Reese Witherspoon is coming to the dashboard of new Buicks
Sat, Oct 10 2020You've probably heard of Oprah Winfrey's Book Club, but did you know that Reese Witherspoon has one, too? She does, and Reese's Book Club has a reported 1.7 million followers on Instagram. The "Legally Blonde" star each month selects a book to read and discuss, with the common element being that each work features a woman at its center. Now, a Reese's Book Club app will be included in Buick infotainment systems, starting with the Encore GX and spreading early next year to other Buicks. The app, which features audiobooks and podcasts, is a product of Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine media company. "As more women are making vehicle-buying decisions, we want to be thinking creatively about tailoring the driving experience to them," said Buick advertising and media operations manager Kate Hrabovsky. There's another aspect to the partnership as well. Buicks are to be featured in Hello Sunshine's upcoming television and movie productions. The Encore GX is the first Buick set to receive some screen time. Who knows, maybe it will be as successful as the Pontiac Trans Am's star turn in "Smokey and the Bandit." Although the Hello Sunshine production in which the Encore GX will appear will likely be a very different movie — at the very least, the Sally Field character would do most of the driving.
Buick Velite 6 to come in PHEV, electric versions for China
Wed, Apr 18 2018In addition to the all-electric Enspire crossover concept revealed this week ahead of the Beijing Auto Show, Buick is adding a new production variant to its Velite series of electrified vehicles for China. It's called the Velite 6, a plug-in hybrid that will launch this year in Buick's largest market. A full-electric version, shown in the lead photo above at right, is coming later. Buick already sells a vehicle called a Velite 5 in China, which is essentially a rebadged Chevrolet Volt, only with a higher electric-only driving range. This one is based on the Velite concept PHEV introduced in late 2016 at Auto Guangzhou. The PHEV and battery-electric versions look nearly identical, with a wide stance, plenty of creases and a hatchback design that bears some similarities to the longer 2018 Regal TourX wagon. The Velite 6 uses two AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors, a lithium-ion battery and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder combustion engine. Buick says combined gas-electric driving range is 435 miles, which is 15 miles greater than the Volt. Buick will assemble what it calls the "new-generation" ternary battery pack at its new SAIC-GM Power Battery Development Center in Shanghai. The company says the Velite 6 electric vehicle "will adopt a new-generation pure electric drive system to offer customers a smooth, quiet and natural driving experience." Both models get the cloud-based Buick eConnect technology, which allows over-the-air software updates, real-time integration with China's WeChat social media network, and other digital perks. Owners will also be able to use their smartphone as the vehicle's key, and they can also authorize others to use the car through their phones. China has long been Buick's largest market, with more than 1.18 million vehicles sold in 2017 compared to just 219,231 in the U.S., and the country has established aggressive mandates for production of electric vehicles. Audi tops Consumer Reports' brand rankings while Tesla leads domestics at eighth
Wed, Mar 1 2017Tesla supplanted General Motors' Buick division as the top-ranked US automaker in Consumer Reports annual brand rankings, though the electric-vehicle maker finished eighth among global automakers. Buick had finished atop CR's domestic car-brand list for three years before Tesla leapfrogged it. Scores were calculated from a combination of performance, owner satisfaction, and reliability. CR noted that Buick scored big on reliability but not so high on performance, while Tesla appeared to present the opposite case. Volkswagen's Audi division repeated as the best overall brand for the second straight year, beating out VW's Porsche unit, BMW, Toyota's Lexus division, and Subaru. Kia and Mazda followed those brands, while Honda finished ninth, between Tesla and Buick. Consumer Reports took results from 31 brands. Reliability issues related to the Toyota Tacoma helped drop that Japanese automaker out of the top 10. Take a look at CR's results for its Annual Brand Report Card here. That Tesla, Audi, and Porsche placed so high is topical, given some of the issues plaguing those automakers. Audi, Porsche, and their parent VW have been coping with the effects of the diesel-emissions scandal that broke back in 2015. The scandal has cost Europe's largest automaker billions of dollars, and forced VW to put a stop-sale on diesel-powered cars in the US in late 2015. And while the Tesla Model S improved from the "worse-than-average" label CR gave it in its 2015 Annual Auto Reliability Survey, the problematic falcon-wing doors on the Tesla Model X SUV pulled that model's reliability scores lower last year.
