Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign

The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space. Audi bringing Q3 Stateside after all?

One of the major changes that made to the Audi SQ5 to get it ready for the US market was a ride height that was lifted by 1.2 inches compared to its European counterparts. The small increase allowed the SQ5 to retain its "light truck" classification of the Q5 for emissions regulations. In a similar move, Car and Driver is reporting that the Audi Q3 crossover will also be joining the Audi lineup in the US once it receives a facelift and taller ride height.
Expect this facelift to fit in with other recent product updates including the Q5, which mainly focused on a cleaner, more upscale front end and the company's signature LED running lights. The report says that Audi could bring the Q3 Stateside "within a year or two," and it also says that a souped-up RS Q3 will follow close behind. This performance version of the compact crossover gets its power from a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five-cylinder engine shared with the Audi TT RS.

Audi spotted testing new TT RS Roadster at the Nurburgring

Spied testing on the Nordschleife in Roadster form is the forthcoming Audi TT RS. It's based, of course, on the new TT that we've already seen in S spec, but this one will be even faster. To that end, powering the new convertible (and its fixed-roof coupe counterpart) is expected to be Audi's signature turbocharged inline-five driving a good 400 horsepower or so to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual or Audi's S-tronic transmission. That output ought to put it in prime position to outgun the likes of the Porsche 718 Boxster S with its 350 hp and the new Mercedes-AMG SLC43 that's good for 362 hp. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is isn't far behind with its 335 hp, though a new Z4 M would be a welcome addition to the party. We're expecting the brand of the Four Rings to reveal the TT RS coupe before long, and the roadster should follow six months or so afterwards. Then Audi's RS line will be replete with performance models including the RS7 we get here, the RS3, RS6, and RS Q3 they sell overseas, and this pair of TT RS two-doors. Related Video:
