Audi teases E-Tron Sportback concept for Shanghai

Mon, Apr 17 2017

Auto Shanghai is just around the corner, and Audi will be there with a new electrified vehicle concept. Audi isn't saying much about the car, called the E-Tron Sportback, but it has released a couple teaser shots as well as a handful of design sketches to give us a glimpse of what to expect later this week. In one image, Audi design boss Marc Lichte lifts up a corner of the sheet to show part of the E-Tron Sportback's front fascia. We see an illuminated Audi logo glowing through the fabric, and detail shots show that feature duplicated on the rear of the vehicle. The car's large wheels are pushed far to the corners, adding a squat, muscular look to its coupe-like silhouette. The slender side mirrors in the sketch mimic the slim look of the headlights. Rear lighting stretches across the back of the vehicle below the liftgate. While the "E-Tron" moniker clues us in to the car's green sensibilities, it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be purely powered by electricity – recall the A3 E-Tron PHEV. The lack of a visible tailpipe in photos or sketches, though, suggests that a proper battery electric vehicle is a likelihood for this concept. That would fit with Audi's plans to release more EVs in the future, following the launch of an E-Tron SUV. Hopefully we'll get more details about the luxury brand's electric future when the E-Tron Sportback concept gets its debut later this week. Audi reveals next-gen TT interior at CES

Tue, 07 Jan 2014

Audi has taken the somewhat unusual step of unveiling much of the interior of its upcoming TT Coupe at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. That's unusual, because they haven't shown us the car yet. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised - with the proliferation of technology in automobiles these days, it's probably time we start considering them as much electronic devices as transportation devices.
While Audi has long been recognized as a leader in interior design, this new TT features an instrument cluster that is wildly different from what we've become accustomed to from the Four-Ring brand. Audi is calling its fully digital system a "virtual cockpit," and with its 12.3-inch LCD screen situated directly in front of the driver, it does away with the company's traditional Multi-Media Interface (MMI) display in the center stack. Two modes are offered, one classic option with large gauges and another more oriented to infotainment.
Besides electronics, the actual hard parts of the interior also show plenty of new thinking. With the removal of the central screen, Audi has been able to streamline its instrument panel to resemble a wing of sorts, with jet-like HVAC vents that house their own controls. Two more points for controls are presented to the driver, with buttons on the flat-bottom steering wheel and another set on the center tunnel.

Audi A3 G-Tron offers big range, few emissions

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

Audi is exploring a variety of sustainable transportation technologies beyond the traditional diesel, hybrid, plug-in and electric options, including the compressed natural gas A3 Sportback G-Tron that debuted today at the Geneva Motor Show.
The most interesting thing about this rather innocuous-looking A3 Sportback is that when run on Audi e-gas, the car becomes completely carbon neutral, emitting no more CO2 than was chemically input in this special fuel's production. Audi has already broken ground on a new plant - powered by renewable energy, of course - that uses electrolysis to produce e-gas, which could then be made available through any natural gas distribution network.
