About me:
I am a lifelong automobile enthusiast, mature adult and BMW CCA & Porsche CCA member. While I appreciate all types
of 2 and 4-wheel vehicles, I've always leaned towards BMWs and Porsches for their driving experience and
reliability. I currently own a 2007 BMW M6 Convertible (manual transmission), a 1983 Porsche 928S (manual
transmission, supercharged) and this 1998 BMW M3 Convertible - which I'll tell you more about below. I love to
drive (prefer it over flying in most cases) and my cars are not garage queens - they get driven. My M6 is
approaching 110K mileage (I've owned since 20K - purchased from original owner) and my 928 has 125K on the clock.
Given how much I drive - and how many of my trips are multi-day, 250+ mile excursions, I am very demanding about
maintenance. I keep all of my cars in perfect mechanical condition and subscribe to the philosophy that one's
equipment should be kept in perfect working order at all times - so as to always be ready for use and never let one
down. I am also a stickler for cosmetic maintenance - my very first job was at a car wash and it taught me how to
care for cars before I could even drive them. All of my cars are regularly detailed - especially after long trips.
I take them to the best detail shops and they are waxed every time they are washed. This particular M3 has been
clay bar waxed 3 times in the 10 months I have owned it - in addition to numerous other regular washes and waxes. I
personally clean and condition the interiors and leather after each wash. The interiors (especially leather) are
the one thing I don't trust to others - I've seen too many interiors ruined by using cheap cleaners from the auto
parts store. I treat the interior vinyl/plastic with 303 Marine Aerospace Protectant (originally developed for
aerospace and aviation applications and marketed to the boating industry for UV protection on watercraft which are
constantly in the sun). Leather is cleaned with saddle soap and organic conditioners. I've attached photos of my M6
and 928 in addition the the M3 pics to give you an idea of the condition of my cars. Yes - I am meticulous with
them - but they give me great joy so I don't mind showing them respect and attention.
About this car:
I fell in love with the E36 M3 while in high school. I had a 1974 BMW 2002 at the time (all I could afford back
then). The E36 M3 had just come out - and one of the wealthier kids at school had just been given one by his father
- a 1995 Dakar Yellow coupe. It was the envy of myself and all my friends and I've wanted to own one ever since.
Later in life I was living in Mountain View CA - right around the corner from the original Dinan shop. I'd
regularly see Dinan tuned M3s driving down my street on the way to or from service. The cars looked and sounded so
good - I decided if and when I purchased my own E36 I would bring it to Dinan for the works.
Last spring my M6 was in the shop for some routine maintenance and performance upgrades. I'd had a good 2014 and
decided it was finally time to start looking for an E36 which I could drive for the summer while the M6 work was
completed.

BMW 3 Series wagon configurator up, priced from $41,450

Mon, 25 Mar 2013

If you're still smarting from the shock of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, we have good news for you. BMW has just fired up the configurator for the 2014 3 Series wagon. Prices start at $41,450, excluding an $895 destination and handling fee. The price tag will buy you a 328i xDrive Sports Wagon with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine boasting 241 horsepower paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. The automaker's xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is also standard, as is a fuel-saving auto start/stop function and 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-season run flat rubber.
Buyers can step up to Sport Line trim for $2,600, and doing so graces the 3 Wagon with 18-inch wheels, high-gloss black accents outdoors as well as a sport leather steering wheel, high-gloss or aluminum interior trim and a black signature key fob. Luxury Line trim will set you back $2,300 abd features chrome trim accents outdoors and wood trim inside along with other goodies. Buyers can also opt for Modern Line trim at $2,300, complete with a turbine-design 18-inch alloy wheel, matte chrome trim bits outdoors and a range of interior trim options.
Our favorite of the bunch? That would be M Sport trim. While the tweaks are largely aesthetic, we dig the notion of 8-way power adjustable sport seats indoors and exclusive M Estoril Blue paint outside. Expect to pay $3,950 for the pleasure. Head over to the BMW site to build your own.

American motorcycle brands most satisfying, Japanese most reliable, says Consumer Reports

Fri, Apr 10 2015

Consumer Reports started tracking motorcycle reliability last year through its regular reader survey, just like the magazine's well-known auto guide. For the 2015 edition, CR now has data on over 12,300 bikes, compared to 4,680 in 2014, and the extra info means it can include more brands, like Suzuki, Triumph and Can-Am, to the list. However, the final results remain largely the same. As with last year, Japanese bikes are the best choice for buyers who prioritize reliability. Yamaha comes out on top yet again and is followed by Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda. Victory and Harley-Davidson hold the middle of the list, and the European cycles from Triumph, Ducati and BMW sit at the bottom. The major outlier in this regional distinction is the Can-Am Spyder from Canada's Bombardier Recreational Products that comes in dead last in the dependability survey. Still, even the most dependable model is occasionally going to break, and the average repair bill across all brands is $342, according to CR's readers. Kawasakis are the cheapest to keep on the road at a median of $269 for fixes, versus BMW as the most expensive at $455. Through all of the companies, electrical gremlins are the most common issue, causing 24 percent of problems, but faults with the cooling system, pistons or transmission are the smallest concerns at 4 percent each. While Japanese cycles might be the easiest to keep on the road, they aren't the most beloved by riders. In CR's gauge of satisfaction, the Americans reign supreme. Victory owners love their bikes the most with 80 percent reporting that they would buy another. Harley riders are known for having a close bond to the company's models, and the brand comes in second with 72 percent. Finally, Honda rounds out the top three at 70 percent. Are you the next BMW X5?

Tue, 15 Jan 2013

Who knew that diecast model makers could be such a good source of leaks? Less than a month after a diecast model 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA in China, someone overseas at Diecast Empire or Jadi Modelcraft could get a bath in boiling oil for leaking uncamouflaged images of the next-generation BMW X5.
Naturally, that assumes that this image from a brochure from a Jadi brochure is indeed the F15 BMW X5 - it was posted to Diecast Empire's Facebook page. In its favor, the lines all add up if we compare it to the most revealing spy shots we have of the coming crossover - the headlight corners, the metal trim separating the kidney grille from the opening just above the license plate, the cut of the swage line, and the fact that the model picture reveals all of the most important character pieces that BMW has kept covered.
There's something written on the door of the model image that isn't in the spy shots, but that could be an xDrive badge. We will see the genuine article soon enough and we'll know for sure. For now, we might have already seen its facsimile in miniature.
