Audi billboard tracks pedestrians like prison escapees
Wed, Oct 14 2015Audi's adaptive Matrix LED headlights can actively dim and direct light around the road to make driving safer at night. Unfortunately, the tech runs afoul of Department of Transportation rules, so it isn't currently available in the United States. For an idea of what you're missing, a marketing stunt for the new A4 in Belgium is illuminating the night and making pedestrians in the intersection more visible, and safer. The only problem is, it also makes them look like fugitives making an escape. From a giant billboard near the Brussels Central Station, the LEDs from a massive Audi A4 can light up whole intersection. Whenever a pedestrian or cyclist enters the area at night, they are tracked the whole way in a radiant pillar of blue luminescence. Based on this clip, the lights look bright enough to temporarily blind some passersby. Despite the unintended consequences, the stunt is still a very visible demonstration of Audi's headlight technology. Related Video: The video meant to be presented here is no longer available. Wed, Mar 2 2016Sending a self-driving race car around a track with nobody inside seems pointless – there's no driver to enjoy the ride, and the car certainly isn't getting a thrill out of it. But the students performing research with Stanford University's Audi TTS test rig "Shelley" (not to be confused with Audi's own self-driving race cars) are getting a kick out of the numbers generated by the machine. "A race car driver can use all of a car's functionality to drive fast," says Stanford Professor Chris Gerdes. "We want to access that same functionality to make driving safer." The teams push the car to speeds over 120mph and the computers have executed lap times nearly as fast as professional drivers. However, they also spend a lot of time maneuvering at 50 to 75 mph, the speeds where accidents are most likely to happen. That way, the students can figure out how to incorporate braking, throttle and maneuvering to develop new types of automatic collision avoidance algorithms. Better technology, for instance, could have saved Google from a recent slow-speed accident where its vehicle was struck by a bus. During race days, students break into teams to perform different types of research. "Once you get to the track, things can go differently than you expect. So it's an excellent lesson of advanced planning," says Gerdes. In the latest rounds of testing, for instance, one PhD student developed emergency lane-change algorithms, while another recorded a skilled human driver in an attempt to convert his behavior into a driving algorithm. The main goal, of course, is to prepare students for something they may not have expected -- an automotive industry that is adopting self-driving technology at breakneck speeds. Audi moving ahead with Q1 crossover

Audi crossovers have been getting smaller with each passing year. What started with the Q7 has since downsized to the Q5, then to the Q3, and now reports coming in from Germany reaffirm speculation that Ingolstadt is preparing to go one more size down with a Q1.
The new pint-sized premium crossover would likely share the platform that underpins the Volkswagen Polo and Audi's own A1. Although the architecture has already been modified to accommodate all-wheel drive, Autobild suggests that the Q1 would be a front-drive-only affair, which might limit its appeal somewhat, but then most buyers probably wouldn't opt for all-wheel drive anyway.
