EPA finally approves sales of 2017 BMW diesels
Wed, Aug 3 2016The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the sale of 2017 BMW diesel vehicles in the US, reports Automotive News. According to Chris Grundler, head of the EPA's Office of Air Quality and Transportation, the vehicles were delayed due to rigorous testing. Following the Volkswagen diesel scandal, the EPA stated that it would review all diesels headed to the US. Last month, the EPA delayed sales of BMW's 2017-model-year diesels due to testing logistics, claimed BMW. Now that the vehicles have been approved, production of the models should begin shortly. While BMW's diesels have been cleared, the report indicates that Mercedes-Benz's 2017 diesel models are still undergoing further testing. "Discussions continue," Grundler stated, but he declined to point to any specifics on why the EPA has not approved those diesel models. Amid the numerous lawsuits against VW, Mercedes has also been involved in suits that claim its diesels use defeat devices, although no major proof has surfaced. Earlier this year, Mercedes confirmed that the US Justice Department, EPA, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), were investigating its diesel models. The 2016 diesel models from VW haven't been approved for sale yet, and the automaker has not asked for permission from the EPA to sell 2017 diesel models, claims Grundler. At this point in the year, it's not likely VW will sell any 2016 diesels. Last year, BMW's diesels accounted for about four percent of the company's total US sales, so the delay is not likely to have a drastic affect on its bottom line. BMW says 80 percent of i3 plug-in EV buyers come from other brands
Sat, Jun 7 2014BMW is feeling continued good vibes from its recently launched i sub-brand of plug-in vehicles. The German automaker, which started selling its i3 battery-electric vehicle in Europe late last year, is finding better-than-expected demand for both the i3 and the i8 plug-in hybrid, Automotive News Europe says, citing an interview with BMW executive Ian Robertson. The i3 is attracting a lot of new blood, too. Robertson said about 80 percent of new i3 owners were not previously Ultimate Driving Machine loyalists, indicating the curiosity factor for the company's new plug-in models runs high, Robertson says. BMW has sold more than 3,000 i3 vehicles since debuting the model in Europe last November. In April, the company boosted daily production of the i3 from its German factory to about 100 units from 70. Read more from Robertson here. Europe's largest markets for the i3 are the UK, Germany and Norway. In the US, BMW sold 336 i3 vehicles in May, its first month of sales here. The i3 was recently rated to go 81 miles on a single charge when it has an electric engine only. When equipped with gas-powered range-extender, the car can go 72 miles on a single charge and another 78 on gas. Check here for our First Drive impressions of the i3.
Which car companies are creating new jobs in America?
Fri, Sep 22 2017Since January, automakers have announced investments totaling $9.5 billion in U.S. plants, creating or retaining more than 12,000 jobs. Some of those companies have yet to announce just how many jobs will be created given their investments, with the location of many of those jobs still to be determined. Specifically, the 4,000-job Toyota-Mazda joint venture plant still hasn't announced its location, with numerous states jockeying for it. Hyundai has plans to invest $1 billion but has not announced a jobs number yet. And likewise Ford is investing $1.2 billion in Michigan without specifying a number of jobs. Volvo this week announced plans to add a second line to its factory under construction in South Carolina, spending another $500 million and adding 2,500 jobs to the 2,000 it was already trying to fill. Then Thursday, Daimler announced a $1 billion expansion to its facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to produce EV batteries and electric SUVs, a move that will add 600 jobs to its hiring this year. Above, we've created a handy pie chart showing you which companies have announced new jobs and how many there will be.
