The M3's 4.0-liter V8 powerplant has two more cylinders than its predecessor, delivering 414 horsepower and maximum torque of 295 pound-feet at 3,900 rpm. The engine is the lightest V8 in the world, weighing less than the previous M3's inline-six. A fine example of BMW's outgoing high-revving "M" tradition, maximum engine speed in the 4.0-liter is a screaming 8,300 rpm. In the interests of fuel economy, BMW is currently abandoning high-revving naturally aspirated engines in favor of turbocharged units with much lower redlines.
The compact V8 can be paired with the either a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The row-your-own unit helps the car accelerate from zero-to-sixty mph in a claimed 4.7 seconds, while the auto is rated at 4.5 ticks; both times are likely conservative by nearly half a second. Fuel economy is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway for both transmissions.
Stopping power is enhanced by internally-vented, cross-drilled cast iron discs measuring 14.2 inches in diameter at the front and 13.8 inches in the rear.
The majority of the M3's chassis is constructed from lightweight aluminum, helping to keep the weight down and the handling reflexes sharp. Also contributing to the M3's agile dynamic character is a near perfect 51/49 front to rear weight distribution. Reminiscent of the carbon fiber roof panel used on the M6 coupe, the M3's carbon fiber roof cuts unnecessary weight and lowers the car's center of gravity. It also lets the roof edge appear flatter and thus lowers the perceived body height.
Aesthetics
The M3 coupe is visually distinguishable from lesser 3-Series models thanks to a unique body kit, a more aggressive front fascia, a slight power bulge on the hood and, of course, the carbon fiber roof. Inside, the M3 maintains the simple yet elegant cabin of the standard 3er but adds numerous M badges, unique instruments and a fat-rimmed M steering wheel. The rear seats are surprisingly accommodating, and the trunk provides a reasonable amount of space.
Options
A premium package offers power folding mirrors, universal garage opener, digital compass mirror, BMW Assist, Novillo Leather interior and choice of three optional interior trims. The technology package includes EDC, M Drive, Comfort Access, and a navigation system.

BMW i8 pitted against M4 in sibling rivalry track battle
Wed, Jan 7 2015We recently watched Auto Bild challenge the BMW i8 against the M4 in a German drag race of decide the quicker of the inter-brand rivals. The hybrid took a commanding victory in that fight. However, Autocar now has a new battle for the two coupes. The siblings are together again on the Castle Combe Circuit to find out which of them offers the more enjoyable experience at the track. Unfortunately, we don't ever get a perfect point of comparison in the video because host Steve Sutcliffe never does a full lap in anger with either of them to set a time. Instead, he focuses more on how the BMWs feel behind the wheel. Sutcliffe also admits midway through the clip that the i8's electric motor is out of juice to power the front axle's electric motor. That only leaves the hybrid with its 228-horsepower and 236-pound-feet-of-torque turbocharged three-cylinder to spin the rear wheels. Still, Sutcliffe spends ample time explaining the benefits and downfalls of driving these coupes. See where his opinion falls between the M4 as the traditional German sports coupe and the i8 as the new-school hybrid in the video, above.

Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo offers Europeans a pre-M3 performance 3er
Tue, 05 Mar 2013Anyone that's spent some time behind the wheel of the Alpina B7 probably knows enough to understand what Americans are missing with this, newly launched Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo. We've got no lack of M models to choose from, it's true, but the Alpina touch offers a completely different driving character, with almost as much performance. A pity then that Alpina has no plans that we've heard of to bring this one across the pond.
Filling the gap between the current 3 Series offerings and the outgoing M3 (we're not likely to even see the new M3 and M4 until September's Frankfurt show, nor be able to buy one until after that), the B3 Bi-Turbo brings serious performance to the F30 3er. As the name indicates, two turbochargers are used to force-feed BMW's 3.0-liter inline-six engine, for a total output of 410 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. That power offers a big jump from even the BMW 335i sedan, and will push the B3 to 62 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 190 miles per hour. Alpina's own sport suspension underpins the thing, while the power is modulated by way of a eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new B3 will be easily recognizable thanks to its "Classic" 20-inch, 20-spoke Alpina wheels, and a rather subtle, aero-enhancing body kit. No pricing has yet been announced, but you will find a host of additional information in the attached Alpina press release below.
