The M6 shares its drivetrain with BMW's M5 sedan. The 5.0-liter V-10 produces 500 horsepower and 383 pounds-feet of torque and teams with a seven-speed sequential manual transmission. The M6 accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

All 2007 M6s have a tire pressure monitoring system. The M6's navigation system gains real-time traffic information.

Exterior
BMW says the M6's suspension is "built exclusively for sporting performance," yet the coupe offers all the space and comfort of a typical 2+2 model. Changes to the basic 6 Series design include a modified front air dam with large secondary intake openings that provide additional engine-cooling air. Side sills are aerodynamically contoured. Forged aluminum 19-inch wheels were developed specifically for the M6, and an "M" logo is present in the ornamental side slats.

The coupe's roof is made of carbon fiber, and the car has a better power-to-weight ratio than the M5 sedan. A speed-sensing M Differential Lock promises optimum traction even in difficult conditions. Dynamic Stability Control incorporates two driving programs, including M Dynamic mode, which BMW says is "tailored to the sporting driver."

Interior
In addition to the performance potential of a V-10 engine, the M6 offers plenty of luxury amenities. M sport seats include power lumbar and backrest width adjustment. Three-stage heating includes the seat bottom, backrest and side supports. Twin contoured rear seats are separated by a cushion.

Merino leather upholstery covers the seats, console, handbrake lever, door panels, door handles and armrests. The car is accented with carbon fiber trim and titanium finish. MDrive lets the driver select preferred drivetrain and suspension settings at the touch of a button, and an M-specific head-up display is installed. This particular vehicle also has a built-in Passport radar detector.

Under the Hood
The M6 is powered by a 5.0-liter V-10 that develops 500 hp and 383 pounds-feet of torque. The engine can rev as high as 8,250 rpm. At start-up, the engine produces a "comfort-oriented" 400 hp, which is more suitable for urban traffic. A button on the selector-lever cover increases output to the M6's top rating. The V-10 drives a seven-speed sequential manual transmission. Drivelogic provides 11 gear-change options: six in sequential mode and five in automatic-shifting mode.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control, side-impact airbags for front-seat occupants, and side curtain airbags (in coupes) are standard.

BMW says no more manuals, M cars capped at 600 hp

Mon, Jul 6 2015

BMW appears to be approaching a big change in the way that it handles performance. First, the clutch pedal may be a goner from future M models, based on recent statements from the division's boss, Frank van Meel. We also might not be seeing any significant increases in horsepower from some of these vehicles anytime soon. "From a technical standpoint, the future doesn't look bright for manual gearboxes. The DCT and auto 'boxes are faster and they have better fuel consumption," van Meel said to Autocar. Although, he left the door open slightly to keeping them at least in the near future. "It's difficult to say we'll stick to the manual, but we still have a big fan community for manuals and we are not going to take away something the customer wants to have." Van Meel also suggested that the company is capping the output of M models at 600 horsepower. "We're at the limit. If you go on adding more horsepower and torque, it'd probably be over the limits," he said to Autocar. That ceiling does leave some room to grow for future versions of the M3 and M4, which currently offer 425 hp. However, it means that the M5 and M6 with 560 hp are basically at the cap. The limited BMW M5 30th Anniversary Edition already packs 600 hp. Rumors have suggested that the already spied, next-generation M5 might stick with around 600 hp. It seems unlikely for BMW to completely give up competing against the Autobahn-burning sedans from Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Performance could still see a boost thanks to a reportedly lighter platform and optional all-wheel drive. We head back to CES in Las Vegas to check on the progress of autonomous vehicles in 2014. We go hands-free on the highway with Audi, narrowly avoid a collision with Ford and hear all about BMW's drifting driverless car. But first we take a ride on Induct's self-driving Navia shuttle.

BMW slapped with discrimination suit by EEOC

Thu, 13 Jun 2013

According to a report from CNNMoney, BMW has been hit with a lawsuit from the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after revised criminal background check policies resulted in the dismissal of 88 contractors, 70 of whom (that's about 80 percent) were black. A total of 645 contractors were required to submit to background checks at BMW's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina after BMW switched contract companies at its plant.
Though the 88 persons who were not rehired by the new contractor all had criminal records, that may not necessarily be a legal way to screen applicants, as the EEOC counters: "BMW's policy has no time limit with regard to convictions. The policy is a blanket exclusion without any individualized assessment of the nature and gravity of the crimes, the ages of the convictions, or the nature of the claimants' respective positions."
BMW's actions were in violation of the Civic Rights Act of 1964, according to the EEOC, because they utilized "a criminal conviction policy that disproportionately screened out African-Americans." A recent bulletin offering guidance from the EEOC on the Civil Rights Act can be found here, but the EEOC's stance on the issue has been the same for years: "Since issuing its first written policy guidance in the 1980s regarding the use of arrest and conviction records in employment decisions, the EEOC has advised employers that under certain circumstances, their use of that information to deny employment opportunities could be at odds with Title VII."
