Today they're growing in popularity as collector's items, and nicely maintained, unmodified examples like this are sure to be on the short list of European car fans everywhere. Shockingly, this long, sleek coupe still wears its factory paint. The black finish is still extremely nice and for a collector, that counts as a big bonus. It's also a testament to the quality of the original finish, as it still shines up beautifully and looks fantastic under any conditions. That original paint also means that this car has never been hit or rusty, and even in the '80s, BMW's build quality was impressive. Sleek styling made the 6-Series the envy of the industry, and there weren't many competitors on the far side of the pond, and over here it was competing with totally different machines like the Cadillac Eldorado and Lincoln Mark VI-hardly an apples-to-apples comparison, wouldn't you say? The bumpers are in excellent shape and haven't been cooked into a dusty gray mess by the sun and all the chrome is still good, needing nothing more than an occasional buff to remain shiny. The tan leather interior boasts some of the era's most comfortable bucket seats, because BMW's reputation as a driver's car was firmly established in 1983. Again, it's all original and while there's minor wear on the seating surfaces themselves, there are no splits or cracks in the leather and the materials underneath are still supportive enough to be all-day comfortable. The black dashboard is rather dramatic, with a pod ahead of the driver hosting a full array of highly legible white-on-black instruments, and an upper tier with the A/C vents. The center stack has the controls for the A/C system (which has a fresh compressor and R134a refrigerant), the original AM/FM/cassette stereo, plus a fully-functional trip computer! The dash pad shows a few minor cracks, which is typical of these cars, but on the plus side the back seat looks almost completely unused. The 6 also offered a spacious trunk that carries its original mats and a complete factory tool kit. BMW's famous line of inline-six engines were the foundation of their lineup for years and years for good reason. The 3.2-liter six was given Bosch fuel injection and electronic controls in 1980, making for a substantial boost in power and reliability, and for turbine-like smoothness, it's hard to beat. Extensive recent service work includes a full tune-up with cap, rotor, plugs, and freshly cleaned fuel injectors, so it runs superbly. It's backed by the highly-desirable 5-speed manual transmission that makes the car a joy to drive, and the supple yet athletic independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes guarantee that it's always entertaining to drive. The front control arms were recently replaced and the rear end was re-sealed and serviced, and the brake calipers have been rebuilt and new cross-drilled rotors help shed additional heat. It currently wears 15-inch BBS wheels from a later 5-Series, but the original 14-inch alloys are included with the sale. A very impressive car that's gaining traction as a collectable. 2014 BMW 535d xDrive
Thu, 20 Feb 2014I absolutely love to travel, but man, do I hate flying. Not the act of flying itself, but air travel in general - slogging through the airport, dealing with security, fighting with delays, only to finally be crammed like cattle into a too-small airplane seat where you're offered $8 sandwiches that are half-frozen. (Okay, it's not always that bad, but still.)
So when I was tasked with attending the launch for the 2015 Subaru WRX STI in Carmel, CA, I had a choice to make. I could fly into San Francisco and find my own way down to Carmel, or I could grab a turbo-prop out of SFO and fly directly into Monterey. And since you're reading about all of this in a car review, it's pretty obvious which option I chose.
The current BMW 5 Series isn't a new car, despite receiving a couple of updates for the 2014 model year. But what is new is the 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline six-cylinder engine found underhood, borrowed from the larger X5 xDrive35d and also seen in the upcoming 740Ld xDrive. It's a honey of an engine, and here in the 5 Series, it makes for a truly first-class experience.
BMW plans i5 as a useful EV for families
Wed, Mar 9 2016BMW has the often-rumored i5 under development as the next member of its i sub-brand. While the work isn't done yet, look for the future model to be an electric vehicle to appeal to families. To fit the mainstream purpose, BMW's engineers plan to give the new product a long driving range and useful cargo capacity, i product boss Henrik Wenders told Car and Driver. In the brief interview, Wenders shoots down many previous rumors about the i5. For example, he says the model is an EV – not hydrogen fueled or a plug-in hybrid like previous reports claim. However, BMW plans to offer an optional range extender like it does for the i3. "The range-extender plays an important part in the next years when range remains a limiting factor and a source of anxiety," said Wenders. Without saying so directly, the exec also seems to suggest the division wouldn't use the platform from the long-wheelbase 5 Series for the i5, which some reports allege. Instead, Wenders sees the sub-brand as pushing BMW's technological prowess with tech like the current model's extensive use of carbon fiber. According to Wenders, "One of i's roles is as an enabling brand, to help industrialize new materials and processes. We have already opened the door with the i3, and we will take it from there." BMW's EV boss told Autoblog in early 2014 that the company already had the new vehicle under development, but the automaker later denied that claim. With the current lineup, the i3 excels in urban environments, and the i8 is a sports coupe. The next natural step is to offer more room and greater range with the i5. Given the upcoming EV boom from models like the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, and next-gen Nissan Leaf, we're very curious to see BMW's effort to stay competitive in the segment. Related Video:

Host Jonathon Buckley hits the track at Auto Club Speedway of California in a 2015 BMW M4 to put down a baseline lap time before his virtual training session in the Motion Pro II. After learning the lines of the track in a simulated setting, Jonathon returns to the track to put his skills to the test.
