1985 635csi 5-Speed Manual Black/Tan e24 170k miles

This fun to drive car was my daily driver until I replaced it with a Fiat 500 for fuel economy reasons.  It's been very reliable and I used it to commute about 50 miles a day.  If I had the space to store it, I would keep this car.  It is a blast to drive.  I've owned a couple of other 6ers and the 5-speed really makes the car a lot more fun to drive than the automatic that's in most of them (other than the Ms).

The body is in good shape, you can see there's a scrape/gouge on the rear quarter panel on the driver's side and the usual scrapes on the air dam.

My research when I bought the car told me that it had been owned by two Beverly Hills surgeons.  It has been a Los Angeles car for all of its life as far as I can tell.  It was purchased in the South Bay (I have the window sticker somewhere).  It has been well maintained, and as you can see below, I took care of a number of the wear items.  It's a great car that needs to be loved and driven.

Significant work done in the last two years:
(1) New fan clutch.
(2) New starter.
(3) Set of Kumho Ecsta 4x tires.
(4) New heater core.
(5) Water pump / thermostat.
(6) New cylinder head / gasket.
(7) New timing chain guides.
(8) New pitman arms (rear).
(9) New heater core.

Like any 28-year-old car (or person!) this car has some flaws.  Issues that I know about:
(1) Heater blower motor only blows on HIGH, it is quite noisy and probably needs to be replaced.
(2) A/C was removed when I replaced the heater core; will include the A/C unit with the car.
(3) Paint on trunk and roof is oxidizing.
(4) Seats have the typical seatbelt wear pattern/hole in the leather and the passenger sear is very worn (I swapped with the driver's seat)
(5) Not all of the seat adjustments work.

Some other e24 and old-BMW specific facts:
(1) The windows and sunroof all work.
(2) Dash is in good shape.
(3) Does not have the rear A/C or rear speaker pods.
(4) Odometer works fine (no broken gears).

Included with the car:
(1) Replacement 635csi badge.
(2) Bentley shop manual for same-era 5 series.
(3) A/C blower unit

The car is located in Santa Monica, CA.  I am pretty busy, so I'm only interested in showing it to people who are really interested.  I can take/post/send pictures of more specific aspects of the car if you have questions.

1972 BMW 1602e EV concept looks glorious

Wed, Mar 25 2015

Pretty sweet. That's a first impression of one cherry-looking experimental electric vehicle from BMW from way back in the day. Or at least from someone who for a time drove a '74 2002. A gas-powered one, that is. BMW built two experimental vehicles in 1972 based off of the old 1600 (which evolved into the 2002) model and even showed them off during the Munich Olympic Games of that year. BMW strung together a dozen typical car batteries and linked them to an electric motor made by Bosch. The result was a battery pack that weighed about 770 pounds (A quick modern-day comparison: a Nissan Leaf battery pack weighs about 480 pounds). Bimmer recently posted a two-and-a-half minute video about the project. The clip doesn't say how far those cars could go on a single charge, but did use to the vehicles to "escort" long-distance running competitions at the Munich Games, since there was no exhaust to choke those athletes out. The timing is fortuitous, of course, as the German automaker looks to continue to gain more goodwill from the green-car set through its new "i" sub-brand of plug-in vehicles, including the i3 electric vehicle and the i8 plug-in hybrid. 2016 Technology of the Year Finalist: 2016 BMW 7 Series

Mon, Jan 4 2016

BMW remade the legendary 7 Series around technology for 2016. Yes, the sixth generation of BMW's iconic flagship remains a luxury leader, but its sophisticated new features expand the 7's traditional strengths to a new generation that relies on smartphones. The 7 Series' extensive tech is most evident inside, where the driver and passengers have new interactions with the car. A feature called gesture control allows the driver to turn up the volume, accept or decline phone calls, or turn off the home screen using hand movements (see the video below). The sedan also has a digital instrument cluster, LCD touchscreen keyfob, wireless charging feature for phones, and a pinch-to-zoom function that makes iDrive simpler to use. Life is especially good in the backseat, where a seven-inch Touch Command Tablet allows the passenger to control comfort, lighting, and infotainment tasks. There's also WiFi, a gorgeous panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof, and 10-inch screens mounted into the seatbacks. Creature comforts and connectivity aside, BMW literally redid the 7 Series to the core. The new body structure, called Carbon Core, helps the sedan cut weight by up to 190 pounds compared with its predecessor while improving stiffness and rigidity. Meanwhile, the big sedan now offers four-wheel steering, improved aerodynamics, and it will get a plug-in hybrid version next year. It's still a 7 Series, and that means it has all of the luxury can you imagine. The car will massage you, perfume the air, and ionize the cabin. Naturally, it has a potent twin-turbo V8 pushing out 445 horsepower. This is what you've come to expect from BMW. But with the new 7 Series, the venerable automaker moves toward the modern tech-savvy consumer, and that's why Bavaria's most decadent sedan is a finalist for our Technology of the Year award.
