Personal Statement:

I’ve been in the automotive business for more than 35 years.  This is my personal vehicle – and the first A8L I’ve owned.  By far, it’s the most impressive car I’ve ever driven and that you’ll ever drive.  Between the adaptive cruise, the collision avoidance system and the lane change warning, you'll swear the car drives itself.  It protects itself and its occupants.  With the cruise, you can be in rush hour traffic and never have to touch the brake or the gas pedal.  Amazing!  There’s a giant difference between the V6 (3.0) and the V8 (4.0) in both driving and price.  The combination of motor (V8), color combination (Glacier White/Beige) and extensive options makes this car rare – and hence, the price.  If you don’t believe me, just try to find just one like it anywhere in the country for sale.  It doesn’t exist.  If you want sporty – you’ve got it.  If you want economy – you’ve got it.  I’ve never been in a vehicle that isn’t effected by high crosswinds – until now.  The ride and quiet are the same as the highest end Mercedes or BMW.  Technically, this is better than anything out there.  The driver controls (selector tool, etc.) are far and away superior to Mercedes or BMW.  It feels natural.  The all-wheel-drive is a necessity in snow and rain.  The camera system is the most impressive of all luxury vehicles with the overhead viewing and the ability to peak around corners from the front or rear before pulling out.  Other lower end manufacturers use this as the model for what they want to be, but one drive will set the Audi apart.  I’ve never had a better car and am convinced there isn’t one out there.  The “L” is the long/limousine model.  I’m 6’4” and the back seat in this car makes you feel like you’re paying extra for the ride.  It’s been babied – washed every week, waxed every month (never a buffer), and in a garage at home and at the office.  To sum it up - It’s impressive.

Car companies may need to start curbing model proliferation

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

Looking at the current automotive landscape, especially from German makers, you quickly get the impression that less definitely isn't more. BMW alone offers its 3 Series platform in practically every segment possible, including the regular sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe, which would seem to be direct competitors. Porsche might be the winner, though, with 20 different variants of the 911 listed for sale on its US website. However, some of this model madness might be reaching an end as companies begin cutting back spending or shifting money to other priorities.
According to Yahoo Finance, the offerings from the German automakers are up 25 percent over the past three years to over 200 models in Europe. The peak is expected to come around 2018 at 230 separate vehicles, according to consulting company PwC.
Amazingly, BMW, which is among the poster children for this model explosion, might be changing its tune. "I'm sure there will be points in the future where we look at certain cars and say, 'Maybe we need to think differently now,'" said head of sales Ian Robertson in an interview, according to Yahoo Finance. The statement certainly sounds shocking coming from a company rumored to have 23 front-wheel-drive vehicles all using a single platform on the way.

2014 Audi SQ5

Thu, 03 Oct 2013

No Diesel? No Problem
With the exception of a handful of markets (including the US), the Audi SQ5 was a pioneer for the company's S/RS performance line as it was the first model to wear the badge and also get diesel power. Our general "everything is better with a diesel" mentality was put to the test when we first heard we would be getting a non-diesel SQ5 in the US (despite the availability of the diesel-powered Q5 TDI here already), but as usual we can only blame our federal emissions standards. As Audi tells it, the SQ5 TDI engine would require AdBlue to meet US emissions regulations, and the packaging of such a system just wasn't possible, so the global SQ5's diesel engine was replaced by a gasoline-powered V6 borrowed from the Audi S4/S5. To show that little, if anything, was lost in translation from diesel to gas, we headed to southwestern Colorado to spend an afternoon with the all-new 2014 Audi SQ5.
Our drive program had us taking the SQ5 from Durango, CO to the city of Gateway, before heading to Grand Junction the next morning. There's nothing like spending five hours strapped into a seat, traversing hill and mountain, to truly test a vehicle's comfort and driving dynamics. From the first touch of the SQ5's push-button starter, we knew this was no ordinary Q5. As the engine came to life with a deep burble and raspy pops, and we spent the rest of the day trying to come to terms with the fact that not everything needs a diesel. Wait. What?!

Next Audi R8 seen and heard in this spy video

Thu, 27 Mar 2014

A few weeks ago, our clandestine spy photographers brought home the first good look at the next-generation Audi R8. We were all pretty stoked.
Seemingly following the game plan of the recently shown Audi TT, the next R8 looks to be an evolutionary update on a supercar form that pretty much everyone loves.
Today, the same shooters that snapped the car in stills have delivered some pretty compelling moving pictures of the thing. Captured both in some less-than-inspiring around-town traffic situations and out on the Nürburgring, the video delivers our first taste of the new R8's auditory splendor. Well... a taste of it, anyway.
