Very fun to drive, fast, in great condition, recently rebuilt sunroof works perfectly, strong engine, very solid car.  Good daily driver, original (some mods), partly restored, body is straight and overall very good condition.  Clock keeps time, interior lights all work, has original spare tire and rim in great condition, original painted emblems, original radio, uncut door panels, new headliner, carpet, etc.  More details:

History:  I am the third owner, bought it from an architect who lives and kept the car in Malibu, CA for many years. He bought it from original owner who moved to CA from east coast in the early 80's.  From the German BMW archive, they confirmed the following: "manufactured on November 17th, 1972 and delivered on November 20th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085."

Engine/mechanical: was rebuilt by second owner about 22,000 miles ago.  It runs very strong with no smoke, at any speed, and has never let me down.  The two BMW 2002 specialty shops that worked on it said it is one of the fastest Tii's they've ever driven, has great acceleration.  Turn key, it starts cold and properly sets to the idle as it warms up.  Drives off perfectly.  I had the fuel injection rebuilt, a
dded electronic ignition, is in good order, runs good.  It handles great and steering and suspension all work well.   Brakes in good condition, stops evenly and solid, about 70% left.  Transmission works great first through third gear, however there is a slight grind going into fourth gear.  I've learned to put in fourth without any grind by easing it in, however if you just slam it from third to fourth you will experience a slight grind but nothing that will prohibit driving or enjoying the car.  It will not require any immediate replacement however I waited on this because I wanted to put a 5 speed in it.  A used 4 speed transmission put in by a 2002 specialty shop is about $500.

Body:  solid and repainted about 15 years ago.  The sunroof was rebuilt a year ago and works perfectly.  I recently had the front nose section of car replaced, as the original was a mess from someone trying to fix dents with bondo and ugly grills.  Mechanic said to replace the nose for better results so a BMW 2002 specialty shop in L.A removed the nose tip off a good clean used 73 2002, at the factory seams, and installed as original, looks factory. The nose, hood, and front fenders were repainted to complete and looks very good.  Only body rust was "fixed" under the spare tire by previous owner when he had it painted, was not done well and just filled.  Because its not noticeable and in spare, I did not fix it.  It poses no issues at all except it is not that difficult to have the spare tire tub replaced, estimate was about $500.  Last, the bumpers are original and starting to show their age.  Front bumper still looks presentable, but rear not so much (see pics), chrome is flaking.  I got a quote to re-chrome them for $1000 and will have it done for new owner if they wish, just add the $$ to final price, told it takes a week.

Interior:  New carpet, new headliner, solid door panels with no holes, original radio (does not work), heat/cold work but fan does not, all gauges work except odometer .. speedometer works fine.  The seats are good, no tears, however you may notice in pics that the blue is a bit lighter than the door panels.  Odometer stopped working about 200 miles ago and not sure what happened but likely to be the cable.  My mechanic said fan will need repacement, and this is the only spot he found rust, as the original fan is rusted frozen.  The spare and fan are common rust spots for coastal 02's as the moisture collects.  The dashboard has a few cracks and I put the 'powered by BMW' badge on it because someone prior installed a digital clock. ?? I removed clock and covered with the badge.

Tires/rims:  New Kumho tires, very nice handling.  The rims were sanded and repainted, clear coated, and look great.  The spare tire and rim are original from the factory, untouched and still look excellent.  These rims all straight except the left front has a minor curb rash spot.  The spare rim appears to have never been used.

Price:  NADA shows the 73tii going price as $20.6k (low) and $34.3k (high).  Because it is a good driver, with rare working sunroof, will start with a minimum and no reserve.  Good luck!

Auction:  Please contact me with any questions by ebay email or phone (949) 362-0068 (does not accept text).  Please inspect or have car inspected before purchasing as this car is sold as is.  A non refundable $500 deposit is required within 24 hours of auction close.  I can keep it in my garage up to two weeks, will be happy to help with shipping if needed.  Thank you.

Story on the BMW 2002tii vs 2002, taken from official BMW 2002 archive ....

The biggest change for the 2002 series was the introduction of the 2002tii. The “fuelie” was much more expensive and much faster. It still is the standard of performance for the smaller BMWs. The tii has also survived in remarkable numbers since it is the true enthusiast’s car. The 2002tii had larger diameter wheel cylinders, larger and thicker front rotors and brake pads as well as a tastefully mounted clock on the dash. It also boasted virtually no emission controls, heavy duty front spindles, boxed rear A arms, heavier clutch and a 3.45:1 differential yielding a higher top end.

In 1973 the plastic intake manifold trumpets were changed to more reliable aluminum ones which didn’t have any O-rings to blow out. Some small modifications were made to the injection pump linkage. In 1974 a new distributor was installed along with some other minor emission controls. Other than that the car remained parallel to the 2002. The 1974 2002tii was slower but this was primarily due to a difference in weight.  The 1973 tii was the fastest and last of the round tail lights, as well as chrome bumpers.

BMW CS reinterpretation proves retro can be sexy [w/video]

Fri, 28 Mar 2014

Designer David Obendorfer doesn't work for BMW, but perhaps the German automaker should give him a call. His CS Vintage Concept shows a singular ability to understand the brand's classic style and reinterpret it for today. He isn't some amateur, either. Obendorfer has an industrial design degree and has been penning the interiors and exteriors of yachts from the Officina Italiana Design for five years, which counts luxury shipbuilders like Riva and Sanlorenzo among its clients. His website shows a real passion and knack for modernizing '60s and '70s European cars, too.
Obendorfer prefers to reimagine classic automotive styles. "Retro cars are not copies of their predecessors or renovated specimens, rather they are carefully studied reconsiderations, strongly rooted in contemporary style," he tells Autoblog. For the CS Vintage Concept, he worked to update the looks of the seminal BMW 2000CS and its E9 chassis while placing them on a modern platform. Obendorfer's inspiration comes from his belief that the later CS models' design is partially responsible for defining BMW styling, with its shark-nose front and four round headlights.
The CS Vintage Concept's shape starts with a jutting hood and a quartet of LED headlights, but the whole design really comes together in profile. The Hofmeister Kink at the rear pillar with the BMW Roundel is a nice nod to the originals, yet the proportions still find the perfect fusion of classic and modern. The interior is minimalist, with a vast expanse of wood for the dashboard at first glance, but the latter opens to expose the car's infotainment system.

As a bonus, there's no reserve. The Concours d'Elegance is not a complete stranger to electric vehicles, hosting an EV display at the Meadow Brook Concours in suburban Detroit last year. BMW has announced updates to the 6 Series lineup today, including a special "Frozen" edition of the convertible, and a 640i Gran Coupe in all-wheel-drive trim.
The 2014 BMW 6 Series Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition (catchy name, right?) will be available from select BMW dealers this May, and will offer buyers the signature paint, Frozen Black mirror caps, a black grille and uniquely designed, 20-inch M Performance wheels. Just 100 examples of the FBWE 6er will be produced, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars in the mix, for starting prices of $106,995 and $110,095, respectively (both prices include $895 in destination and handling charges).
