The Z4's electric power-steering system was a first for BMW. Trunk capacity is 9.2 cubic feet; when the soft-top is down, space decreases to 8.5 cubic feet.

Far different in appearance than the Z3, the Z4 displays a blend of convex and concave surfaces, deeply sculpted bodysides and twin belt lines. The Z4 has more sharp edges, especially at the rear, than its rounded predecessor.

Featuring a relatively long, 98.2-inch wheelbase, the Z4 has short overhangs and a low, rearward seating position. Round side blinker indicators protrude from each front fender.

The hood is aluminum, and soft-top components are magnesium. Equipped with a heated glass rear window, the top features an integrated tonneau cover. Manual operation is standard, but power operation is available. Roll bars sit behind the seats.

Other than its two-passenger capacity, the Z4's cockpit is completely different from its predecessor's. The instruments are well spaced on a distinctive, clean-looking dashboard. Full-width dash panels are either woodgrained or brushed aluminum, which looks especially appealing.

The Z4 3.0i uses a 225-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six and is equipped with a six-speed manual. BMW's Dynamic Driving Control is part of the Sport Package. BMW claims the Z4 3.0i equipped with the manual shift can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

Side-impact airbags, knee airbags and antilock brakes are standard. A cutoff switch for the front passenger airbag is included.

Acceleration in the Z4 3.0i is forceful. There's plenty of low-end torque when starting off or passing.

The defiantly taut suspension delivers a reasonably smooth ride on most surfaces. Drivers can hit nasty bumps pretty hard without losing even the slightest bit of control. The Z4's magnificent seats are satisfyingly cushioned and supportive.

The Premium package adds a power top and seats.

The Sport Package provides a slightly lower ride height (about 0.6") from the shorter springs, and sport dampers and thicker sway bars. It's the sport button that really transcends the car and makes it a lot more fun to drive. The sharper throttle response and heavier steering make the car actually drive like a sports car. Without them, the car feels a little soft, and just, not as fun. IMO, the sport button is a must when buying the Z4.

Thermal imagery of BMW M4 DTM pit stop is red hot

Wed, 28 May 2014

A pit stop is a pit stop, right? The race car pulls in, the crew changes the tires, pumps in some fuel, maybe swaps out a busted body panel or squeegees the windshield, and off it goes for another heat. Only pit stops have become the focus of news lately for a number of reasons, whether it's because of mishaps (like the ones that prompted F1 to ban mid-race refueling), new time records (due largely to said ban) or interesting new ways to film the fast-paced action.
A few weeks ago we brought you footage of an IndyCar pit stop filmed from multiple angles courtesy of Google Glass. Now BMW has released a brief clip of one of its M4 DTM racers coming in for fresh rubber, all filmed by infrared camera. Its the kind of technology BMW uses to help optimize its German touring cars for competition, and now the Bavarian outfit has released some footage for fans to enjoy.
The resulting thermal imagery gives you an idea of how hot the car runs (and where the heat is emanating from), how warm they get the fresh rubber before they get it onto the car, and what kind of temperatures the pit crew is subjected to. Look closely enough in the 25-second video below and you'll even see the heat sputtering out of the exhaust pipes as the M4 downshifts into its pit box. (Just don't try adjusting your speakers, the clip is without audio.)

DC fast charging standard on 2015 BMW i3 EV

Mon, Dec 1 2014

The BMW i3 is about to get a lot cooler. No, wait, a lot warmer. That's because there will a few new standard features in the i3 plug-in vehicles sold in the US, including seat heaters and satellite radio. Oh, and DC fast charging. The department head of BMW i USA, Jacob Harb, told BMW Blog that the company is, "now confident enough that in 2015 we will have the right infrastructure for DC fast charging, so it makes to include it standard in the MY2015." We can expect more details at the Detroit Auto Show in January and Harb told BMW Blog that, "you will be pleasantly surprised" by the announcement. There are a few other potential changes in store for the i3, including a configurable keyfob (like European i3 drivers get) and a heated steering wheel. It's unlikely that a sunroof or Lane Departure Warning will be offered, but Harb said BMW is always open to suggestions.

BMW 6 Series Convertible gets a little work done for 2015

Sat, 02 Aug 2014

Truth be told, I've never really found the modern BMW 6 Series to be a particularly attractive car, in Coupe, Convertible, or sedan Gran Coupe forms. This current generation certainly looks a whole lot better than the Bangle-fied Six that came before it to my eyes, but on the whole, I find much of the car's design to be fussy and awkward. There's a new 6 Series on the way, scheduled to arrive sometime in 2017 or 2018, but to hold us over until then, BMW is freshening its current range, as evidenced by this convertible prototype our trusty spies recently caught testing.
Will the changes to the current 6 Series be an improvement? Perhaps. Up front, there are restyled headlamps and a new front bumper, and at the rear, BMW has redesigned the LED taillamps to bring them more in line with the rest of the company's offerings. Aside from those modest tweaks, we don't expect much more to change on the Big Six - the interior will likely carry over with some minor tweaks (or new colors), and it's possible the powertrains could be massaged gently for gains in either power, efficiency, or both.
Whether you think this new look is pretty or not, this freshened 6 Series will likely debut sometime next year, while BMW's engineers and designers craft the all-new version. See it from several angles in our gallery, above.
