-soldier badges. Perhaps the world's best-known Centurion is the '72 convertible driven by Kurt Russel's slimy-car-salesman character in the 1980 film, Used Cars. Kurt ends up selling his Centurion to a customer he "baited" from the rival lot across the street. In 1974, the Centurion was replaced by the LeSabre Luxus, a trim-level designation that Buick swiped from Opel. The only engine available in the 1971 and 1972 Centurion was Buick's 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8, renowned for its low-rpm torque. Power numbers for 1972 dropped considerably compared to 1971, mostly due to the switch from gross to net measurements that year; the base '72 Centurion 455 was rated at 225 horsepower and 360 pound-feet, while an optional higher-compression version with dual exhaust made 270 hp and 390 pound-feet. All Centurions came off the assembly line with three-speed automatic transmissions. For 1973, a Buick 350 (5.7-liter) V8 became standard Centurion equipment, with the 455 an extra-cost option. The original buyer of this Centurion probably regretted the single-digit fuel economy of the 455 when OPEC shut off the oil taps in October of 1973. Front Range Colorado isn't particularly rusty, but this car looks like it must have spent some time in a road-salty place like Wisconsin or Iowa. There isn't much left of the padded vinyl roof, standard equipment on all Centurion sedans and coupes. It would have been prohibitively expensive to make this car nice again, so here it sits. This radio played AM and 8-track tapes and cost $363 extra on a $4,508 car (that's $2,615 and $32,485 in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars).
GM China President says automaker could export vehicles from China to US
Sat, 20 Apr 2013At a press conference on Saturday at the Shanghai Motor Show, General Motors announced plans to further expand its presence in the Chinese market. Among those commitments are plans to build four new plants by the end of 2015, giving the automaker the capacity to produce around five million vehicles a year in the country.
In order to make the most of that expansion, GM is adding 400 dealerships in China this year alone (for a total of 4,200 sales points), and it's eyeing 5,100 dealers by 2015. Yet not all of that production will stay in China - GM is planning to increase exports as well. Officials estimate the company will export somewhere between 100,000 and 130,000 Chinese-built vehicles this year - a record. And it's gunning for more.
Autoblog asked GM China president Bob Socia (above) if that means the company might eventually export new vehicles built in China to the United States, and he responded:

Fri, Nov 16 2018Buick is planning a refreshed version of its LaCrosse full-size sedan for the Chinese market, judging by these photos discovered by the site Auto Verdict on a Chinese government site used to certify upcoming new models. We can only see exterior cosmetic changes, but they bring the LaCrosse more in line with the styling of the new Regal and Enclave models, leading to speculation that it won't be long until the changes show up in the U.S. The front three-quarters photo shows off a redesigned front fascia, with slimmed-down headlights that are now tied to the grille instead of set apart by body-color surround, thanks to some new chrome treatment. There's also a chrome wing on the grille, similar to what's seen on the 2019 Enclave and new Regal. The lower front fascia is also different, with new L-shaped fog lamps. On the rear, there's a new chrome wing connecting and intersecting the taillights and surrounding the badge. There's no word about any interior changes, but they'd likely be minor in keeping with the exterior updates. Buick most recently debuted a 2019 LaCrosse Sport Touring version, while a mild hybrid model arrived for 2018. China, of course, has become Buick's largest market, but the picture is less rosy stateside amid dimming prospects for sedans, as consumers flock to crossovers and SUVs. In the third quarter, U.S. sales of the LaCrosse fell 31.1 percent from the prior-year period. Between January and the end of September, GM had sold 13,409, which was a decline of 14.2 percent. Its full-year 2017 sales totaled 20,161, which was down almost 27 percent from 2016. For perspective, Buick sold more than twice that number — 42,035 — as recently as 2015.
