Why you can expect lots more crossovers from BMW
Wed, Jan 6 2016BMW is becoming the ultimate crossover sales machine. More than a third of the German brand's US sales in 2015 were crossovers, and the automaker expects 40 percent of 2016 sales to be the all-purpose runabouts. What's more, BMW of North America CEO Ludwig Willisch said that when the X7 gets here the percentage will take another leap. Even though BMW was one of the automakers to raise warning flags about how China's depressed car market would impact earnings, the Willisch said the Munich brand couldn't get enough of the X1, X3, and X5 in the first three quarters of 2015 in any of its key markets. Remedy is on the way with an expansion of the Spartanburg, SC plant. When it's finished later this year the US factory will be able to build 29 percent more product than before, annual capacity rising from 350,000 to 450,000. Spartanburg currently builds the X3, X4, and X5. There's every reason to believe that BMW will post another record US sales year in 2015, adding a lot of fat to its profit statement in what should be a record year overall. TrueCar predicts 17.5 million light vehicle sales in the US last year, a 6.1-percent increase over 2014. BMW could also take the luxury crown after posting a monster month of December sales, we'll know when the numbers are reported this week. The huge numbers have come with the help of incentives. BMW spent slightly more than competitors Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, but only fractionally up on 2014 incentive spending.
Xcar checks if BMW's i8 offers moves as electrifying as its looks
Sat, 02 Aug 2014If you were to plot the general opinion about hybrids since their introduction among auto enthusiasts, the resulting graph would likely be shaped somewhat like a "V." In the beginning interest was high, simply due the novelty of these new powertrains, then the line would gradually fall as the models got the stereotype of being boring commuters. Today, though, things might be back on the upswing. Vehicles like the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and BMW i8 are showing that a hybrid doesn't have to be synonymous for dull. In its latest video, Xcar Films aims to find out if BMW's electrified sports coupe actually earns the brand's old moniker as the ultimate driving machine.
While the focus here is on what the i8 is like behind the wheel, one of the main highlights for the viewer is the interesting ways that Xcar shoots the BMW. It's not necessarily a beautiful vehicle, but seeing it in motion reveals all sorts of little intricacies that still photos don't pick up. For example, our eye catches the flying buttresses and little crevices scooped out of the corners when we get a look at the rear. It's just a fun car to look at.
With its 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine and electric motor, the i8 positions itself as the future of automotive performance. But its intriguing looks and cutting-edge use of carbon fiber would be wasted if the coupe didn't drive well. We won't spoil the final verdict, though, you'll have to watch the video above.
BMW Recalls 1.6 Million 3 Series Cars For Air Bag Problem
Wed, Jul 16 2014DETROIT (AP) - BMW is expanding a recall of its most popular models to fix an air bag problem that is hitting much of the global auto industry. The German automaker says it will recall 1.6 million 3 Series cars from model years 2000 to 2006 across the world, including 574,000 in the U.S. The company said Wednesday that it's a precaution because other automakers using similar systems have reported problems. Air bag inflators in systems made by Takata Corp. can rupture. If that happens, the bags might not work properly, and shards could fly out and cause injury or death. The problem is responsible for millions of recalled vehicles during the past few years made by manufacturers such as Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. Here's a look at the long history associated with this problem, that affects millions of cars. BMW said it has no reports of problems in its vehicles. Dealers will replace the passenger-side front air bags. The new recall excludes 42,000 BMWs recalled in May 2013 for the same problem. The company says it is recalling all vehicles equipped with potentially faulty air bag systems regardless of where they were sold. In June, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating air bags made by Takata, a Tokyo-based supplier of seat belts, air bags, steering wheels and other auto parts. The agency said it received six reports of air bags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico. Three people were injured in those cases. It had estimated 1.1 million vehicles in the U.S. could be affected, but the total is likely to climb. The government says it wanted to act quickly in warm states while it continues to investigate the issue. "Based on the limited data available at this time, NHTSA supports efforts by automakers to address the immediate risk in areas that have consistently hot, humid conditions over extended periods of time," the agency said in a statement. Takata said in a statement Tuesday that it is supporting the NHTSA investigation and its customers with technical analysis and replacement parts. "Our objective is to do all that is possible to ensure the safety and well-being of the public," the statement said.
