Super straight, completely rust-free 1976 BMW 2002. This car has been a California car all of its life. Completely stock and all original, except an old refinish many years ago. It is a bone stock, right down to its original SOLEX carburetor.

This 2002 has 133K original, careful miles. It has never had any modifications, repairs or changes to deviate it from its stock original condition. The original 2.0L four-cylinder motor runs very well, with no noises, knocks or leaks. It starts, idles and runs fine. NO overheating issues or low oil temperature. It runs and drives well. I have been the second owner of this BMW for nearly twenty years, and purchased it from the original owner in Hillsborough, CA in the early 1990s.

I was hoping to pass it on to one of my grandchildren, but unfortunately they do not really have much of an appreciation for an classic BMW. I have not driven it much in the last few years ( I have kept up current registration and insurance on it thru 2014), and I would prefer to find it a new, loving owner that will appreciate it as much as I have.

The mechanical condition is remarkable for a vehicle of this vintage. It has a peppy 2.0L engine, mated ot its original four-speed manual transmission. The car drives and shifts well, without hesitation, and with no clutch slippage, chatter nor grinding of gears. NO rearend, axle or wheel bearing noises either.

The body of this 2002 is very solid, without the usual rusty strut tower or trunk area rust issues common to these old cars. The body is 98% straight and solid. It had been refinished once before in a slightly different shade of silver-blue ( done by the previous owner, not myself).

There is absolutely NO structural rust on this car. The floorboards, quarters, doors, engine compartment, trunk, rocker panels and undercarriage are rust free. There is some very minor finish loss on the lower edge of the rear windscreen as pictured.

Overall, it is a solid, virtually rust-free California BMW 2002. It would make a great candidate for a mild restoration, or drive it as it is. Its classy, timeless lines make the 2002s a very good investment and lots of fun.

I have a CLEAR California title ( in my name), currently registered through 2014. It is turn-key and drive.

Toyota close to licensing deal with BMW for fuel cell technology

Wed, 23 Jan 2013

For over a year now, we've been hearing about a potential partnership between Toyota and BMW on everything from sports cars to lithium-ion batteries, but one of the first cooperative projects between these two automakers could bring Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell technology to a BMW vehicle. Reuters is reporting that an announcement is likely to be made as soon as later this week regarding a BMW fuel cell vehicle that could be in production by 2020 with a prototype running around by 2015.
The last we heard of Toyota's fuel cell technology, it was in the FCV-R Concept that we saw at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, but there is no word how far along in development this system is. If it does come to fruition, such a vehicle for BMW would build on the automaker's commitment to hydrogen that started with the Hydrogen 7, which unlike a fuel cell vehicle, simply ran on hydrogen fuel rather than converting it to electricity for use in motors. We're definitely interested where this Toyota/BMW tie up could be headed.

Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla Model X assembly video, autonomous Apple test car spotted?

Tue, Apr 26 2016

A video from Tesla shows factory robots assembling a Model X. The teaser video is titled, Team of robots gives Model X its backbone, as the machines are working on the car's structural support. It gives a rare glimpse into the underpinnings of the Model X, and it also reminds people that the cars are being built despite previous delays. See the video above, and read more at Teslarati. A Chinese electric vehicle company has hired multiple executives from BMW's i sub-brand. Sources close to the matter tell Automotive News Europe that Future Mobility, an EV company backed by Tencent Holdings and Foxconn Technology Group, has hired Dirk Abendroth as VP of software and connectivity, Benoit Jacob as VP of design, and Henrik Wenders as VP of marketing. The former BMW employees will join former BMW i8 project manager Carsten Breitfeld, who is Future Mobility's CEO. Abendroth and Wenders confirmed their new positions at the Chinese company, while Benoit didn't immediately respond to ANE. A BMW spokesman declined to comment. Read more at Automotive News Europe. A blogger at TechRadar claims to have spotted a possible Apple autonomous test vehicle. Author Michelle Fitzsimmons says the white, unmarked Ford Transit was kitted out with various apparatuses, including Lidar sensors and cameras on the roof. While she originally thought it could be a van from Apple's Maps service, the Lidar and a couple other oddities lead her to speculate that it is actually using self-driving technology. If not testing autonomous features itself, the van could also be gathering data for a future driverless vehicle. Read more at TechRadar, or from Apple Car Fans.

BMW says SUVs killed the sports car market

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

In many ways, we're living in a golden age of automotive performance. After all, it's possible to show up at a Dodge dealer, hand over about $60,000 and storm away with a 707-horsepower Challenger Hellcat. Or for those who prefer a touch more luxury, the BMW M4, Mercedes-AMG C63 and latest Cadillac ATS-V offer between 425 and 503 horsepower, depending on your pick, with a bit more poshness. However, none of these powerful vehicles fit the classic definition of a two-place, droptop sports car, and according BMW head of sales Ian Robertson, that's because the segment is very much in the doldrums.
According to Robertson, two factors seriously wounded the classic sports car market. First, the global economic crisis of a few years ago put a serious hurt on sales, according to Bloomberg. Further worsening the situation, the boom in popularity of luxury SUVs and crossovers in the past few years hasn't allowed for much recovery. Even car-hungry China hasn't helped much because of the smog in many cities and preference among some of the very rich there to be chauffeured.
Combined, Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK sales peaked around 114,000 units a year in 2007, but they are only expected to reach 72,000 annually by the end of the decade. Robertson is pretty pessimistic about the market's comeback too. "Post-2008, it just collapsed. I'm not so sure it'll ever fully recover," he said to Bloomberg.
