The pre-race and first in-race report from Le Mans
Sat, 22 Jun 2013The 2013, 90th anniversary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has begun, tragedy marking the opening laps with the death of Allan Simonsen. We're at the track now as a guest of Audi and plan to stay through the evening, and even we haven't been able to find out what caused the accident - the only video is from just after the incident, and beyond the statement from ACO there's been no more news. The Aston Martin in the LM GTE Am class and its all-Danish drivers had taken pole in its class and was one of the favorites to win.
The pre-race report will come first, and even thought we can't spoil the race because we're only five hours into it at the time of writing, we'll put all of the news at the end in case you don't even want the updates.

Audi recalls A6, A7, and A3 in two airbag-related campaigns
Sat, Jan 2 2016Audi will recall a total of 21,978 vehicles in the US across two campaigns. The Basics: Audi's larger recall covers 21,074 examples of 2012-2013 A6 sedans with manufacturing dates between March 28, 2011, and March 25, 2013, and the 2012-2013 A7 models built between January 25, 2011, and March 19, 2013. The Problem: In examples of the sedans with heated and cooled seats, the Passenger Occupant Detection System can malfunction and prevent the passenger's side airbag from deploying in a crash. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The Fix: Dealers will repair the Passenger Occupant Detection System. If You Own One: Audi will begin the recall in February 2016. The Basics: In the smaller safety campaign, Audi will recall 904 examples of the 2015 A3 Cabriolet built between June 5, 2014, and April 1, 2015. The Problem: The driver or front passenger seat covers might not have the correct stitching, and this could prevent the side airbag from properly deploying in a crash. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The Fix: Dealers will replace the seatback covers on affected seats. If You Own One: Audi will begin the recall in February 2016. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Audi A6 vehicles manufactured March 28, 2011, to March 25, 2013, and 2012-2013 Audi A7 vehicles manufactured January 25, 2011, to March 19, 2013. In vehicles with heated and cooled seats, the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS), used to enable the front passenger air bags, may malfunction and prevent the passenger-side air bags from deploying in a crash. CONSEQUENCE: An air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of occupant injury in a crash. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will install a PODS system repair kit, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2016. Audi S3 pitted against BMW M135i in track battle
Fri, 07 Mar 2014Audi and BMW have long been enemies on both the road and the track, with their respective M and S/RS lines duking it out to the delight of auto enthusiasts everywhere. In this video from Evo, two of the rivalry's newest combatants take to the track - the Audi S3 and the BMW M135i.
The new Audi S3, which is finally coming to America, throws down with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder. 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque are deployed to a Quattro all-wheel-drive system via a six-speed, S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission, allowing the five-door Audi to scamper to 60 in under five seconds.
The BMW, which Americans will know as a long-roof version of the new M235i Coupe, comes to the track with 320 ponies and 331 lb-ft of torque. That's a good bit more than the Audi, but the M135i has only two wheels to send its power to, an eight-speed single-clutch automatic (a six-speed manual is available) and a slightly higher curb weight.
