Model Overview

There is much to love about the 2011 Audi R8. Audi has added a Spyder model, equipped with the 5.2-liter V10. The car's canvas top takes just 19 seconds to open or close and can be operated at speeds up to 31 mph. Motive power  -  5.2-liter V10 producing 525 hp and 391 ft-lb. Both units are mid-mounted just behind the passenger cabin and benefit from FSI direct injection. Power is put to the pavement through a standard 6-speed manual transmission or through Audi's R-tronic 6-speed sequential automatic. Quattro permanent all-wheel drive is standard, with rear-biased torqued distribution. Audi claims 12 mpg city and 19 mpg highway and 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds from the V8, while the V10 is rated at the same fuel economy but it scoots to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The R8 is built on an all-aluminum Space Frame technology, which offers a lightweight, stiff, compliant chassis. Aluminum double-wishbone front and rear suspension is paired with Audi Magnetic Ride, a system that offers push-button control over a magnetically charged fluid whose viscosity continuously adapts to driving dynamics. Drivers choose between "Normal" or "Sport" modes to customize the R8's handling. The result is improved driving dynamics, reduced body movement, better road handling and enhanced overall ride comfort. Inside, the R8 features heated Nappa leather sport seats with 10-way power adjustability, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, metallic inlays, and aluminum pedals. SIRIUS satellite radio, HomeLink universal remote and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity are standard in all R8s. In the 5.2 coupe and Spyder, a Bang & Olufsen sound system comes standard, as does Audi MMI Navigation. Unique to the Spyder is a Bluetooth microphone integrated into the seat belt. All 5.2 R8s feature LED headlights and taillights, while the former is optional on 4.2 coupes. Carbon fiber exterior accents are optional across the range, and include exterior mirrors, doorsill inserts, and distinctive sideblade. On all R8s, 19-inch wheels are the norm, with several optional styles to choose from Safety is paramount in Audi's supercar, so all R8s include driver and passenger advanced dual-stage frontal airbags, seat-mounted head and thorax airbags and knee airbags. Audi Hill Hold Assist comes standard on 5.2 coupe and Spyder models, and Audi parking system plus with rearview camera is standard on the Spyder, optional on coupes. Popular packages add extra leather to the cockpit, as well as extra carbon fiber to the exterior. A park-assist system with rearview camera, power-folding mirrors and a navigation system are also optional.

Audi promises next A8 on sale by year's end, LED Matrix lamps to be available [w/video]

Sun, 30 Jun 2013

Audi has just released details about its new Matrix LED headlamps, but just as illuminating as the new lighting technology is confirmation that the next A8 will appear "on the market at the end of 2013." While Audi is calling the model new, expectations - and the spy shots above - suggest more of a traditional mid-cycle refresh.
Audi says that its new A8 Matrix lights are comprised of 25 high-beam LEDs, clustered in groups of five paired with reflectors. Unlike traditional automatic high-beam setups, the Matrix array is so precise that it "blanks out light that would shine directly onto oncoming and preceding vehicles" while continuing to use full high-beam power on other sections of the road and shoulder not occupied by other vehicles. Further, the camera- and electronic brain-governed system can dim or extinguish LEDs as necessary to deal with traffic. The active system also differs from today's adaptive headlamps by not requiring servo motors to direct light, yet they can still function as cornering headlamps - ones that can predict a road's trajectory because they are linked with the car's GPS system. Interestingly, the system also works with Audi's optional night vision system. When the latter detects a pedestrian in the dark, it automatically flashes a batch of LEDs to put both the driver and pedestrian on notice about each others' presence.
Only one problem in all of this trick lighting business: they aren't legal here in the US, at least not yet. Audi and other automakers are currently petitioning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, trying to sell the government agency on the technology's safety benefits. For the moment, Matrix headlamps are likely to remain forbidden fruit, but you can check them out and see what you might be missing in the video below. As for the 2015 A8, we're guessing it'll surface at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata named World Car of the Year

Thu, Mar 24 2016

Kicking off Day Two of the New York Auto Show, the World Car of the Year awards are finally being handed out. The overall winner is, as God himself intended, the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It beat the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. The unique thing about these awards are that they aren't limited to the US domestic market (that's why they're called the World Car of the Year awards). For example, nominees for the overall award included the Skoda Superb, Renault Kadjar, and Subaru Levorg. In the Performance category, the forbidden fruit was repped by the Honda Civic Type R. But both the Civic and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe were beat out by a far more expensive competitor – the new Audi R8. The fourth-generation Toyota Prius and the second-generation Chevrolet Volt, were two of the big finalists for the World Green Car of the Year award. They both lost out, though, to the Mirai fuel-cell car. Yes, a hydrogen car beat out two of the world's premiere hybrids. The luxury race that was perhaps the hardest to predict. That's because each of the three finalists have received near universal acclaim. In the end, though, the BMW 7 Series beat out the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. Finally, we have the World Car Design of the Year, where the overall winner (MX-5) and the Mazda CX-3 faced off against the new Jaguar XE. While both the CX-3 and XE are handsome vehicles, the WCOTY committee realized the answer is always Miata, and awarded Mazda's iconic roadster another 2016 award. MAZDA MX-5 - 2016 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR NEW YORK – March 24, 2016 - For Immediate Release The Road to World Car journey ended today with the declaration of the MAZDA MX-5 as the 2016 World Car of the Year. The winner was announced during a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show, Bridgestone Corporation and Autoneum. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the partnership between World Car and the New York show, and the third consecutive year that the World Car Awards have retained their ranking as the number one automotive awards program in the world in terms of media reach. Mazda Motor Corporation is no stranger to the World Car Awards program – now in its 12th year. The Mazda2/Mazda Demio was the 2008 World Car of the Year. While the Mazda3 (2014), Mazda6 (2013) and Mazda MX-5 have all earned "Top Three in the World" status as voted by our 70 plus international automotive journalists that make up the jury.

Trump calls Germans 'very bad,' vows to stop their car sales in US

Fri, May 26 2017

TAORMINA, Italy -Talks between President Trump and other leaders of the world's rich nations at the G7 summit on Friday were expected to be "robust" and "challenging" after he had lambasted NATO allies and condemned Germans as "very bad" for their trade policies. Trump's confrontational remarks in Brussels, on the eve of the two-day summit in the Mediterranean resort town of Taormina, cast a pall over a meeting at which America's partners had hoped to coax him into softening his stances on trade and climate change. According to German media reports, Trump condemned Germany as "very bad" for its trade policies in a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, signaling he might take steps to limit sales of German cars in the United States. "The Germans are bad, very bad," he reportedly told Juncker. "Look at the millions of cars that they're selling in the USA. Horrible. We're gonna stop that." White House economic adviser Gary Cohn on Friday confirmed the reports. "He said they're very bad on trade, but he doesn't have a problem with Germany." Cohn said Trump had pointed out during the meeting that his father had German roots in order to underscore the message that he had nothing against the German people. Trump's spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump had "tremendous respect" for Germany and had only complained about unfair trade practices in the meeting. Juncker called the reports in Spiegel Online and Sueddeutsche Zeitung exaggerated. The reports translated "bad" with the German word "boese," which can also mean "evil," leading to confusion when English-language media translated the German reports back into English. "The record has to be set straight," Juncker said, noting that the translation issue had exaggerated the seriousness of what Trump had said. "It's not true that the president took an aggressive approach when it came to the German trade surplus." "He said, like others have, that (the United States) has a problem with the German surplus. So he was not aggressive at all," Juncker added. In January, Trump threatened to slap a 35 percent tax on German auto imports. "If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax," he said. "I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 percent tax, then you can forget that." Last year, the U.S.
