Aston Martin recalling majority of cars built since late 2007 over counterfeit Chinese parts

Back in June 2013, Aston Martin recalled just under 700 vehicles over faulty throttle arms that could break without warning. Bad news, for sure – and things just got a whole lot worse. According to Reuters, the British luxury brand now needs to recall 17,590 vehicles due to counterfeit plastic materials being used by a Chinese sub-supplier – that's roughly 75 percent of the company's output over the same period. Basically, here's how it boils down: with the exception of the Vanquish, Aston Martin will recall all left-hand-drive vehicles built since November 2007, and all right-hand-drive cars built since May 2012. Just as we told you in the recall notice from 2013, the accelerator arms in these cars may fracture, increasing the risk of a crash. Shenzhen Kexiang Mould Tool Co Limited, a Chinese company that molds the accelerator pedal arms in these affected models, was using counterfeit plastics, according to Reuters. These bad plastics were supplied by Synthetic Plastic Raw Material Co Ltd, of Dongguan. An Aston Martin spokesperson tells Reuters that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries in conjunction with this problem.

After last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, Formula 1 entered its annual summer break. It gives teams some (mandatory) time off before the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps. In the meantime, Red Bull Racing has given us a short video showing Daniel Ricciardo racing across America in a Red Bull RB7 (a car he never actually raced). The first video was released yesterday, and it looks like more are on the way. In the video, Ricciardo drives his Red Bull in three of the most scenic locations in the U.S. He starts in San Francisco, driving across the Golden Gate bridge and through the city core before performing a pit stop on the unbelievably empty Bay Bridge that connects San Francisco to Oakland. F1 cars are designed for pristine strips of asphalt, and the car bounces and bobs like an overstuffed beachball on the city's pavement. After California, Ricciardo runs through the middle of Monument Valley, Utah, the location of so many of those classic John Ford-directed westerns. After that, the car shows up on the Las Vegas Strip, with Ricciardo packing up his steering wheel and heading to the casino. The video ends with "to be continued," so stay tuned for more, and enjoy the sounds of the old 2.4-liter Renault V8 (even if it is badged with Aston Martin and Tag Heuer logos). Aston Martin DBX leads a 224% increase in sales for the British brand

LONDON — Carmaker Aston Martin reported on Wednesday a 224% increase in sales to its dealers, boosted by its first sport utility vehicle, the DBX, as losses fell in the first half of the year. The DBX 4x4, which first rolled off the production line just over a year ago, accounted for more than half of its 2,901 vehicles between January and June. "Building on the success of DBX, our first SUV, we have since delivered two more new vehicles and with more exciting product launches to come we are well positioned for growth," said Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll. Fictional agent James Bond's car brand of choice has had a tough time since floating in 2018, as it failed to meet expectations and burnt through cash, prompting it to bring in fresh investment from billionaire Stroll last year. The DBX entered production in July 2020 and has helped the company widen its appeal in a lucrative segment of the market which has proven profitable for its rivals. Its pretax loss fell from 227 million pounds in the first half of 2020 to 91 million pounds ($126 million), with the company saying trading was in line with expectations as it aims for 2021 volumes of around 6,000 vehicles.
