All A6 models now have standard curtain-type airbags, and Audi stretches its warranty of the entire vehicle by one year to four years/50,000 miles, including scheduled maintenance. The A6 is the midpriced model in Audi’s lineup, and it returns in sedan and wagon (called Avant) styling with a choice of front-wheel drive or Quattro permanently engaged all-wheel drive. Audi is the luxury division of Volkswagen, and about 80 percent of Audi’s U.S. sales are Quattro models. Curtain airbags that deploy along the side windows in side collisions are a new standard feature on the A6 2.8 and 2.7T models, instead of as an option in previous model years. They already were standard on the top-shelf A6 4.2. The Electronic Stabilization Program, a lateral-skid control system, is a new standard feature on the 2.7T and 4.2 sedans and optional on the 2.8 sedan. Steering-wheel controls for the audio system and a cellular telephone are now standard on the 4.2 sedan and optional on the others. Exterior The A6’s smooth, flowing shape was introduced for the 1998 model year. Revamped front styling with a longer hood debuted last year to accommodate a new V-8 engine. At 192 inches overall, the A6 is the same size as the Acura 3.2TL and slightly longer than the Lexus ES 300. Interior The elegant, luxurious interior provides ample room for five adults, and all are treated to leather-trimmed seats. Wood trim on the doors, center console and dashboard add touches of warmth. The dashboard has attractive white-on-black gauges, but Audi uses red instrument lighting that some find too harsh on the eyes. Audi says the A6’s trunk holds 15.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is unexceptional, but it looks much larger than that. The cargo floor is wide and goes well forward, and the trunk opening is large enough to easily load bulky items. The rear seatback folds for additional space. One of the A6’s coolest features is the Warm Weather Package, which includes a solar sunroof that activates interior fans when the car is parked in the sun. Under the Hood Audi uses engine size to designate models. The A6 2.8 uses a 2.8-liter V-6 with 200 horsepower. The A6 2.7T has a 2.7-liter V-6 with dual turbochargers and 250 hp, and the A6 4.2 has a 4.2-liter V-8 with 300 hp — the same engine used in the A8 sedan. Safety Safety features are abundant. Besides the required front airbags, all models have side-impact airbags for the front seats and curtain airbags that protect the heads and upper bodies of all outboard passengers. Side airbags for the rear seats are optional. Antilock brakes also are standard. |

Porsche offering 250-hp 718 Cayman, Boxster in China
Tue, Aug 9 2016Porsche is studying a new approach in the lucrative Chinese market – less power. Automotive News Europe reports that the famed German manufacturer will sell less powerful versions of the 718 Cayman and Boxster in the People's Republic. In fact, the new cars are already on Porsche's Chinese consumer page. The hope, 718 chief Jan Roth told Automotive News Europe, is to replicate the success Porsche's sister company Audi has had with the TT. "A lot of the TTs that Audi sells in China, the smaller displacement 1.8-liter versions with rear-wheel instead of all-wheel-drive, are priced below that, Mercedes too," Roth said. We're guessing the comments about rear-wheel drive and a 1.8-liter engine are either typos or something was lost in translation, because Audi's Chinese website only lists a 2.0-liter engine, and most gearheads know the TT rides on a front-drive platform. Audi's success is largely down to price – 542,800 yuan ($81,549, at today's rates) for a base TT. Roth called 600,000 yuan "a magical threshold for customers in China." To hit that price point, Porsche is dropping the 718's 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder – offered North America and Europe with 300 horsepower in base form – to 250 ponies. The Cayman starts at 588,000 yuan ($88,340) while the Boxster is 598,000 yuan ($89,842). The 350-hp Cayman S will carry on unchanged. According to ANE, Roth said Porsche's Chinese strategy could drive 718 sales up to 4,500 units a year by 2017, nearly double the 2,500 Boxsters and Caymans sold in 2015. Could a similar lower-tiered strategy work in the US? We'll need to put on our speculation hats. In the US, the base car is about 81 percent of the price of the 350-horsepower S model. If Porsche were to offer the same discount for the hypothetical, 250-hp 718s, it could set the starting prices at $43,659 for the Cayman and $45,360 for the Boxster. That lines up neatly with the $43,500 TT Coupe, but this theoretical 250-hp Boxster would fall about $1,640 less than Audi's soft top. We shouldn't forget Porsche's expansive options catalog – we doubt there'd be a lot of sub-$50,000 718s on dealer lots. But still, slashing over $10,000 off the price of a $54,000 car is a big ask – Porsche would almost have to de-content such a lower-tier model. But – and this is a Kim K-sized but – moving the 718 downmarket would open the brand to a new range of consumers. Not only would these new cars be the cheapest sportscars from Porsche money could buy.
Next Audi RS4 to get V6 turbo, US sales still unclear
Mon, 24 Feb 2014Audi's high-performance S models have forged a reputation in the US for offering wonderful driving dynamics in a package that doesn't scream, "I bought a sport sedan." However, its even higher-performance RS models are still somewhat of a rarity here. While the RS5 and RS7 are in the current US lineup, many of the wild RS models that Europe gets, like the RS6 Avant (pictured above), never make it to these shores. Unfortunately, that might not be changing anytime soon with the next-gen RS4.
The RS4 will follow the lead of the next BMW M3/M4 and (rumored) next Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG and make the switch to a smaller turbocharged powerplant. According to an Audi insider speaking to Car and Driver, the next RS4 will drop the last generation's 4.2-liter V8 in favor of a turbocharged V6. The engine block will likely be shared with the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 in the regular S4 but fitted with two turbochargers. Power would likely be around 400 horsepower to match the 425-hp M3 and rumored 450-hp C-Class AMG.
Unfortunately, the RS might not make it across the pond to our waiting hands because the source says no decision has been made to export them yet. Obviously, we hope that Audi makes the right decision and brings the next RS4 here.
Control your Audi with your Apple TV, if you want to
Thu, Jan 7 2016Not to dash your hopes right up top, but this isn't a way to remotely drive an R8 from the comfort of your living room, or even summon it from the garage. Also, you'll need the new fourth-generation Apple TV (and a real TV hooked up to it) as well as a 2017 A4 or Q7. What Audi is offering is basically a version of the Audi MMI connect app distilled for the streaming media box. Things you can do include locking and unlocking the car, setting it to heat up or cool down before you hop in, and viewing the status of the car. (No screenshot was available from Audi, so you're looking at the iPhone version of the app up top. Just imagine it larger and more horizontal.) Who's it for? People who have the latest Apple TV, a new Audi, and would rather control the latter with the former on a big screen than a smartphone. In other words, we're not sure. We do wager that there's a decent amount of overlap between Audi drivers and tech early adopters, so someone will get excited by this. And since the new Apple TV is based on iOS, it probably wasn't too tough to port the iPhone version of the app over. Like a lot of what we're seeing at CES this week, this is likely a small step in the direction of increasing connectivity between all of the digital stuff in our lives and our cars. We'll get more excited when the family flatscreen turns into a live window of what your car is looking at. But also terrified.
