FCA joins BMW, Intel and Mobileye on autonomous car project
Wed, Aug 16 2017Today, BMW, Intel and Mobileye announced that FCA would be joining their effort to build a sharable and scalable platform for autonomous cars. This project has been moving ahead full steam, with Intel purchasing Mobileye earlier this year, not long after Tesla and Mobileye parted ways. Not long after that, parts supplier Delphi joined the autonomous effort. The group's current goal is to have 40 autonomous test vehicles on the road by the end of 2017. The eventual end game is to create a new architecture that each partner can use and adapt to its needs. The platform will support level 3 to level 4/5 automated driving, and can be adapted to suit brand identity. The main headquarters for the effort will be in Germany. FCA staff will join the already established group of engineers from BMW, Intel and Mobileye. The group expects this new platform to hit the streets by 2021. It's unclear how this will affect FCA's relationship with Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle project. Waymo currently uses modified Chrysler Pacificas for its fleet. In addition to FCA, the trio of BMW, Intel and Mobileye have extended an invitation to any other automakers and suppliers that want to join the project. Intel-Mobileye tech in 2M BMWs, VWs, Nissans will crowdsource maps for autonomy
Tue, Jan 9 2018Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said on Monday 2 million vehicles from BMW, Nissan and Volkswagen would use its unit Mobileye's technology to crowdsource data for building maps that enable autonomous driving. The world's largest chipmaker bought Israeli firm Mobileye last year to compete with peers such as Qualcomm and Nvidia Corp and tap the fast-growing market of driverless cars, filled with a complex tangle of alliances. (VW, for example, is also working with Nvidia.) Krzanich was the keynote speaker at the Consumer Electronics Show. He said data from Mobileye's Road Experience Management software would gather data to build and update scalable high-definition maps. He also announced that Intel would be working with Ferrari on AI drones to cover Ferrari Challenge North America Series racing. The drones would provide video of the races, but ultimately they would provide drivers with data — video that would let them see their racing performance from overhead, but also telemetry information about, say, how they enter and exit a turn. Intel will also tie up with SAIC Motor Corp, which will use Mobileye technology to develop Level 3, 4 and 5 autonomous cars in China, the chipmaker said. Krzanich also said Intel had not received any information of customer data being compromised so far after the company confirmed last week that security issues reported by researchers in its widely used microprocessors could allow hackers to steal sensitive information from computers, phones and other devices. Security researchers had disclosed two security flaws exposing vulnerability of nearly every modern computing device containing chips from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and ARM Holdings. Watch the BMW M4 GTS lap the Nurburgring in under 7:28
Tue, Dec 22 2015When BMW unveiled the new M4 GTS back in October, it said it could lap the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 28 seconds. That's all well and fine in terms of bragging rights, but what Bimmer enthusiasts have been waiting for is the proof. And here it is, in ultra-HD 4k glory. In the video above, you can see the new M4 GTS scything its way through the Green Hell of the Eifel mountains. Behind the wheel is M GmbH engineer and racing driver Joerg Weidinger, who helpfully narrates the video to show us exactly how he tackled each and every corner along the 14-mile circuit. Which may come in handy for those with a season pass to the Nordschleife, but the rest of us are more concerned with that lap time and how it holds up. To put it plainly, the 7:27.88 lap makes the new GTS not only the fastest in the M3/M4 line to date, but the fastest production Bimmer ever clocked around the 'Ring. It handily beats the previous M3 CSL (7:50) and the stock M4 (7:52), and even trounces more powerful Bavarian machinery like the Z8, M5, and M6. There've been a handful of BMW-powered racers, motorcycles, and prototypes (not to mention the McLaren F1) that have clocked faster times, but as far as four-wheeled, standard production Munich-mobiles go, the new M4 GTS is the new King of the Ring. It also just so happens to match or beat the best times clocked by the more exotic likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C, and Porsche Carrera GT – putting the M4 GTS in rare company indeed.
