For sale is my 1998 BMW 540i with 6-speed manual transmission and sport package.  This is an outstanding vehicle, up to date on maintenance, in very nice shape and is very fast (rated at 0-60 in ~5.5 seconds, quarter mile in ~14 seconds).  I have owned it since January 2012 and it has been an excellent vehicle, but it is a 3rd car and is simply not needed (or so says my wife!).  I just took it on a 400 mile trip and it performed flawlessly, getting close to 24mpg.

The follow maintenance includes two previous owners and myself

Everything on this car works, and it currently needs nothing - I would drive it across country in a second.  There are some various nicks and scratches on the paint, as it's a 15 year old car, but the paint shines up nicely, the grey leather is in good shape with no tears, and there is no body rust, save for a small spot on the driver door corner where the paint has flaked off a bit and there is a small ding on the driver rear quarter panel.  The car currently does not leak any fluids, although there is a very small seepage from the valve cover gaskets.  I just had my BMW mechanic look at it again, and he thinks there is no reason to replace it now - it hasn't gotten worse since the first time he looked at it over 6,000 miles ago, but at some point, it may need to be replaced. There is nothing else that needs attention - but feel free to bring your mechanic and thoroughly inspect it.

The OEM muffler has been replaced with an after market unit that (I think) sounds great.  A little more rumbly but it won't set off any car alarms.  Original muffler will be included with the car.  Also of note - there was an airbag light on when I bought the car - the issue is that the passenger seat sensor does not work correctly, so the passenger airbag will be deployed even if no one is sitting there - I installed a bypass plug to remove the light, but I can remove it upon request.  There are currently no check engine or other dash warning lights on.  The OEM shift linkage has been upgraded to a short-shift kit - very nice, short, notchy throws.  All gears engage correctly and there is no grinding or slippage.

Front tires have about 80% tread, rear tires have about 90% tread.  The rears were recently replaced due running over a piece of debris and rendering the tire irreparable.  Upon request, you can also have the 1 remaining good tire not mounted on the rim, which I saved due to it having about 80% tread left.  17" BBS wheels have some curb rash but still look pretty good.  When I recently replaced the front brake rotors, I upgraded them to Brembos and upgraded the pads to ceramic - the car stops very well.  Battery is less than 1 year old, clutch has less than 7,000 miles on it.  Air filter has been upgrade to a K & N.

6-disc changer and cassette player work correctly, heat and air conditioning work great, power seats, power windows, sunroof, cruise control and power tilt/telescope steering wheel all work correctly. The headlights are little cloudy and could use a good scrubbing on the inside.  Toolkit is present, as is full-size spare (although the rim is a little bent, see photo).  OEM front pop-out cup holders have been removed and replaced with fixed cup holders that are a little better than stock, I think.  Clear title in hand.

This car is available for viewing in Champaign, IL 61821.  If flying in, I will be happy to pick buyer up at Willard Airport (CMI) or at the Amtrak station in Champaign, both less than ten miles from my house.

Drifting can be dangerous for spectators, too

Fri, 02 May 2014

Okay kids, here's your lesson for the day. When you go to a motorsports event (that isn't a rally), there are these things called walls. They're big and hard. There might be stacks of tires in front of them. There are also these things called barriers, catch fences and run-off areas. They exist to protect you, the spectator, when something inevitably goes wrong on the track.
If you don't have these things, you probably shouldn't be watching whatever four-wheeled mayhem is taking place. This gentleman learned that the hard way, after getting a bit too close while some hoon drifts his BMW 3 Series.
Scroll down for the video, and be warned, while there isn't any blood that we can see, some viewers might find the sight of a human getting punted by a BMW disturbing.

2015 BMW X6 M First Drive [w/video]

Wed, Feb 4 2015

Please forgive my bluntness, and allow me to cut to the heart of the X6-dissenter argument right at the top. Yes, BMW will sell you a 2015 BMW X5 M that is the motive twin (I assume) of the X6 M you're here to read about, that is also cheaper, roomier, and more conventional in appearance. For many of you – especially the old guard that hears the descriptor "Sports Activity Coupe" and proceeds to unlock the gun cabinet – that's all you need to hear. Because, although the fickle community that consumes and comments on internet car culture seems to be fine with typical-looking SUVs and wagons packing performance-enhancing goodies, the idea of slanting the back of one turns them right off. And yet, BMW continues to sell the things; more than 250,000 units have be delivered in the X6 series' history. As if that weren't proof of concept enough, blood-rival Mercedes-Benz has unleashed the GLE, a coupe-like crossover of its own, complete with AMG pedigree. All of this brought me to Austin, TX, home of Hill Country, The Circuit of the Americas and the 2015 X6 M launch. On both road and track I found a car that was more powerful and blithely capable than ever, while also being exactly as weird to drive as it is a concept to comprehend. Given that the X5 M exists, and offers styling that is more like normal for the SUV genre, both the lovers and the haters of the X6 M are likely to be focused on the way it looks. Here, the 2015 model isn't very much changed from the original, meaning you aren't liable to change sides on the styling debate for this refresh. The '15 model has a slightly fewer black accents on the exterior, along with revised front and rear fasciae and vented (and chromed) front fender gills. The car is almost two inches longer than the existing model, but is near enough the same size in every other direction that you'd have to study the specification sheet to know different. Inside the X6 M that I tested was a beautiful, fully optioned cabin that boasted gripping sport seats and BMW's wide, easy-to-read infotainment screen. The leather-wrapped everything and carbon-fiber trim were both well executed, and my hands rejoiced at the feeling of the thick-rimmed, serious-looking steering wheel. Veterans of the current M5 or M6 will see a lot that looks familiar here, but to my eyes that's high praise. The most impactful changes aren't visual but visceral.

BMW spotted testing new 5 Series Gran Turismo

Tue, Nov 3 2015

As previously reported, BMW is going ahead with a second-generation 5 Series Gran Turismo, no matter how silly the first generation of the sedan-cum-hatchback-cum-wagon may be. These are our first spy photos of that new vehicle, which is still on track for a late 2016 debut. Perhaps the best thing we can say about the next 5GT is that it won't be quite so hunchbacked. The seven images provided by our spy photographer show a car with a profile that's far more svelte than the bulbous entry on offer today. The roofline, in particular, is more aggressively raked at the rear and there's a proper, distinguished rear deck, as well. Part of what makes today's 5 Series GT look so bizarre is the combination of an almost fastback tail with a very tall decklid height. While the updated model still features that high rear – you can actually see where the beltline kicks up at the rear quarter window – the fastback styling has been softened so that it doesn't look quite so bizarre. The new Gran Turismo should also be a much better steer than the 5GT currently on offer. Our spies report that this next-gen model will be significantly lighter, which is something we can always get behind. Engine options will consist of gas, diesel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid, as is the trend, although specifics aren't quite available yet. Spitballing, though, it's almost a guarantee that the next 5GT will share the 5 Series sedan's engine lineup. Expect a number of carryover engines there – 2.0-liter turbo four, 3.0-liter turbo six, 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, and 3.0-liter diesel, probably – along with a plug-in hybrid option, although nothing's been confirmed so far. With an official debut slated for late next year, either Paris or Los Angeles seem like a logical debut location.
