1976 Classic BMW 2002, last year for the car….This iconic car has been in our family since 1977. Virtually every receipt since the car’s purchase is still on hand, along with the original owner’s manual.  Although a mechanical restoration was started in 2002, it has not been completed. The chassis did have rust in the typical spots, including the left rear wheel well. Utilizing NOS factory parts, the entire wheel well was professional replaced. The floors and the remainder of the chassis are nearly rust free.

Drivetrain:

When new, this car was equipped with an automatic transmission. It has been converted to a 5-speed transmission using a newly remanufactured Getrag from the Metric Mechanic. The pedal box and all related components necessary for the conversion were purchased new from BMW and the 2002 Haus. Absolutely no expense was spared in this conversion, including two brand new, complete drive axles from BMW. The 14” original BBS BMW wheels have never seen the road; new and perfect, including the hub covers.

Suspension:

All corners are now fitted with new Bilstein Sport struts coupled with new Eibach lowering springs. The rear control arms were replaced with new ‘tii boxed’ units. All components have been either epoxy painted or powder coated. All sway bars are tubular and fully adjustable and, together with the performance suspension bushings, were purchased from Dave Ireland Racing. The front sub frame was removed, media blasted and repainted.  The steering box and idler arm were also rebuilt at that time. The front suspension features adjustable camber using custom strut tower mounts. Camber and toe-in are also adjustable in the rear suspension. The battery has been relocated to the truck along with the obligatory strut tower brace.

Engine:

Zero miles on a very comprehensive performance rebuild which includes:

·         Ported and polish head with new valves and guides.

·         New dual 40DCOM carbs with ported and polished manifold. New custom stainless steel fuel lines were made exclusively for this car by the Stainless Steel Brake Corp in Clarence, NY. A new high volume Carter pump has been mounted in the engine bay in the old battery location.

·         Ignition system that has been upgraded, but retains an original equipment ‘tii’ distributor which was purchased new but has never been used. Rather than use points, it sports a Pertronix magnetic pick-up driving a new MSD 6A-L.

·         New, old stock Shrick 292 camshaft with new rockers and performance retainers.

·         New ARP head studs and hardware.

·         New, ceramic coated exhaust manifold completed with new, never installed complete Ansa exhaust.

·         Pistons are OE 10.5:1 “piano top” Mahle.

·         All lower end components are new, including the oil pump and chain. Naturally, a windage tray has been fitted.  All components have been precision balanced.

·         Engine mounts are of the polyurethane variety.

Brakes:

·         Front: All new OEM components including wheel bearings. The calipers have been professionally rebuilt. Brake hoses have been replaced with custom stainless steel lines.

·         Rear: Custom rear disc brake conversion from Dave Ireland Racing.

Chassis and Interior:

Although the engine, drivetrain and suspension are installed in the chassis, all the final assembly/testing work remains to be completed. The engine has not been started since the rebuild was completed several years ago. The interior is in pieces as work was started but not completed with the installation of a new pedal box and shifter housing to accommodate the 5-speed conversion. A VDO gauge kit was purchased, but has not yet been installed (although the required senders/sensors have). The dashboard is in perfect condition, without any cracks or blemishes. The steering wheel has been replaced with a new, period-correct MOMO wheel.

Overview:

This is a project car that will require considerable work and patience to complete. Although parts-wise, she is nearly complete, a fuel tank and driver’s seat will be needed. The car is offered for sale ‘as-is, where is,’ with no warranty of any sort. Fire away with questions, as I’ve been involved with this car for nearly 40 years.

BMW 1 Series getting a small nose job

Tue, 06 Aug 2013

As BMW prepares to launch its new 2 Series lineup, it appears that the current 1 Series is going to get a little attention for itself. Based on these spy photos, the 1 Series hatchback (F20/F21), which is not offered in the US, will be getting a minor facelift in the near future.
From what we can see in these images, the updated 1 Series will definitely be getting a tweaked front end, with most of the attention focusing on the air intakes and grille. Our shooter tells us that it is possible that the headlights may yet be reworked in some way by the time we see this car in production form. It still isn't clear if we'll ever see this bodystyle or the next-gen 1 Series in the US, but our most recent report seems to indicate that the car's fortunes will depend somewhat on how well the Mercedes CLA-Class and Audi A3 sell.

2014 BMW M235i

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

We know a number of BMW owners who reside in the Munich brand's core demographic - upper-five- and six-figure professionals who like to keep their automotive brand credentials as highly respected among their peers as their alma maters or the letters after their names. Before heading to Las Vegas to drive the new M235i, we asked four of those owners, "What did you think of the E30 3 Series?" Although phrased differently, every one of them had the same answer: "What's that?"
You can counter that we just happened to query a tiny and ignorant sample size, and it's possible that you're right. Nevertheless, in every case,we were speaking to BMW's core demographic, the increasing legion of buyers who have fostered another year of record growth and are responsible for BMW retaining its global luxury title for nine straight years. Question that, and we'll refer you to BMW's marketing department, its several hundred PowerPoint slides and several thousand pages of research that prove the point.
That second-generation E30 3 Series built a name, a brand and an entire segment by defining BMW-ness as superlative driving dynamics meets luxury - shortened to the phrase, "The Ultimate Driving Machine." Thirty years later, just being a part of BMW-ness and luxury is enough for the majority of buyers. The superlative handling, that's optional, and 150 hairy guys meet every Tuesday to keep the old religion going, light torches, sing dirges to the siren long gone and bang on their keyboards about the apostasies of modern buyers.

Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo torquing its way toward Frankfurt

Mon, 09 Sep 2013

Few tuners benefit from the kind of factory support that Alpina does, giving the pseudo-aftermarket firm nearly as much official status as BMW's own M division. And this is its latest product.
Set to debut, as expected, at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week is the new Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo, which you can consider, for all intents and purposes, the diesel M3 that BMW never built. While the outgoing D3 (which was Alpina's best-selling model) used a four-cylinder engine, Autocar reports that the new model packs a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo inline-six diesel to drive a respectable 345 horsepower but a mammoth 516 pound-feet of torque to either the rear wheels or all four through the optional availability of xDrive. (European buyers will also be able to choose between sedan and wagon bodystyles.)
The engine is the same as you'd find in the XD3 and D5 (Alpina's diesel performance versions of the X3 and 5 Series, respectively), but in the lighter 3 Series form can propel the D3 Bi-Turbo up to 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds and on to an Autobahn-crunching top speed of 173 mph. And as per Alpina tradition, visual cues are minimal, with a subtly optimized aero kit and 19- or available 20-inch alloy wheels. Unfortunately, the 7 Series-based B7 is the only Alpina we get on this side of the Atlantic, but an oil-drenched performance enthusiast can dream.
