Henrik Fisker presents 'Thunderbolt,' a take on the Aston V12 Vanquish
Sat, Mar 14 2015Henrik Fisker's name no longer even appears on the vehicles from his former brand, but since leaving the company, the man is slowly transitioning back into what made him famous in the first place: design. Fisker has already put pen to paper for a concept motorcycle and a carbon-fiber-bodied Ford Mustang. For his latest project, Fisker has made his unofficial return to Aston Martin to create a one-take on the Vanquish called the Thunderbolt. Debuting its carbon fiber skin at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, Fisker keeps his transformation of the Vanquish far more subdued than his recent work on the Mustang. He enlarges the grille to take up the entire front end but retains Aston Martin's traditional shape, and the hood receives a power dome with triangular air intakes on each side. In profile, this is still clearly an Aston just sharper and leaner. It's also lowered 0.6 inches and rides on 21-inch wheels. A big change comes at the back where Fisker adds wraparound rear glass and transforms the taillights into thin strips of LEDs. The interior offers a mix of high-end leather and more carbon fiber, plus an 11.6-inch Curved Control Screen from Panasonic. Unfortunately, even if you have the means and want to buy this Thunderbolt, it's not for sale. However, Galpin Aston Martin is taking limited orders for a tweaked version with a revised front end that includes different intakes on either side of the grille and without the Panasonic infotainment screen. As designer for the Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage, the Thunderbolt can be thought of as Fisker's return to the British brand, albeit in an unofficial and extremely limited way. Still, it's fascinating to get a glimpse at what the marque's models might look like, if he were still there. Designed by Henrik Fisker as a powerful GT coupe; this is his personal interpretation of how his Aston Martin V12 Vanquish coupe could look like.
Aston Martin find unique way to recycle scraps of leather
Sun, May 15 2016Ever wonder what happens to the scraps of leather left over after skilled craftsmen are done upholstering the interior of a luxury automobile? There's a lot of hide left over, as we've seen first-hand from visiting the upholstery workshops at various factories, but much of the waste is made up of tiny cutoffs. Some of those pieces might be used for repair kits, some scraps for smaller pieces of merchandise, while others might be sold to nearby craftsmen. Aston Martin found a different use for some of its leftovers. The British automaker put down a canvas in the VIP atrium at its headquarters in Gaydon, UK, and equipped a team of artisans with a whole pile of leather samples. What they did with it is perhaps the most compelling example of recycling we've seen to date. The end result, as you can see from this latest video, is an artistic representation of the Vanquish, made entirely out of leather – as if the interior of the luxurious sports car isn't already clad in enough of the stuff. Of course, it doesn't have the Vanquish's 6.0-liter V12 and its 568 horsepower, so unlike most Astons, it won't be going anywhere in a hurry. Perhaps it could be hung in the upholstery workshop for future workers to admire. Related Video:
Aston Martin DBS 770 announced as high-horsepower swan song
Wed, Jan 4 2023Aston Martin will send off the DBS with a limited-edition model called 770 Ultimate. Due out later in 2023, the coupe will stand out from the regular-production model with a more powerful engine, several chassis-related changes, and a handful of edition-specific design details. Aston Martin calls the car "the ultimate finale to a bloodline" and pledges that the coupe will "surpass them all." It adds that the 770 Ultimate will feature a "re-engineered, sharper dynamic focus coupled with exquisite design." That's pretty vague, but there's a big hint potentially hidden in the name: 770 could refer to the engine's output. The DBX 707 uses an evolution of the standard SUV's twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 tuned to develop 707 pferdestarke, which is the German word for metric horsepower that's often abbreviated as PS. Applying this logic to the 770 Ultimate strongly suggests the model will gain a 770-pferdestarke version of the twin-turbocharged, 5.2-liter V12 that powers the standard DBS. That number converts to about 759 horsepower. In comparison, the DBS puts 715 horsepower under the driver's right foot. That's enough for a 3.3-second sprint from zero to 60 mph. We're guessing that the Ultimate will retain an eight-speed automatic transmission, and suspension modifications should give it sharper handling. Aston Martin will release additional details about the DBS 770 Ultimate in the coming weeks, and the model is scheduled to make its debut in early 2023 — a specific date hasn't been published yet. Production will be limited to 499 units globally, and we expect a base price of well over $300,000. As for what's next, your guess is as good as ours: Aston Martin hasn't announced whether it will replace the DBS. Related Video:
