Audi Q7 testing gives us clearer view of new look
Wed, 04 Dec 2013Audi just announced its intentions to build the Q1 in 2016. By that time, the company will already have introduced the opposing bookend to that subcompact utility vehicle, the fullsize Q7. The last time we saw the next-gen Audi Q7 out testing, our spy shots were very low quality and didn't reveal much about the luxury SUV. This time around we're able to make out a few key elements about the Q7.
For starters, the unfinished headlights have a stylish, wave-like lighting element with a three-dimensional appearance, while the rear of the Q7 will definitely get a similar wraparound liftgate as the current model. Overall, this prototype looks to be about the same size as the existing Q7, so it will be interesting to see how Audi squeezes almost 800 pounds from the SUV's curb weight. The diet will surely help improve efficiency, and we also hear that Audi is considering a plug-in hybrid model in addition to the standard gas and diesel variants.
Riding on a shared platform with the next-gen Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and the upcoming Bentley Falcon SUV, the next Audi Q7 is expected to bow in late 2014 for the 2015 model year.
Audi scores first CA autonomous car permit
Wed, 17 Sep 2014Audi apparently knows how to get to the front of a line when it comes to driverless vehicles. The German automaker had the honor of being the very first company to receive one of California's new autonomous vehicle driving permits. It was a perfect followup to it being among the earliest ones to get a similar permit in Nevada a few years ago.
Getting the California permit is a big deal for the automaker because the state is also home to Audi's Electronics Research Lab. Among its current projects, Audi is working on the human-machine interface to communicate whether the person or vehicle is actually controlling the driving. All of this hard work is building toward offering autonomous motoring in freeway conditions in the next five years, Audi claims.
Obviously, autonomous vehicles from companies like Google have been testing in California for a while, but the new permits are meant to safeguard public safety when testing the driverless cars in public. The new rules include things like always having a person able to take control and more stringent standards like registering each autonomous car and the eligible drivers with the state. Any models testing on public roads also have to carry at least $5 million in insurance in case of injury, death or property damage.
Audi works on AI with this mini Q2 that can park itself
Mon, Dec 5 2016Audi created a special Q2 that possesses the ability to find parking spaces, drive to them, and park itself. However, you won't be able to ride in it yet, because it's rather small. The Q2 is actually a 1/8-scale electric-powered model of the compact crossover, but the technology inside should eventually scale up. The model features just two mono cameras, one facing forward and the other rearward and 10 ultrasonic sensors around the body. According to Audi, the on-board computer uses information from all of these sources to figure out where the parking space is, and what maneuvers are necessary to enter it. The Q2 uses trial and error to improve how it parks. Audi will explain this Q2 and its artificial intelligence technology at a conference in Barcelona, Spain, this week. According to Audi, the subsidiary that created this model, Audi Electronics Venture, will transfer the tech to a full-size car in the next step of the project. With cars that can parallel park autonomously, and drive semi-autonomously, it's not hard to imagine them piloting themselves through parking lots on their own in the near future.
