Estoril Blue BMW M3 for sale. Keeping a car in D.C. has become too inconvenient, so here it goes.

Car has been well-maintained since purchase. Regular oil changes only using synthetic oil, all repairs done properly, and all wear-and-tear parts replaced with OEM or parts of higher quality (e.g. all-aluminum radiator fittings to replace the worn plastic ones). Every known common mechanical failure for E36 M3's has been addressed and replaced with a part of better quality (e.g. replacing plastic parts with metal ones.

It has been used as a daily driver since it was bought in 1999, and has been very reliable since. It has been on long road trips, and never left me stranded. Car was never smoked in, and the sedans are rare. They are also lighter than the coupes.

Lots of performance work--to get this work on a stock M3 would cost well over $4,000.

Upgrades include:

Zionsville high capacity aluminum radiator

E46 M3 front rotors (cast with cooling holes)

Forged Porsche/Brembo 911 calipers (last generation 911)

Euro-style front headlights (glass covers instead of plastic)

Composite Hood (professionally painted factory Estorial Blue)

Rear diff brace

H&R Progressive Rate springs (small lower, ~.5”)

Billstein shocks

Front & Rear aluminum tower braces

Custom Volk wheels (including full-size spare)

Schrick cams

CAI

COMFORTI ECU

Re-upholstered front seats (done with leather)

New Bridgestone rear tires

M50 intake mainifold

New radio (AUX input, CD changer, AM/FM)

Front under-panel

Ball-bearing short-throw shifter

There are some problems with the car: damage to front bumper (from wheel dipping into pothole; visible in the pictures); starter motor works better when the car is cold; A/C compressor is disconnected (A/C still works; compressor clutch just needs replacement).

Buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping.

$1000 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction's end and full payment within 72 hours.

BMW to finally put i8 Spyder into production

Sun, Dec 6 2015

The BMW i8 Spyder might finally see production. The vehicle debuted in concept form over three years ago, but despite the coupe version having long since arrived in showrooms, the convertible has been nowhere to be seen. According to the latest reports from Germany, however, that's about to change. According to Automotive News, the company's new chief executive Harald Krueger told German publication Handelsblatt that we'll soon see the BMW i8 Spyder in production form. The prospect of open-air motoring under prodigious amounts of electric power sounds enticing, however we'll have to wait and see just what sort of roof mechanism the production model incorporates. The concept had removable roof panels, however the manufacturer tends to favor automatic roof setups – hardtops in the Z4 and 4 Series, or soft tops in the 2 Series and 6 Series. Around the same time, BMW could introduce a power upgrade in the form of a larger internal combustion engine and a higher-capacity battery to go with it. A 2.0-liter turbo four is tipped to slot in where the current three-pot sits, bringing output up to a solid 450 hp – and with a longer range to boot. If those upgrades to arrive – with or independent of the open-roof version – expect them to be implemented on the coupe as well as the roadster.

ROEV lets you use multiple charging networks with one account

Thu, Nov 19 2015

It may be a textbook case of a first-world problem, but any EV driver who doesn't want to carry two or three plug-in vehicle charging station cards when one would do is about to get a little smile on their face. This morning at the LA Auto Show, the new ROEV Association was announced that will let EV drivers carry just the one card. While you would think the all-caps ROEV stands for something, none of the pre-announcement materials nor the website explain it that way. Instead, it seems to just be a play on rove, which makes a lot of sense. There are three charging networks involved in ROEV: Blink, ChargePoint, and EVgo. Conveniently, these are the three largest in the US and have a combined 17,500 public chargers across the country. If you've got an account with one of these three networks, once ROEV goes into effect (expected in the spring of 2016), you'll be able to use that card at any participating charger without signing up for another account. Your personal details are kept private, ROEV says, and the companies coordinate behind the scenes to make it work. Pricing details were not disclosed. Besides the three main charging networks, two automakers are also founding members of ROEV: BMW and Nissan. ROEV says that Audi and Honda have also have already joined the Association and the organization wants to pull in all EV stakeholders to make electric vehicle charging easy. Fans of EV technology will note that ROEV has nothing to do with promoting either the CHAdeMO or the SAE Combo (CCS) fast charging standard. The Leaf is a CHAdeMO car while the i3 uses CCS, for example. The charging networks, of course, provide both kinds of plugs and don't promote one over the other. Tesla and its Supercharger network are not involved in ROEV, but Tesla drivers can, of course, participate in ROEV.

China probing German automakers over spare parts

Sat, 26 Jul 2014

The Chinese market has proven to be a boon to German luxury automakers. However, the way that the companies have allegedly been controlling their supply of spare parts has begun to draw the ire of the nation's government. According to insiders speaking to Bloomberg, officials from the country's economic planning organization have opened a probe into Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and some Japanese carmakers over claimed price inflation and limiting supply.
Specifically, the investigation centers around two aspects of how the companies do business, according to Bloomberg. Investigators want to know whether the original equipment component makers are able to sell spare parts only to automaker-authorized dealers or if they are also available to independent shops. There is also the issue of whether the price markup on replacement pieces is too high. The tight controls could be partially explained by China's reputation for producing counterfeit parts.
Evidently, the investigators haven't checked parts prices at car dealers elsewhere in the world. At least in the US, paying more at the dealer for factory components just goes along with owning a vehicle. If evidence of price fixing is found, the companies could face fines the equivalent of millions of dollars, according to Bloomberg.
