I purchased this Audi in January 2008 with 34,000 miles off a 3 year lease. It's been mostly a commuting and road trip car averaging about 10,000 miles per year since.  It has not been driven hard and has been garaged the entire time I've owned the car.  It's a great driving car and quite comfortable even on long trips (as long as you've only got one passenger). And, when the weather is nice, driving with the top down is great fun.  I've recently acquired a new vehicle and just don't have the garage space to keep the Audi.

Five tires (full size spare) were replaced at 81,500 miles in December 2011 with OEM Continentals. The car had new Continentals when I purchased so I got 56,000 miles on the set by rotating the full size spare in.  The current tires should be good for another 40,000 by that measure.

Rear brakes and rotors were replaced in October 2011 at about 79,000 miles.  The rear pads lasted about 45,000 miles but they must have been quite "soft" because the front pads hardly wore at all during that time.  After the new rear Akebono pads were installed, the front and rear wheels seem to have about the same amount of brake dust suggesting that the pads are wearing more evenly front to back now. The front pads are still at about 3/8" of pad showing - should be good for a while yet.

Cosmetically the car is in fairly good condition.  There is one chip in the hood from road debris (1/8" diameter) and a few smaller ones.  There is a small scratch on each of the rear quarter panels that is mostly visible after a good wash. There is a slight scratch on the rear bumper that will likely buff out.  One wheel has a bit of damage from curb contact.  (picture provided)  Included is a small bottle of touch up paid.  The driver's side headlight lens is a touch hazy.  There is no other body damage. 

The convertible top is in good shape. There is no damage to the fabric outside or in. The weatherstripping is still pliable and is not damaged.  I've been in some severe rainstorms and have never had any water leaks.  Occasionally one of the cords that is part of the mechanism that tensions the interior fabric when the top is up gets loose and has to be retied.  The optional windscreen that installs behind the front seats is included.  This is a necessity if you want to drive with the top down on the highway or on a cooler day.  

Everything on the interior of the car works.  The heated seats are nice to have on those really cold days.  The HomeLink buttons in the visor that operate a garage door opener are a nice convenience as well.  All manuals as well as two remote keys are included.  There is also a valet key. (not pictured)

The driver's side seat adjustment control lever is fairly easy to dislodge but just as easy to put back on.  The glove box had the typical Audi stuck lowering piston issue which eventually broke the hinge on the one side.  I repaired the plastic hinge with metal reinforcement and refurbished the piston. (see picture)  The shelf in the trunk that defines that space that the top needs when folded down does not raise by the lever provided but can be raised by hand if need be.

This vehicle was involved in two minor accidents.  The first occurred in 2007 before I owned the car.  I don't know anything about that one other than what I can infer from the car.  It seems the car was hit in the rear and the rear bumper and trunk lid were replaced and/or repainted. It does not appear that there was any damage outside of that.  The satellite radio antenna hidden in the trunk lid does not work so I had to add an after market magnetic antenna to the car.  The 2nd accident was when it was parked in my driveway and got the rear bumper and driver's side taillight damage by another car backing into it.  This was just cosmetic - the rear  bumper cover and taillight lens were replaced.

An issues that VW/Audi 1.8T engines sometimes exhibit is sludge.  Audi revised the oil spec to synthetic only and specified a larger oil filter to address the issue.  I do not believe that there are sludge issues with this car.  I have always used full synthetic and the larger oil filter for oil changes and top ups.  

Another issue that 1.8T engines of this vintage display is problems with the ignition coils.  This engine had the coils updated under Audi TSB in December 2009 at about 60,000 miles. Since the revised coils were installed there have been no issues.  I took the engine cover (the plastic with the Audi logo) off in the picture to show the coils - it is included.

Another common issue with Audi 1.8T and 2.0T engines is oil consumption.  This engine uses about a quart every 1,000 miles.  According to Audi, this is "normal" consumption.  I've been tracking the oil consumption for a few years (I can supply the data if you want to see it) and it hasn't changed much.  I have had the oil analysed (twice) and the reports do not show any unusual internal engine wear.  The last report (January 2012) said:

As of this sample, you're up to 7,000 miles and metals are still in the average range (which is based on just 5,600
miles). The make-up oil wasn't enough to keep the trace of fuel dilution out of the oil, though that's not a
serious problem. The viscosity was in the 5W/30 range. Keep your oil level full and go on up to the 10,000
mile interval you're aiming for. Monitor oil consumption.

A common issue with 1.8T engines is leaks at the rear coolant flange, J-plug and thermostat. These have all recently been replaced.  

The timing belt replacement (recommended at 75,000 miles) has not been done.

Audi builds its six-millionth Quattro-equipped car

All-wheel drive has become the norm particularly among German automakers. Mercedes offers its 4Matic system on a broad range of models, BMW counters with its xDrive system, Volkswagen has 4Motion, and the only Porsche you actually can't get with all-wheel traction is the Boxster/Cayman. But before all its competitors got on board with channeling power to all four wheels, Audi was making a name for itself with its Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
Now 34 years since the advent of the original Audi Quattro, the House of the Four Rings has built its six millionth vehicle equipped with all-wheel drive - only a year and a half since it hit the five-million mark. In fact these days nearly half of all new Audis are ordered in Quattro spec - more than any other automaker - resulting in a total of 710,095 Quattro-equipped Audis produced last year alone.
The landmark 6,000,000th vehicle was an SQ5 in monsoon gray metallic that rolled off the assembly line on Friday and is bound for a customer right here in the United States.

1.6 million. That's how many Q5s Audi has sold since the model's 2008 debut, making the agreeable but stylistically neutral sport-ute the best-selling premium SUV on the planet. One in four Audis sold is a Q5, which is a big part of why the German carmaker made significant improvements intended to ensure the 2018 Audi Q5 is another success story. For starters, the Q5 has swollen in size. Not by much – we're talking 1.3 inches in length, half an inch in wheelbase, and incrementally more height – but enough to boost rear legroom by 0.39 inch and add 0.31 inch to rear headroom. If you're worried that curb weight has bloated in direct proportion to the larger footprint, fear not: The 2018 model is actually up to 198 pounds lighter than the model it replaces, thanks to a carefully modulated blend of high tensile steels and aluminum in the chassis, and incremental weight savings throughout. Two turbocharged engines are available: the Q5's 2.0-liter TFSI engine producing 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque (doing the 0-to-62-mph sprint in 6.4 seconds), and the SQ5's 3.0-liter TFSI mill that turns 354 hp and 369 lb-ft (capable of whisking it to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds). The 2.0-liter meets a new seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, while the beefier 3.0-liter gets a conventional eight-speed torque-converter-equipped gearbox to handle the higher torque. Audi's new Quattro ultra setup (already seen in the A4 and Q7) offers fully variable torque distribution that helps achieve 20/27 mpg with the 2.0-liter and 18/26 mpg for the 3.0-liter. The system can de-couple the rear axle via an electronic clutch, which improves fuel economy; with 100 percent of torque directed to the front wheels during straight-line driving, the parasitic losses of running power needlessly through the rear differential are avoided, while a second clutch controls front/rear torque distribution. Audi says the ultra setup works proactively, not reactively, using torque vectoring to distribute power and anticipating changes in vehicle dynamics 500 milliseconds before the torque is redistributed. While there are numerous tech updates under the skin, the body itself is very familiar. In person, the Q5's looks are tweaked ever-so-slightly thanks primarily to a curvier, crisper character line that is so sharp, it casts its own shadow under certain lighting conditions. Inside, a Q7-like upgrade gives the cabin a more sophisticated feel.

New Transporter 4 Refueled prequel trailer comes with new lead, new Audi S8

Frank Martin returns in a new installment of the franchise that helped make Jason Statham that guy, this one called Transporter 4: Refueled. But ugh, what's happened to all the decent car movies? The problem here isn't that Statham left this series to play the baddie in Fast & Furious 7, but that the trailer makes it appear the director just combined the unused footage from a rap video and a Michael Bay movie, only forgot to include any rappers or input from Michael Bay. The trailer gives no clue as to what the movie's about, but it's not like we don't know – actor Ed Skrein has to take something somewhere while people try to kill him. Skrein does his best (we assume) to fill Statham's large shoes, helped and hindered by the entire line-up of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue, a second reserve alternate Bond villain, gigatons of CGI, and more fireballs than the Milky Way. Oh, and this is a prequel to the series, so just like you did with Darth Maul's double-sided light saber, ignore the extreme newness of Skrein's current generation Audi S8. Related Video:
