597-hp Audi RS7 Performance coming to US

Thu, Oct 22 2015

The Audi RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback certainly aren't hurting for power. Their 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8s offer mountains of muscle as tall as the Alps. However, the engineers at the Four Rings are pushing those peaks just even higher for the new Performance versions of the pair. Tweaks to the engine management, bring horsepower up to 597 ponies and 516 lb-ft of torque. Temporary overboost can take the twist to 553 lb-ft, though. This high-performance duo can haul passengers with aplomb by hitting 62 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds – two tenths quicker than a regular RS. Even more impressive, the 12.1-second run to 124 mph also takes 1.4 seconds less than the standard version. Top speed remains the same 155 mph, but the optional Dynamic Package takes off the limiter to let the RS6 reach 174 mph and the RS7 go 189.5 mph. The eight-speed tiptronic remains from the standard RS versions, and it routes power through the Quattro all-wheel drive system with a 40:60 front-rear split. An optional sport differential at the back can also provide some extra assistance. Both Performance models come standard with an adaptive air suspension, but for those willing to spend a little more a stiffer RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control is available, as well. The Performance pair launches in Germany at the beginning of November, but there's reason to get excited in the US, too. Audi spokesperson Mark Dahncke confirms to Autoblog that the RS7 Performance is coming here. More details about it should arrive around the Los Angeles Auto Show, he said. The Audi RS 6 Avant performance* and Audi RS 7 Sportback performance* further hone the brand's sporty profile. Their 4.0 TFSI engine with 445 kW (605 hp) and up to 750 Nm (553.2 lb ft) of torque push acceleration (3.7 seconds) nearly to levels usually reserved for supercars. Fuel consumption remains unchanged at 9.6 and 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (24.5 and 24.8 US mpg), respectively, corresponding to 223 and 221 g CO2 per km (358.9 and 355.7 g/mi). New Audi Q5 refines original model's winning formula

Thu, Sep 29 2016

The first Audi Q5 made a name for itself as a baby Q7, hitting a Goldilocks zone in the crossover segment and challenging BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus for supremacy in what would become one of the luxury market's most important segments. The Q5 is already Audi's best-selling vehicle globally, underscoring its importance to the German brand. Like its predecessor, the second-generation Q5 takes the Q7's looks and tech, then distills it into a smaller package. But unlike the Q7, the Q5 doesn't look quite so dowdy in its redesigned body. We'll attribute that to the smaller front and rear overhangs, which keep the Q5 looking like a crossover instead of a high-riding wagon. The face is mostly a carbon copy of the Q7's, with a prominent grille featuring a silver surround and flanked by a set of clean, stylish headlights. In back, the smaller Audi gets more expressive taillights that harken back to the first-generation model in their lighting signature. We aren't really sure what Audi was going for with its two-tier rear bumper, but it doesn't work and is inarguably the worst piece of an otherwise fashionable design. Aside from restyling the Q5's body, Audi managed to both expand it in every direction and trim nearly 200 pounds of body fat through a mix of "maximum tensile strength" steel and aluminum. Audi is also promising an impressive aerodynamics gain for the new body – the company's engineers slashed the coefficient of drag from 0.33 to 0.30. That should mean a quieter and more efficient drive. Like the Q7, the new Q5 benefits from Audi's push into advanced driver information systems. It gets the 12.3-inch TFT display, also known as Virtual Cockpit, on top of the 8.3-inch MMI display atop the center stack. MMI takes a page from Apple with its Personal Route Assist. Much as CarPlay will automatically display how long it takes you to get home, Audi's new system can study an owner's behavior and suggest the best route to a given spot, even when the navigation isn't active. While we're geeked about the new tech, the powertrain front is less newsy. The European press release lists one gas engine – a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder – and four TDI powertrains. Those latter engines are dead to the US, as Audi faces the backlash from parent company Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal.

Audi R8 E-Tron back on production map thanks to new battery tech?

Sun, 15 Dec 2013

Contrary to our October 2012 report, it appears Audi's R8 E-Tron program is back on track, if a report from Australia is to be believed. Drive is reporting that the German brand has changed its mind and won't be sacking the program, despite previously stated concerns about the quality and price of batteries for the R8-based EV.
We last saw the R8 E-Tron prototype in the snows of northern Europe, although footage of the car has been non-existent since that wintry test. This new report claims that a small number of R8 E-Trons will see production, which gels with what we heard back in 2012 and supposed earlier this year. Apparently, some new sort of lithium-ion battery technology has allowed for a drastic increase in range, with rumors of the original 130 miles going up to around 250. According to Drive, this makes the project feasible again.
"Our engineers and technicians are further developing the car and its electric drive system. The range has grown significantly, allowing the potential for a small-scale production," an unnamed, but high-ranking Audi employee told the Aussies.
