BMW 7 Series to get quad-turbo diesel?

Thu, Aug 6 2015

Sometime in 2016 BMW will ask its customers, "Would you like more turbos with your turbos?" Reports are the Bavarian company is working on an inline six-cylinder quad-turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine to replace the tri-turbo 3.0-liter diesel currently used in performance products like the all-wheel-drive X5 M50d and X6 M50d sold in other markets. The current N57 performance diesel is called the M Performance TwinPower Turbo. The new one, said to be codenamed B57 TOP, will first make its way into the new 7 Series that will be called the M750d. The coming quad-turbo diesel is expected to produce at least 400 hp and 590 lb-ft. It isn't known yet whether the additional turbo will be electric or conventional, nor how the new turbos will be sized relative to one another. At least one outlet figures the power numbers will be conservative for this first outing, so they could go up. After its launch in the 7 Series, it could migrate to create the next-generation G30 5 Series M550d, and the X5 M50d, X6 M50d, and X7 M50d. It's unclear if BMW has plans to bring this high performance engine to the US market. Related Video: The video meant to be presented here is no longer available. Sorry for the inconvenience. BMW M2 to pack 365 hp

Fri, May 8 2015

The BMW M2 was spied testing several times last summer, but there has been little news about the upcoming entry to the M family as of late. More info is finally leaking out though, and it potentially confirms some past reports, while giving a better idea of what the coupe looks like. We have to take any of these leaks with a grain of salt, but according to a user on the 2addicts forum citing insider sources at BMW headquarters, M2 production begins in November. This person also reiterates that the coupe uses BMW's N55 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. In this tune, it would reportedly make 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. Plus, an over-boost system would allegedly push twist by about 25 lb-ft at low revs. At launch, this rumor also suggests that BMW might keep the M2's color palette limited to just four choices: Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Long Beach Blue Metallic and Mineral Grey Metallic. Inside, there're purportedly even fewer hues with the only one being black with blue stitching. Assuming these numbers are accurate, the M2 seems to represent a decent upgrade over the already capable M235i. It also uses a version of the N55 but a version making 320 hp and 330 lb-ft. In addition to the extra grunt, previous spy shots show the M with a front fascia akin to the M3/M4.

Recharge Wrap Up: VW's Last Mile Surfer, Apple's BMW i3

Tue, Jul 28 2015

Volkswagen has unveiled its Last Mile Surfer. This little electric scooter – it folds up small enough to fit in the trunk and weighs just 24 pounds – will go on sale next year for around 1,000 euros ($1,100 US), according to VW chairman Martin Winterkorn, as reported by Autocar. Of course, we're wondering why you'd need to pay that much money to avoid walking a mile, but maybe we just haven't walked that far in an interested buyer's shoes. See more at Autocar. Did Apple want to use the BMW i3 as the basis for its own electric car? That's the word from the German magazine Manager, which says that Apple and BMW were talking about using the i3 shell for the plug-in iCar (or whatever) started last fall but are no longer actively taking place, but the two organizations have not totally closed off communication. Read more at Manager or at Green Car Reports. BMW is continuing its efforts to connect your car to your phone in interesting ways with the new EnLighten app. The idea here is to let your phone act as a bridge between alerts about traffic signals and the car, so that notifications can be displayed in the dash instead of on your phone. That should keep more eyes on the road and let drivers minimize those races to the next red light, which will save fuel. At least, it will do so in cities that broadcast that sort of signal information. Read more in the press release below. Traffic City Info Makes Driving in Cities Easier than Ever Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 27, 2015... The BMW Group announced today that it is the first manufacturer to bring the EnLighten App, by Connected Signals, into the car. Drivers of BMW Vehicles with iOS Devices will be able to see traffic signal data on the vehicle's display in real time. The EnLighten app makes driving in cities easier by helping the driver anticipate traffic signal changes, which can increase safety and help save fuel by avoiding unnecessary acceleration. The EnLighten app shows the current status of the traffic light in front of the car in real time as well as a countdown to when the signal will change. Based on the current vehicle position, as well as its speed, the EnLighten app offers a recommendation about whether or not to stop for the traffic light or proceed through. An audio alert notifies the driver about a pending change in the signal they are approaching.
