This BMW i8 gains Alpina V8 power thanks to tuner

Fri, Dec 4 2015

German engineering firm Gabura Racing Technologies will strip out everything that makes a BMW i8 green in an effort to create a much wilder machine. Rather than a plug-in hybrid with a turbocharged three-cylinder, the company will cram in a twin-turbo V8. The firm even intends to produce a limited run of these insane conversions for customers. Gabura hasn't actually built one of these beasts yet, but it provided several glimpses of how it would work at the 2015 Professional MotorSport World Expo in Cologne, Germany. The company stuffs the engine under the front end in what looks like a quite snug fit. In several of the photos, the top of the valve covers even appears to be above the base of the windshield. According to BBC Autos, this mill is the S63 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 from the M5 and M6. Additional tuning with some help from Alpina allegedly pushes output to around 760 horsepower – more than double the i8's stock figure. One of Gabura's own six-speed sequential gearboxes reportedly transfers the power to the wheels. Gabura recently posted on Facebook that the engineers are now ready for the first conversion. They promised to "completely rebuild it inside-out, fueled with racing technology." We're very curious to see how an i8 looks and sounds after such a significant transformation.

Next BMW M5 could go all-wheel drive

Wed, Jan 14 2015

Franciscus van Meel had been a part of Audi AG management since 1996, in positions including chassis development and vehicle project director. In 2012 he was named managing director of Quattro GmbH - headquarters for personal favorites like the RS6 Avant and R8 - but he lasted just two years before being sent to lead an R&D division in Beijing. He returned from exile just ten months later but wearing a blue and white roundel, after being named to the top spot at BMW M. So it shouldn't be a surprise that when Auto Express asked van Meel about all-wheel drive on the next M5, he replied, "If we continue the power increases in the future... then probably the next generation M5 and M6 will have so much torque and power that we need to think about those solutions." It would make sense from a competitive standpoint, too - once the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG went 4Matic, that put the two of the three cars in the segment in the AWD column. And there's no "if" about a power increase: a recent report put next generation's output at 600 hp - that's 40 hp more than today - to power a lighter car. That report said there'd be the option of four-wheel drive, but AE takes van Meel's words as a definite sign that we'll see a more complex drive arrangement under the next M5. If so, then truth be told, van Meel is reiterating the thoughts of his predecessor from two years ago. The new M boss doesn't like the phrase "four-wheel drive," however; in clarifying those "solutions" he mentioned, he said that the car would be rear-biased to remain emotional, with the front tires kicking in to aid traction. BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor enjoys a day in the sun

Wed, 10 Jul 2013

This BMW Concept Active Tourer has evolved for the nature and cycling set and premiered at OutDoor Friedrichshafen, a trade fair in held this month in Germany. The sturdy wagon is tweaked with new materials, accessories and ConnectedDrive features for those who do a lot of their living under the sky as opposed to inside their cars.
Under the hood is the same plug-in hybrid drive system we've were introduced to in 2012, featuring a transversely-mounted, 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack under the rear compartment floor. Total output is 190 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque headed to the front wheels, a claimed time from zero to 62 of under eight seconds, a pure electric range of up to 19 miles, a top speed of 124 miles per hour and claimed fuel economy of around 95 US miles per gallon.
The space behind the rear seats is the showcase, with a transformable compartment that can stow two bikes on built-in, retractable carriers. Remove the front wheel and seat from the bikes, then the frames can be locked into place using two rails and brackets. The wheels can be stowed in a holder attached to the right rear seat, the saddles can go into a compartment in the load floor. If you need to make a quick adjustment or a fix, you can do so since the bikes are aligned across the load bay.
