BMW shows off 245-hp, hydrogen-powered 5 Series GT
Fri, Jul 3 2015With BMW's Innovation Days 2015 underway, the German luxury brand is showing off its latest piece of hydrogen-fuel-cell technology. Based in a 5 Series Gran Turismo, the system Í– co-developed with Toyota – promises to deliver on the promise of zero-emissions motoring, without the lengthy recharge times associated with plug-in electric vehicles. At the heart of BMW's latest FCV prototype is a new electric motor derived from the i sub-brand. It produces the equivalent of 245 horsepower, making it roughly comparable in output to the brand's latest 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder gas engines. It draws its fuel from a hydrogen fuel tank that sits between the axles. The BMW-patented storage system can hold enough compressed hydrogen to take the hunchbacked 5 Series 300 miles before refueling. BMW and Toyota first inked their FCV partnership back in 2013, with the goal of having "an initial group of approved components ready by 2020," and sales beginning at some point in the next decade. While Toyota has been touting its successes with hydrogen in the form of the new Mirai, this 5 Series marks the first time since the agreement was signed that the German company rolled out one of its hydrogen-powered cars to the public. As part of its research and predevelopment work in the area of drive technology, the BMW Group has focused on the use of hydrogen as an energy source for more than 30 years now. In 2006 the first luxury sedan for everyday use to be powered by a hydrogen combustion engine was unveiled – the BMW Hydrogen 7. And more than 15 years ago the BMW Group also began to direct its spotlight onto hydrogen fuel cell drive systems. A constant stream of significant advances – in terms of energy efficiency, performance capability and everyday practicality – have likewise been made with this technology, which converts hydrogen into power for an electric drive system, rather than burning it inside the engine. The results of the research and development activities in the field of hydrogen fuel cell drive systems will be presented in driving demonstrations for the first time during the BMW Group Innovation Days 2015.
Upgraded BMW 230i and M240i get more power, new badges
Tue, May 17 2016A few months ago, we got our hands on a report that claimed that BMW would ditch the 28i and 35i monikers for both the 2 and 3 Series. BMW already dropped the 335i designation in favor of the 340i badge, but the 328i is still hanging around. In the 2017 2 Series, the old badges are out. Meet the new 2017 230i and M240i, in both coupe and convertible flavors. If you're already confused about all the badge changes, here's the important part: the 2.0-liter inline-four and the 3.0-liter inline-six, both turbocharged, get more power than the engines in their 2016 counterparts. The 230i will get 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and be smoother than before. Those are increases of eight hp and three lb-ft of torque over the 2016 model. The M240i replaces the M235i. There's more power here, too: 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, available from 1,520 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Those are increases of 15 hp and 39 lb-ft of torque, by the way. All-wheel-drive models are eight-speed automatic-only; a six-speed manual is a no-cost option on the 230i, and available on the M240i. These models will launch later this summer, and pricing will be available closer to that time. We reached out to a BMW spokesperson for a better understanding of what hardware and software changes are responsible for the increased output, but this information isn't yet available. BMW to offer carbon fiber wheels in a year or two
Sun, 23 Feb 2014The Citroën SM sat on the first set of production glass fiber and resin wheels in 1972 when parent company Michelin developed the exotic hoops in order to take the SM rallying. It wasn't until 2008 that we got the first all-carbon-fiber wheel for passenger cars in the form of a prototype model from Weds Sports in Japan that remained a prototype. Australian company Carbon Revolution followed that a year later with its CR-9 all-CF wheel, first introduced on the Shelby Ultimate Aero and now available for independent purchase for about $15,000 per set. BMW could be the first OEM to offer entire wheels in carbon fiber reinforced plastic in two years.
The wheels - either all-CFRP or using a CFRP rim and alloy spokes - were shown off during BMW's Innovation Days in Munich and are products of the development work done on its i-branded cars. The full-CFRP wheel is 35-percent lighter than a forged alloy wheel, the hybrid alloy and CFRP wheel is 25-percent lighter, making for a decent drop in unsprung rotating weight. As demonstrators during a tech day the wheels aren't yet in the pipeline for production and EU approval, but an article in Auto Express claims that they could be on the market as soon as two years from now.
Other possible parts include a full carbon fiber steering wheel and propeller shaft, the latter of which is coming as a single-piece component on the new M3 and M4. BMW is also talking up its use of secondary carbon fiber - waste material from i3 and i8 production - that can be used for items like IP support structures, seat frames and spare wheels in place of traditional metals like aluminum and magnesium.
