This is truly a beautiful machine and it gets looks where ever it goes.  It's a very serious car thouhg and so more car than I want. I think a normal 5-series is for me.

Black Sapphire Metallic paint and Black leather interior heated and ventilated in the front, with leather covering most interior surfaces and an alacantara headliner that further differentiates this car from the typical 5-series. This car has the Olive Ash Wood interior which I think makes it far warmer and upscale compared with the standard Aluminum in M5s.

These cars have the racing derived 7-speed automatic manual and those have SMG pumps that regularly fail after 50-60k miles.   This one had that fail too since it's has just over 60k miles. This is great news for you because you don't have to pay the $5k+ to replace it. I just did that at a BMW dealer and the SMG unit is now warranteed for 2 more years as a result. You can't get it covered by aftermarket or BMW extended warranties, so this is the best protection you can get. Take a look on the forums and you'll see what I mean. You just can't get a warrantee for it without replacing it (Trust me, I tried!).

For options, this car has:
-Rear window and rear passenger sun shades. The rear window shade is powered and the 4 rear side ones are manual.
-Olive Ash Wood interior replaces the base aluminum trim
-Technology package including a Hard Drive to store music and a new iDrive and navigation interface versus the 2006-2009 cars which use the old clunky one.
-Climate package
-Heads up display which is configurable
-Ventilated front seats with three settings per seat
-Automatic high beam headlights
-Adaptive Headlights that swivel in turns.  This makes a huge difference on night roads.
-Comfort Access Keyless Entry.  Don't buy a BMW without this.
-Soft close doors.  These are a bit gimmicky.
-Multifunction seats with an incredible amount of adjustments possible
-Integrated Universal Remote
-Mirror with Automatic Dip - handy for seeing the curb
-Active Seat Bolsters -Driver and Passenger. This is neat but can be turned off too if you find it disturbing
-Headlight washer system
-Navigation System Professional with Live Traffic information and re-routing. The re-routing is really a nice feature.
-Voice Control
-Preparation for Satellite radio. I let it expire.
-BMW Individual Audio System with USB/Audio inputs and HDD storage
-Park Distance Control (PDC) ultrasonic sensors in the front and back of the car to help with parking. A little radar picture and some beeping lets you know how close you are and where.
-SMG 7 speed transmission that can be driven in manual or automatic modes.

The car is in great condition. There are a few nicks and scratches as you'd expect on a used car. I've tried to capture in the photos and am happy to send others. Here's what I consider the minor wear and tear: There is a small scuff on the passenger side door (see picture); there is a filled-in and sealed stone chip on the passenger side of the windshield  -I don't notice it when I'm driving; the black chrome trim around the doors shows a weird modeling that is apparent in some lights when looking closely (see picture) but strangely, can be wiped down and then almost disappears.  It is most noticeable if you use RainX; there are 2 small ~1" chips of the wheel surface treatment in 2 of the wheels; Fan in driver's side seat ventilation is louder than right side;  I suggest new tires for next spring once you put it back on the road after the winter.  There are two small scratches in the left driver's side bolster leather (I think it's from my ID card clip).  The wiper arms have some chips in them too, but is really not noticeable since it's black metal underneath.  You have to look really close to see the nicks;  A couple of small stone chips in the hood have been spot touch-up well to prevent any problems.

It's had all it's scheduled service and is currently driven daily. It's a great car if you're looking for an M5. The car certainly has some nice features and rare features above the basic M5. The Alacantra roof liner is quite striking and gives a real air of disctinction to the car. The wheels are classy and mean business at the same time, immediately differentiating this car from other 5-series. The whole stance of the car is menacing without being over the top about it. This car gets many compliments and looks of awe or jealousy. The critical elements of Seat and Steering Wheel are fantastic - The best I've ever felt and most adjustable. Even the cruise control was a pleasant surprise with some nice little features that let you jump up or down by 5mph.

When you do accelerate quickly, especially after pressing the intimidatingly labeled "M-Mode", the car becomes alive. The seats grab you, the HUD shows a tachometer and speed on the windshield in bright colors and the engine seems to double in size. The sound on this mode is quite glorious too, but it's quite a fast car, so you don't really have many opportunities to do this beyond the odd on-ramp.

It is a tough decision to sell it, but the car just doesn't make sense for a driver like me.  It's up to date on all maintenance, and I would be happy to bring it by Erhard BMW for an inspection at your costs.  Erhard knows the car (did the SMG fix) and it's where I've gone for years with all my BMWs for service so they know me too.

Playboy reveals its 2013 Cars of the Year

Thu, 20 Dec 2012

Vaunted men's magazine Playboy knows that its readers are nearly as interested in cars as they are in the female anatomy... sorry, we thought we could write that with a straight face. Anyway, the buff-book does occasionally fill some of its spreads with sexy metal, to accent all the rest of the sexiness.
To wit, the magazine has unveiled its feature on the 2013 Cars of the Year. Without giving us much in the way of criteria for the awards, nor a clear framing of the categories ("Responsible Ride" is a particularly challenging concept, especially when you consider that the Mazdaspeed3 was the winner), Playboy has nevertheless highlighted what we assume to be it's favorite 12 or 13 (depending on how you count) cars from the 2013 model year.
Headlining the class is the Porsche 911, which Playboy writers single out for having "remarkable electronic voodoo." BMW M5 is named "Slickest Sports Sedan" though the Cadillac ATS then follows on because "we couldn't resist giving the new Caddy a shout-out." The rest of the picks are pretty conventional (save, perhaps, the Honda Fit EV as "Ace Electric"), even if the categories and methodology are fairly wonky. Cruise through or gallery for a taste or check out the full list, here. The site is safe for work, and you can legitimately (this time) say that you were reading it for the articles.

Bertone goes bust

Mon, Mar 17 2014

The famous Italian coachbuilder and designer Bertone may be on its deathbed. The company that penned the beautiful shape of the Lamborghini Miura has been facing financial hardships for months, and Autocar is reporting that the Turin, Italy firm has just declared bankruptcy. The last we heard from Bertone, it was showing the Jet 2+2 station wagon based on an Aston Martin Rapide at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Turin-based carrozzeria became famous for its wild designs like the BMW Spicup concept, Lancia Stratos and the initial shape of the Lamborghini Countach. In recent years, it had been limited to creating mostly one-off vehicles. The company has slowly been shrinking recently. It sold its small factory to Fiat a few years go and let go of 165 employees and 10 interns in December. Bertone has been shopping itself in hopes of finding a new owner. According to PistonHeads, even with the money problems, the business generated 20-million euros ($27.9 million) in revenue in 2013 and has been working on projects in China. A Turkish firm was rumored to be interested in buying it for just $2.7 million, and GT Spirit claims that there are also seven Italian companies potentially interested in purchasing it. Bertone has a long and proud automotive history, and it wouldn't be surprising if it were bought just for the value of the brand – perhaps we haven't seen the last of its stylized B logo.
