Upcoming new Alpina B7 teased

Wed, Jan 20 2016

BMW does not make an M7. It never has, despite rumors, trademark filings, and the actual desires of the people that would build such a car. That means that while we're stuck waiting for BMW to see how foolish not building an M is, the most potent 7 Series you can get wears an Alpina badge on the nose. Meet the newest version of that car... sort of. BMW and Alpina haven't taken the wraps off the next B7 just yet, opting instead for an opera-accompanied teaser of the new car undergoing track testing. The car is lightly camouflaged – there's enough to make it clear it's a 7 Series, but not so undisguised as to reveal too much of the Alpina bodywork. There's a more aggressive bumper, a meaty rear spoiler, and sharper side sills, along with what are probably Alpina-specific wheels, but more precise details are hard to discern. What isn't difficult to pick out, though, is ear-tingling exhaust note. The last two Alpina B7s have built on the standard 7 Series' engine, and this new model likely won't be any different. That should mean a breathed upon 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 which goes well above the unfettled car's 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The extra power, along with the donor car's new lightweight carbon-fiber passenger cell, should make for tantalizing performance capabilities. The current 750i xDrive takes 4.3 seconds to make the sprint, and the B7 model that this new machine will replace hits 62 in 4.6. We'd expect the upcoming B7 will do better. The teaser from BMW and Alpina doesn't indicate when the new model will debut, but we'll eat our proverbial hat if it doesn't happen in Geneva. Related Video:

Upgraded BMW 230i and M240i get more power, new badges

Tue, May 17 2016

A few months ago, we got our hands on a report that claimed that BMW would ditch the 28i and 35i monikers for both the 2 and 3 Series. BMW already dropped the 335i designation in favor of the 340i badge, but the 328i is still hanging around. In the 2017 2 Series, the old badges are out. Meet the new 2017 230i and M240i, in both coupe and convertible flavors. If you're already confused about all the badge changes, here's the important part: the 2.0-liter inline-four and the 3.0-liter inline-six, both turbocharged, get more power than the engines in their 2016 counterparts. The 230i will get 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and be smoother than before. Those are increases of eight hp and three lb-ft of torque over the 2016 model. The M240i replaces the M235i. There's more power here, too: 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, available from 1,520 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Those are increases of 15 hp and 39 lb-ft of torque, by the way. All-wheel-drive models are eight-speed automatic-only; a six-speed manual is a no-cost option on the 230i, and available on the M240i. These models will launch later this summer, and pricing will be available closer to that time. We reached out to a BMW spokesperson for a better understanding of what hardware and software changes are responsible for the increased output, but this information isn't yet available. Car and Driver 10Best list cracked by Tesla Model S, BMW 3 Series left off

Fri, Nov 21 2014

Car and Driver is keeping new blood pumping into its annual 10Best cars list with three new entries making it on for 2015 and a perennial favorite falling off. Among the biggest shocks this year is that the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series are no longer named, despite years of some portion of that lineup earning a mention. In another surprise, the Tesla Model S (specifically in S 60 trim to fit under the $80,000 cost cap) makes it to the 2015 roster and is the only electrically motivated member of the group. Despite the loss of the 3 Series, BMW isn't entirely shut out this year, because the M235i gets its name on the list. Car and Driver argues that the little coupe feels like a welcome throwback to the E46 chassis M3 of the early 2000s. In addition to the Model S, the final newbie to the annual group is the 2015 Ford Mustang GT. The inclusion of these new members knocks the Audi A6/A7 family and Ford Fiesta ST out from the 2014 rundown. The other seven models carry over from last year, including the Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Honda Accord, Mazda3, Mazda6, Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Volkswagen Golf/GTI. The 2015 10Best cars list certainly seems to have something for everyone from the hot hatch fan to the family man and even the green car driver, thanks to the addition of the Tesla. Head over to Car and Driver to read its detailed explanations for each vehicle's inclusion, but if you've got a difference of opinion or just really like the list, let us know in Comments.
