I've enjoyed driving this clean and gorgeous silver classic beauty in Southern California for the last 20 years. According to the mechanic who sold her and restored her for me, she was in Berkeley, CA before that. So, given how little rust there is, I am pretty sure that this is a "California" car. I've only taken her out occasionally for pleasure and had kept her tucked away under cover most of the time. I am only selling because I am moving back to Hawaii where it'll be difficult to find someone qualified to look after her. The body and the undercarriage is clean and solid; the paint is beautiful without any bubbles or pits. I've proudly received countless complements from passersby. She's a pleasure to drive and has plenty of pep. Engine starts up quickly and easily. Here are some of the repairs/restorations done within the last few years... - Installation/replacement of a newly rebuilt steering box, power steering pump, various steering components & the front-end suspension - Replaced master brake cylinder - Installed a "new" dashboard with no chips or cracks - Replaced the water pump and radiator- Minor rust remedial and paint work.- Installed a new ignition system I am not a car collector nor a car buff so there are a few minor flaws on the car that have not bothered me enough to fix but you should know exist... - Minor rust spots where the trunk lid meets the body. - Driver-side power window motor was deactivated and has been replaced with a hand crank.- Driver-side window has some scratches. - Driver-side door has one light paint scratch which I think could be buffed out. - Shifter boot is worn out at the base. - Clock does not work. - Seats have good upholstery but the driver side cushion is getting a bit thin from usage. - Air Conditioning system is deactivated. I didn't want to spend the money to find out what is the problem on something I rarely use.- Missing tool kit. - Headliner looks worn and may need some work. - Wood trims on both doors have some chips and cracks on the ends. I can send you photos of the items above and any other features if you'd like to examine them in details. You will be purchasing this car as is and without any warranty/guarantee from me. I am available to show you the car at pretty much any decent hours. I am located in downtown LA. Please email me with your telephone number if you'd like to speak to me directly. I require a non-refundable $2,000 deposit via Paypal or bank wire transfer. Balance must be paid with a bank wire-transfer within 7 days of auction close.Buyer is responsible for all applicable fees, taxes, custom duties and shipping costs. Please consider your fringe costs before bidding. Please do not bother asking me to misstate the purchase price on the registration paperwork. It will be cause for termination of the sale and I will keep your deposit. Thank you for your interest. Good luck on your bidding. ALOHA!

BMW's DriveNow car sharing shutting down in SF next month

Tue, Oct 6 2015

BMW's DriveNow car-sharing service is suspending operations in San Francisco next month after more than three years. The culprit? Not enough parking spots in the City. BMW debuted both DriveNow car-sharing and its ParkNow service in the City by the Bay in August 2012, initially launching with the ActiveE plug-in vehicle and later moving over to the i3. While there probably wasn't a shortage of folks looking to drive those cars, it was the ending part of that equation that proved problematic. That's because San Francisco hasn't been able to clear out enough street-parking spots to make the program work properly, despite adding 80 spaces for the 150 cars in the program back in 2014. "We hope to return to San Francisco in the future and will continue to engage with the City on possible solutions that will allow you to experience the full benefits of our one-way car sharing service," said DriveNow CEO Richard Sternberg on the company's website. "In the meantime, we are focusing our efforts on new cities where our transportation solution can flourish. We would like to thank you for your loyal support and embracing flexible car sharing as an alternative transportation method." As far as that expansion to other US cities, BMW hasn't been specific. Bimmer also runs the DriveNow program in three Germany cities as well as Copenhagen, Vienna and London. So, DriveNow apparently has an easier time finding parking spots in London than in San Francisco. Why BMW couldn't use a flexible parking system for its one-way rentals like the similar Car2go program uses remains a mystery. BMW mulled ten, eight, and six-cylinder engines for i8 before going hybrid

Wed, 09 Oct 2013

There's little doubt that the 2015 BMW i8 is one of the most radical and groundbreaking performance cars this industry has seen in a long time. From its unique carbon-intensive construction to its 1.5-liter, three-cylinder and electric motor plug-in powertrain to its concept-car appearance, the flagbearer for BMW's new i venture challenges the very notion of what it takes to be a supercar.
Yet apparently the i8 almost didn't do that at all. Yes, it probably still would've had innovative assembly techniques, serious performance and come-hither bodywork, but according to a new report in the Telegraaf, it was very nearly a much more conventional beast, drawing its power from a V10 engine. According to the report, that line of development never got much beyond the drawing board, but BMW engineers then shifted their focus to both V8 and six-cylinder motivation, going so far as to build prototype cars. The higher cylinder-count engines were eventually dropped altogether after BMW decided to turn the i8 into a hybrid, with the six-cylinder reportedly nixed due to heat management and weight issues. In the end, of course, BMW went with the PHEV powertrain that offers a total system output of 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque - plenty of thrust for this lightweight, all-wheel drive coupe while still enabling an incredible 94 miles to the gallon on the EU cycle. Regardless of how it turned out, it's still fascinating to think that BMW didn't have a much firmer conceptual idea of what it was after when it started the i8's development.
Here at Autoblog, we're genuinely thrilled about this new generation of greener hybrid super- and hypercars, a movement spearheaded by the i8, Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1. But even so, our inner-gearheads can't help but wonder what might have been had BMW pursued a more conventional i8, either in place of, or in addition to, the car they did build. What do you think? Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] In a battle for Nokia's highly coveted mapping technology the auto industry claims victory over Silicon Valley. I'm Eddie Sabatini and this is your Autoblog Minute. In a three company partnership the German automakers BMW, Audi and Daimler are set to take ownership of Nokia's Here mapping technology. The Wall Street Journal writes that the automakers had concerns that the technology might fall under the [00:00:30]control of companies like Google, Uber, or Apple. The purchase, worth a reported 3.1 billion dollars, is still subject to antitrust evaluation before it's finalized; but this early news is already a big win for the German three. Ownership of Nokia's Here tech means that automakers won't lose control of the information systems that go into their cars. The deal, if approved, is expected to close in first quarter of 2016.
