2016 BMW M3 gains new colors, LED taillights
Thu, May 7 2015The BMW 3 Series gets a few new models and some significant mechanical tweaks for its recently announced 2016 refresh. At the same time, the Bavarian brand is taking the opportunity to make some much more minor adjustments to the M3, too. BMW didn't mention the M3's changes in its announcement of the 3 Series refresh, but company spokesperson Hector Arellano-Belloc explained the updates to Autoblog. On the outside, the sport sedan now comes with full LED taillights, and the exterior is available with new colors from BMW Individual: Smoked Topaz Metallic and Champagne Quartz Metallic. The shades join Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Azurite Black Metallic from the brand's bespoke division. Under the hood, everything is the same with a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six engine making 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Inside, the M3 gains the improved navigation system from the 3 Series that features over-the-air map upgrades. There's more chrome trim around the interior, as well. "Given how new it is, the changes to the M3 are minimal," said Arellano-Belloc to Autoblog. However, the tweaks show that BMW is trying to keep the performance sedan at the top of its game.
BMW Vision Gran Turismo takes M235i Racing to the virtual extreme [w/videos]
Wed, 14 May 2014Late last year, Mercedes-AMG worked up a concept car called the Vision Gran Turismo. It presented it at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but that wasn't the point: the point was that it would feature in Gran Turismo 6 on the PlayStation 3. It wasn't the first concept created specifically for the popular driving simulator - following similar projects by Citroën and Red Bull Racing - and as we reported just a month later, it wouldn't be the last. What we have here is the next.
Looking like an even more extreme version of the M235i Racing, the BMW Vision Gran Turismo concept builds on "the tradition of the successful BMW touring cars of the 1970s" in a heart-pumping, if unfortunately strictly virtual form. It's got more extreme aero than the aforementioned M235i Racing and a striking take on the M division's signature light blue, dark blue and red stripe over white livery.
Underneath the digital bonnet sits the same 3.0-liter inline six as the M235i, but pumping out a prodigious (if theoretical) 549 horsepower - far more than the 333 hp in the actual Racing version or the 320 hp in the roadgoing model. Of course BMW has given it an ideal 50:50 front-rear weight distribution and a curb weight of 2,600 lbs - nearly a thousand pounds less than the roadgoing M235i.
2014 BMW X5
Wed, 18 Sep 2013Is Better Than Ever Still Good Enough?
By now, all but the staunchest of traditionalists have moved past the shock and horror of seeing their favorite automotive brands branching into categories and segments that break with their previously accepted norms. In other words, you and I don't really care all that much if the BMW M3 is powered by an inline six or a V8, or whether it boasts a turbocharger, just so long as the end result is an awesome car. Similarly, we don't get all hot under the collar seeing that same M3 share space on the showroom floor with a brace of SUVs and crossovers... or, as BMW continues to insist, Sports Activity Vehicles.
Time, as they say, heals all wounds, and the BMW X5 has been around long enough, having first seen the light of day in 1999, that anyone offended by its existence has since gotten over it. Plus, the X5 is a legitimately nice vehicle to drive, offering such desirable qualities to family men and women as seating for up to seven, all-wheel drive and a commandingly tall view of the road. For the enthusiast set, the X5 serves up a taut chassis and powerful engine options.
