BMW wants world drifting record back in US
Sat, 23 Mar 2013BMW just can't stand the thought of the world record for the longest drift winding up in the hands of someone else. The German automaker is set to take a crack at setting a new record by blowing the old one straight out of the water. A driver in China holds the current title after kicking a car sideways for a full 3.6 miles. Now, on May 11, BMW Performance Driving Instructor Johan Schwartz will attempt to pitch a BMW M5 sideways for some 40 miles as part of a stunt to raise funds for the BMW Pro-Am Charity.
We've had the distinct pleasure of riding with the instructors at the BMW facility in South Carolina, and we can tell you that if anyone can keep an M5 at full tilt for 40 miles, it's these guys. BMW has released a teaser video to drum up attention for the stunt. You can catch it below.
Metal ramp crashes through windshield, narrowly misses driver
Mon, Dec 14 2015Someone up there must be looking out for the driver of this BMW in California. Last Friday afternoon, a metal ramp crashed through the windshield of this luxury sedan, barely missing the male driver. Firefighters for San Jose, CA., posted the chilling image on their Facebook. They told KRON 4 that the large piece of metal fell off a truck driving southbound on I-280. The metal bounced off the road and through the windshield of a black BMW X5 SUV. It's not clear how the metal got loose. Incredibly, no one was hurt in this crash. The driver of the BMW probably feels like the luckiest man in the world today, as he walked away with nothing worse than a minor scratch. If the metal had hit just a few inches to the right his injuries could have been much, much worse. The San Jose Fire urged drivers in their social media post to stay safe out on the roads. Bunny couldn't out hop a BMW M3 on-track
Mon, 15 Jul 2013Driving a car is a dangerous hobby, and not just because of other drivers or poor roads. Sometimes, it seems like even the wildlife is out to get you, as evidenced here, here, here, here and here. Now, we can add one more unfortunate car-versus-animal encounter to the tally.
Perhaps believing that this bright orange BMW M3 GTS was a very fast, very loud carrot, an unfortunate bunny leaped into its windshield in a brutal accident at a Polish racetrack. Considering the M3's speed at the time, 89 miles per hour, the passengers are lucky to be okay. Obviously, Bugs didn't make it.
The BMW isn't in such great shape, though. The windshield is in a bit of a state, with safety glass sprayed all over the passenger side of the cabin. There doesn't appear to be any sheetmetal damage, at least from what we can tell from the video. Although there isn't any blood, the hit is really hard. The initial point of impact is at 0:57.
