The 2001 - 2002 BMW M roadster reads like a BMW greatest hits list. The S54 motor from the E46 M3. Semi-trailing arm rear suspension from the E30. Sport steering wheel from the E39 M5. Gearbox and brakes from the E36 M3. Add in a 3.15 limited slip differential and the updated DSC from the E46. Deep dark shadowline refinished M roadster wheels, a lowered stance, and an M-specific body to complete the look. With 315 hp, and over 300 lbs less than the 2001 M3, this car likes to run. Check the period reviews to see what I mean. This car is by far the most fun vehicle I have ever owned, It has never let me down in a single occasion, going to work, cross country drives, you name it. It is (almost) as content to idle down the road as it is to hustle down a back road. Everything, the controls, are tight and responsive. It makes any drive fun, even a long one. Twice, after an 800 mile drive I felt great and stepped out with a smile on my face, turning back to look at the car as it ticked cool. The silver with the red interior is a very special combination. I love the car and have really enjoyed it. Its takes premium, obviously, but has always returned better than expected fuel economy. The reason I am selling is that I find myself driving more and I hate to put so many miles on such a special car. I have all the maintenance receipts from my work and the previous owner's work. The car has been recently gone over by Harrison Motorsports in GA. They specialize in BMWs, lookup the shop. I have always kept the car clean, washed, and waxed. Included in the sale is the soft-top cover for when the top is down and a custom car cover. The car has: ***Reinforced subframe Fresh front brakes Recent oil change Tires probably have ~80% left Upgraded speakers New rear window New alternator Cosmetic refresh Areas of attention: There are a few scratches and chips throughout the car. I have tried to touch these up on the hood as pictured The car will need rear brakes in 10,000 miles or so These cars are known for cracking rear subframes. This car had this issue and I repaired it at a cost over $4,000...with Randy Forbes' kit. The repair was professionally done by Harrison Motorsports. The car is much stiffer after the repair and this cracking will never be an issue again. The potential issue is S54 motor rod bearings. These usually fail at low mileage. The motor in this car is outside the motor recall dates. I have always taken great car of the car to warm the car up properly (oil and coolant up to temp) every time I take it out. Basically, this car is ready for you to drive it like you stole it! That's honestly it! I am a Mechanical Engineer by training and own five bicycles currently and I have had a few motorbikes in the past. I have been a perfectionist about everything mechanical I own and this car is no exceptions. The car (his name is Sterling by the way) has been my baby and I get teased over the amount I obsess over it I don't have to sell it by any means and it will upset me to do so, but I guess it is time for me to be a bit more practical... BMW planning X4 M Performance diesel? [w/poll]
Wed, 04 Dec 2013With the arrival of the new X4 in March, BMW will expand its crossover portfolio by one more model. But while some enthusiasts may have been disappointed by the news that the Bavarian automaker isn't likely to authorize an M version of the compact slantback crossover, this latest development could help bridge the gap.
Although the line used to be quite clear between standard BMWs and M models, Munich has been blurring it with the M Performance treatment. Those have included models like the M135i hatchback and M235i coupe, the diesel-powered M550d sedan and wagon and X5 and X6 M50d crossovers. Now word has it that BMW could follow a similar formula with the X4, creating a sub-M performance model.
What's more is that the X4 M Performance model could go diesel, following a similar formula that Audi undertook with its first performance crossover, the SQ5 TDI. The major difference here is that when Audi brought the SQ5 to these shores, it ditched the diesel for a gasoline engine. Could BMW do the same?
BMW Films are on the way back [w/videos]
Mon, 17 Feb 2014The BMW Films series caused a stir in 2001 and 2002 by combining top-quality cinematography, Hollywood names and driving excitement to sell its sporty wares in a whole new way. By arriving five years before YouTube, they ranked as some of the earliest viral videos on the internet. By now, these sorts of films are almost commonplace, but back when BMW hit upon the idea, the idea of brand-integrated short films on the internet was still a novelty. Now, for the first time in over a decade, the German automaker is planning on bringing back BMW Films for a new season.
Trudy Hardy, BMW North America Vice President of Marketing, announced the series' return at the 2014 Automotive News World Congress in Detroit, according to Ad Age. However, neither the German brand nor Anonymous Content, the original production company, have been willing to comment further on when the new videos are coming.
The original series of eight films starred Clive Owen as the Driver (back then, Owen was largely unknown to American audiences), a mercenary who would take a variety of jobs and always drive a BMW. David Fincher executive produced the first season and directors included top names like John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee and Guy Ritchie. All of the second season movies had Owen driving a Z4, but in our estimation, the quality had fallen off a bit compared to the outstanding first season.
