Aston Martin to compete at Pikes Peak, with champion Robin Shute aboard
Mon, Feb 6 2023A through technological upgrade is to be performed on an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 race car as part of its preparation to compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June in Colorado, where Rivian and BMW also just announced plans to compete. It will mark the British brand's first entry into the classic Race to the Clouds since the event’s inception in 1916. The driver is expected to be Robin Shute, a three-time overall winner and ‘King of the MountainÂ’ — winning in 2019, 2021 and 2022 when he was also presented with the prestigious Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club for being the first and only British winner of the hill climb. According to the British firm Venture Engineering, which is partnering with Aston Martin Racing, the car will be powered by a 4.0-litrer turbocharged V8 engine, and additional technical developments will include engine mapping; damper work; an upgraded aero and reduced weight package from existing and development parts; as well as bespoke gearing. This year, Venture says, the Aston will be entered in the Time Attack 1 class, which is a division for production-based two- and four-wheel-drive vehicles. There are plans to develop the car further into 2024 for a second run in the Unlimited class, the high-end division for exotics with the least restrictions. Famed for its altitude and unforgiving weather conditions, the Pikes Peak climb is a 12.42-mile test through 156 twisting turns and an elevation gain of 4,725 feet. Â
Aston Martin V12 Speedster will ditch roof and windshield
Wed, Jan 8 2020If your hunger for supercars with no windshields wasn't satiated with the McLaren Elva, we have good news. Aston Martin has one of its own to be revealed later this year. It's simply called the Aston Martin V12 Speedster, and sounds like it will be entertaining. Though the car hasn't been fully revealed, the teaser image gives us a good look at the profile. The nose is pointy with a huge grille like the Aston Martin Vantage. The short deck with tall rear spoiler is also Vantage-esque. Between the wheels appear to be some very aggressive air vents and character lines. And of course, there's no roof or windshield. There are cowls behind the seats, which are fitting since Aston says this car is inspired by the Le Mans-winning 1959 DBR1 race car and the 2013 Aston Martin CC100 concept car, both open sports cars. Powering the V12 Speedster is, obviously, a V12 engine. It's a version of the twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter that's been used in different versions of the DB11. In the Speedster it will produce 690 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which is less than the 715 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque in the monster DBS Superleggera. The engine is matched to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Only 88 V12 Speedsters will be built, and Aston is taking orders now. Completed cars will be delivered in early 2021. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we doubt that will be an issue for those ordering one. Related Video: Â Â
Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate is a little more powerful, different looking
Wed, Jan 18 2023Aston Martin is bringing this iteration of the DBS sports car to a close, so of course it's doing so with one more special edition: the DBS 770 Ultimate. It is one of the most powerful versions of the car, and has a selection of unique features. And like so many other special high-end sports cars, every example has been sold. The headlining feature of the 770 is its extra power. It makes 759 horsepower, 44 more than the standard version, and basically the same as the DBS GT Zagato. Torque remains the same, though. A tweaked intake and ignition system plus 7% more boost pressure is responsible for the extra power. Top speed has not increased, though, sticking to 211 mph. There are other light upgrades both performance-wise and design-wise. Additional vents have been added to the hood and a new splitter added to the front; both modifications are meant to improve cooling. More carbon fiber trim on the outside along with side sills, a diffuser, and unique wheels make it look more aggressive. The steering column has solid mounts for better steering feel. The front end is 25% stiffer than before, and the whole car is stiffer by 3% thanks to a redesigned front subframe and rear undertray. The transmission and adaptive suspension have been retuned, too. But it has the same carbon ceramic brakes and mechanical limited-slip differential as the regular car. The interior gets some attention, too. The standard seats are Sports Plus units with more aggressive ones available. A special strap and buckle have been added to the center console. Of course, the interior and the exterior can be further customized with different colors, materials, graphics and more. As previously mentioned, every DBS 770 Ultimate has already been sold. Only 499 will be built, 300 of which are coupes and 199 are convertibles. Aston didn't give a price, which is understandable when it's not even really on sale in a traditional way. But we're sure each one will go for a fair premium over a standard model. Production starts soon, with deliveries coming in the third quarter of this year. Related video:
