Is the Audi R8 E-Tron project back on again?
Thu, 11 Apr 2013If you ask Audi about its R8 E-Tron prototype, the all-electric two-seater that was first shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the automaker will tell you that its development program is on hold. Yet, as we reported in January, limited production of the combustion-free coupe may be moving forward... information still officially unconfirmed by the automaker.
New images of the electrified R8 undergoing winter testing in Europe have emerged (above and in our gallery), and the car has been spotted running in Spain as well. Both sightings support reports that the E-Tron, with its 150-mile battery range and 8:09 Nürburgring time, may be back in business. Does the program have a green light, or is Audi merely trying to take some of the thunder from the BMW i8?
Whatever the case, if the R8 E-Tron does eventually make it into showrooms - and we are now led to believe it will - expect production volume to be very low. Assuming it doesn't get shelved again, of course.

At last year's show, hydrogen fuel cell concepts from Honda and Toyota joined a lease-ready Hyundai Tucson FCEV to cast a green hue over the convention center. This year, automakers took us a step closer to a fuel cell future by offering drives of their hydrogen-electric hybrids. Translogic host Jonathon Buckley takes a ride in the Toyota Mirai, which is headed for production in 2016. Next Audi R8 seen and heard in this spy video
Thu, 27 Mar 2014A few weeks ago, our clandestine spy photographers brought home the first good look at the next-generation Audi R8. We were all pretty stoked.
Seemingly following the game plan of the recently shown Audi TT, the next R8 looks to be an evolutionary update on a supercar form that pretty much everyone loves.
Today, the same shooters that snapped the car in stills have delivered some pretty compelling moving pictures of the thing. Captured both in some less-than-inspiring around-town traffic situations and out on the Nürburgring, the video delivers our first taste of the new R8's auditory splendor. Well... a taste of it, anyway.
