BMW preparing two concepts for Villa d'Este

Every spring, the finest automobiles ever to grace tarmac gather on the shores of Lake Como for the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It's a chance for the most beautiful classics to compete for awards and for automakers and design studios to show off their concept cars under the soft light of the Italian sun. But while most of the vehicles old and new that show up for the concours are ones we've seen before, BMW takes things a step further.
As patron of the concorso d'eleganza for the past ten years, BMW regularly cooks up something new for the glamorous extravaganza. Last year it teamed up with Pininfarina for the Gran Lusso Coupé and revealed it alongside the Concept 90 motorcycle. The year before that came the BMW Zagato Coupe, preceded by the 328 Hommage and the M1 Hommage (pictured above) before it.
The theme for this year's event is the Roaring Twenties. BMW may not have been known back then on the same level as Bugatti or Duesenberg, but Rolls-Royce sure was.

2017 BMW i3 gets $1,200 price increase for new, bigger battery

The 2016 BMW i3 started at $43,395 (including the $995 destination fee). The all-electric 2017 BMW i3 with the new 94 Ah battery will start at $44,595 while the REx (Range Extender) version of the new car starts at $48,445. Both of those prices also include the destination fees. The good news is that you get a lot more electric vehicle for your EV bucks. As we learned in May, the 2017 i3 is getting a much larger battery pack than the 2016 model. Instead of a 22-kWh pack that offered 81 miles of range, the 2017 i3s have a 33-kWh pack that'll take you 114 official miles. In other words, if you only care about battery capacity, you're paying just over $100 per kWh of extra capacity for a new i3 now. Or you can look it as a 50-percent capacity increase for about a thousand dollars. Either way, the cost of more electric miles is not as expensive as it once was. Just as predicted. BMW is also offering the BMW Performance Center Driving Experience for both of its i vehicles, the i3 and the i8, to interested drivers. Car designer Frank Stephenson wants to show you something ... smaller

Influential car designer Frank Stephenson has often thought small. Now he’s thinking smaller. Throughout the past three decades, he has shaped — literally — some of the most indelible designs in automotive history: the modern Mini, the Ferrari FXX track star, the Maserati Gran Sport, a range of stunning McLarens and down to the funky 21st-century version of the Fiat 500. Now heÂ’s turned his pen to fashioning watches. His Cosmos analog piece, made to mirror “a black hole in space” and detailed “with an orange pinstripe which simulates the supernova glow of a neutron star,” features a Japan-built quartz movement and was created in concert with the Time Concepts company. “ItÂ’s the age-old adage ‘car people are watch people,Â’ so it was a natural step for me to get creative with timepieces too,” Stephenson said in a statement. “The collection showcases the love I have for exceptional and emotionally charged design, just like what is required in designing world class cars.” While Stephenson, who is 64, may be best known publicly for his vision of “affordable style” with the Mini and the Fiat, his ethos also translated to the utilitarian. In the case of BMW in the mid-1990s, the company was hustling to market an SUV, and turned to him for inspiration. His team had six months to complete the project. The result was the high-end X5, which Stephenson sketched during a two-hour flight. In 2018, Stephenson established the independent design company, Frank Stephenson Design, based in London.
