EPA finally approves sales of 2017 BMW diesels
Wed, Aug 3 2016The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the sale of 2017 BMW diesel vehicles in the US, reports Automotive News. According to Chris Grundler, head of the EPA's Office of Air Quality and Transportation, the vehicles were delayed due to rigorous testing. Following the Volkswagen diesel scandal, the EPA stated that it would review all diesels headed to the US. Last month, the EPA delayed sales of BMW's 2017-model-year diesels due to testing logistics, claimed BMW. Now that the vehicles have been approved, production of the models should begin shortly. While BMW's diesels have been cleared, the report indicates that Mercedes-Benz's 2017 diesel models are still undergoing further testing. "Discussions continue," Grundler stated, but he declined to point to any specifics on why the EPA has not approved those diesel models. Amid the numerous lawsuits against VW, Mercedes has also been involved in suits that claim its diesels use defeat devices, although no major proof has surfaced. Earlier this year, Mercedes confirmed that the US Justice Department, EPA, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), were investigating its diesel models. The 2016 diesel models from VW haven't been approved for sale yet, and the automaker has not asked for permission from the EPA to sell 2017 diesel models, claims Grundler. At this point in the year, it's not likely VW will sell any 2016 diesels. Last year, BMW's diesels accounted for about four percent of the company's total US sales, so the delay is not likely to have a drastic affect on its bottom line. BMW i creates high-design solar charging carport
Fri, 09 May 2014With the first deliveries of the i3 under way, and the recent i8 press launch, the marketing push in the US for the BMW electric sub-brand has begun. These i vehicles are supposed to have a completely different feel from the rest of the brand's lineup. To complement their earth-friendly ethos, the Bavarian company commissioned BMW Group DesignworksUSA in California to create a solar carport concept that could keep the models sustainably topped up on power. It premiered alongside the i8 in Los Angeles at the electric sports coupe's media launch.
At first glance, the BMW i Solar Carport Concept looks like a pergola from a winery or a well-groomed garden, but like the i vehicles, the deeper you look, the more high-tech features there are. The sides feature carbon elements in a similar way that the i3 and i8 have a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body. Bamboo forms the uprights because its quick-growing nature makes it rather sustainable, and the solar panels are strung along the top to harness energy.
Obviously the sun can't provide all of the energy that the electric cars need, and a BMW Wallbox Pro charger is also connected to the power grid as a supplement. It includes a readout telling users the amount of solar energy versus municipal electricity it's using.
Cars with the worst resale value after 5 years
Tue, Nov 7 2023While the old saying that cars lose a massive chunk of their value as soon as they’re driven off the dealerÂ’s lot might not be entirely true these days, most new vehicles steadily lose value as they age and are used. iSeeCars recently released its latest study on depreciation, finding the models that lose value the fastest, and the list is packed with high-end nameplates. The vehicles that lost value the fastest over five years include: Maserati Quattroporte: 64.5% depreciation BMW 7 Series: 61.8% Maserati Ghibli: 61.3% BMW 5 Series Hybrid: 58.8% Cadillac Escalade ESV: 58.5% BMW X5: 58.2% Infiniti QX80: 58.1% Maserati Levante: 57.8% Jaguar XF: 57.6% Audi A7: 57.2% While sports cars, hybrids, and trucks dominated the list of slowest-depreciating vehicles, luxury brands accounted for all of the top ten fastest-depreciating models. iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer also pointed out EVsÂ’ lack of representation on the slow-depreciating vehicles list, saying that thereÂ’s a disconnect between what automakers are building and what people actually want. The average five-year depreciation for all vehicles in the iSeeCars study was 38.8 percent. ThatÂ’s an almost 11% improvement over 2019Â’s figures, but some vehicle types perform worse than others. EVs depreciated 49.1 percent over five years, while SUVs dropped 41.2%. Trucks only fell 34.8% and hybrids 37.4%. Brauer noted that all vehicles depreciate slower than they did five years ago. Even so, EVs are not the best choice if youÂ’re looking for a vehicle that wonÂ’t feel like a ripoff when itÂ’s time to trade in. On the flip side, used EVs can present a stellar value, saving thousands over their new counterparts. Charging times and availability remain concerns for buyers in large parts of the country, but a heavily depreciated EV could be the used car value youÂ’ve been looking for. The same wisdom applies to used luxury vehicles, as the list above indicates. While new-car buyers shopping for luxury cars are set to see big depreciation during their ownership, that means the used car market is flooded with inexpensive used luxury cars. High repair costs and costly maintenance schedules are real issues that used luxury models face, however. Green Audi BMW Cadillac Infiniti Jaguar Maserati Car Buying Used Car Buying
