Manfred Von Richthofen also widely known as the Red Baron, started life as a 1972 BMW 2002 but along the way it became a more sophisticated and precise machine. Manfred is powered by a 2.3 liter S-14 (E30 M3) motor mated with a close ratio 5 speed gear box, Korman finned differential, headers, and a custom exhaust. The motor is reliable and quiet, the gearbox linkage has just been rebuilt and is very smooth and direct. The car is a delight to drive on track, it is very communicative and predictable, it is a amazing in the corners. This is a real momentum car and the suspension, Eibach main and tender coil over suspension with dual adjustable front and rear shocks. 22mm front 19mm rear sway bars, strut brace, and Ireland engineering big brake kit, keep it planted and flat in every type of corner. The cockpit is fitted with an aluminum roll cage, new Sabelt seats, G force cam lock harnesses, a simple gauge cluster to keep track of things while doing battle on the track. The Alpina Widebody fiberglass fender flares and Verona red paint with black stripes offer a unique and aeronautical look to the typically boxy 2002. This car has a personality and liveliness not found in many cars, it is great fun!

Manfred is housed at NOLA Motorsports park in New Orleans, LA and is available for inspection with an appointment and demonstration to serious parties. The car is ready for the track immediately, and is a great car for beginners and experienced drivers. It is not hugely powerful so it is hard to get in trouble with throttle, but is it comfortable to drive at the limit and predictable and rewarding once the limitations are learned. It will out corner much more sophisticated modern machines. The weight is approx. 2100 lbs, power is around 190 HP- I do not have dyno or build sheet for the car. I purchased from an instructor at Barber Motorsports who has enjoyed and driven the car there for many years. It was built and customized in Germany then maintained and enjoyed in the US for several years. It is well maintained and ready for duty. It could be used on the street, not in Louisiana, but in some places. So if that is you intent, please look into in your state/country, but the car is NOT titled or registered for street use.

The car has recently had a full service and some cosmetic enhancements, the overall condition is excellent. The only flaws are the fuel gauge is not working, the paint has a couple of blemishes and nicks, and the tires have about one more day in them. I believe the Hoosier is a better tire for the car, I was experimenting with different tire producers, there are several brands available depending on the track, conditions, the wheel size is 15”x 9” ATS Aluminum -

Manfred is sold on Bill of Sale ONLY. The car has been exclusively a track car for me, so I have not tried to title or register the vehicle, every State is different so please do your own research if you want to make the car legal for street use.  I have previous owner’s registration/ new owner can pursue a title in their state/the car is really set up for the track so smooth roads would advised.

The car is sold “AS IS” and with “NO WARRANTY” A $2500 deposit is due with in 48 hours of the auction being won- do not bid unless you want to buy- please have funds available - trades will be considered-

I will accept a wire, check, cashiers check, and will consider interesting trades, I have several track cars and need to thin the herd and pick up a nice low miles street cruiser in the process( Audi A8/S8 BMW 5/6/7 MERC S/CL) so I will hear all offers but PLEASE no tire kickers/scammers/kids with no $.

Actual milage unknown- please email with any questions- reserve will not be given-

2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible [w/video]

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

Here it is, the fifth generation of BMW's 3 Series Convertible - only this one begins with a "4," having been rechristened as a droptop version of the new 4 Series Coupe. With thirty years of work on this same recipe and having gotten it so right for much of that time, the Munich compact premium convertible has been a WYSIWYG affair for decades: once you saw its sedan paradigm, you knew what it was going to look like in roofless two-door form, and what you saw is exactly what you got.
It is ridiculous to think that BMW would choose this new model and its new nomenclature to muck things up. The new car has, though, gotten larger and roomier, and even though it's now part of the racier coupe division within the company's compact line, it has gotten more, shall we say, mature. Driving even further away from the days when handsomely tipped bartenders could work their way into one, The Ultimate Tanning Machine had shed even more elan, going instead for elegance and an attitude befitting its $49,675 starting price (including $925 for destination).
It strikes a few odd notes, but what it does best, it still does better than anything else out there in its price range.

BMW i8 with 500+ horsepower in the cards?

Wed, 22 Oct 2014

While BMW makes plenty of machinery to keep enthusiasts interested, its most enticing models are often based on more ordinary ones. That's what made the arrival of the i8 so captivating, emerging as the first stand-alone BMW sports coupe since the M1. But if its dual purpose - trying its best to both embrace the earth and traverse it rapidly - somehow left you disappointed, the next development could prove to fix that.
According to Automobile, BMW is working on a more potent i8S model. The hardcore version of the hybrid sports car would offer more power and a stiffened chassis to make it that much more aggressive. The Bavarian automaker is reportedly still evaluating two potential powertrain options: The first would pair a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder good for 320 horsepower to an electric motor with another 204 hp. The second would use a 3.0-liter straight six with 480 hp and an electric motor with 109 hp. Both would be mated to a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and an integrated starter motor packing an extra 27 hp.
Either way, we'd be looking at a combined output well in excess of 500 horsepower - far more than the existing i8's 228-hp turbo three and 129-hp electric motor - dropping the 0-62 time down from 4.1 seconds to an estimated 3.5. Couple that to a more advanced carbon chassis, wider tires and other goodies, and the i8 would be transformed into a far more capable performance machine than it already is.

Mini has become the Rover that BMW always wanted

Tue, Oct 27 2015

BMW has been working for 20 years to build a successful line of British cars, and on the evidence of the second-generation Mini Clubman, it may have finally done it. That means it's time for all of us to get used to the fact that Minis aren't going to be that small anymore. Case in point is this new Mini Clubman, introduced last month and conspicuous by its size. Many of us who've pointed to BMW's stewardship of Mini as an example of retro done right bemoaned the Countryman subcompact SUV – a concept actually ahead of its time. The Coupe and Roadster, perhaps rightfully, deserved (and received) an eye roll. But now there's a so-called four-door hardtop that went on sale this year and this forthcoming, six-door Clubman that approaches the compact hatchback class in size. These vehicles actually look like practical moves at keeping buyers from defecting to larger cars made by someone else, rather than vain attempts at maximizing investment in a set of parts. And in an interesting twist, Mini is turning into one of its ancestors – minus the feeling of inevitable doom. Many of us were led to believe somewhere since Mini's relaunch about 15 years ago that the brand would be a stepping stone into the greater BMW fold. But in reality, it's done exactly the opposite, creating a parallel brand for those not willing to embrace the BMW image, but leaning heavily on British nostalgia. That was sort of the reasoning used when BMW pulled the Rover Group of England away from a fruitful partnership with Honda in 1994 and absorbed it all. In the consolidate-or-die '90s, it made sense. BMW had a small, but successful, line of sedans. Rover had no success outside of Western Europe (its last US attempt at selling cars, the Sterling, ended three years earlier). Yet its Land Rover line of SUVs was just right for the time and the 35-year-old Mini still had image-conscious clout. With every passing day, the brilliance of BMW's move to abandon Rover in 2000 seems brighter. Even ditching Land Rover made sense in the long run (and probably saved Jaguar in the process). With every passing day, the brilliance of BMW's move to abandon Rover in 2000 seems brighter. During a chat with Mini USA VP David Duncan this summer, it became clear the Mini of the past is probably gone. A small, city-sized Mini is not necessarily off the table, but larger and more profitable models are coming first.
