First Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation complete
Mon, Jul 6 2020Two years ago, Aston Martin announced a run of 25 DB5 Continuation cars that would be track-only reproductions of the gadget-laden DB5 from the James Bond movie "Goldfinger." A long gestation involved collaborating with Bond production house Eon Productions and longtime Bond stunt coordinator Chris Corbould on gadget reproductions. About six weeks ago the English luxury maker announced it had begun building the first DB5 from scratch and by hand, mainly using the same techniques that went into creating the original DB5, saying each car would need about 4,500 man-hours to fabricate. Today we have the first fruit from Aston Martin's Heritage Division workshop in Newport Pagnell, England. All trickery is accounted for with the show car, including recoiling machine gun barrels that erupt from behind the headlights, front and rear bumper battering rams, tire slashers, revolving triple license plates, rear smoke screen and oil spray systems, a bulletproof shield rising from the decklid, telephone in the driver's door, center console radar screen, weapons tray under the seats, an ejector seat button under the shift knob to send ornery passengers through the partial sunroof, and a remote control to work Q Branch's driver safety features when away from the leather-wrapped seats. Anything deadly only simulates genuine operation, naturally. But the smokescreen works and the oil delivery system sprays real fluid, so we see some hot-lap mishaps and cleanups at Turn 4 in some track's future. The first DB5 built in 55 years comes with a 4.0-liter straight-six sprouting three SU carburetors, shooting 290 horsepower to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Deliveries are certain to begin soon, each of the 25 examples starting at GBP2.7 million (about $3.4M U.S.). That's real money, sure, but a half-off bargain compared to the $6.4M paid for the 1964 DB5 used in the movie. Related Video:
More V12 power, no turbos | 2017 Aston Martin Vanquish S First Drive
Wed, Jan 4 2017Like the last days of the dinosaurs, Aston Martin's $294,950 Vanquish S is one of a handful of extant Tyrannosaurus Rex – few big-capacity naturally aspirated engines still bellow rage at the world in general. So, six liters, twelve cylinders, 48 valves, and no turbos; hurrah. Well, as long as you're not buying the gas. As the delivery driver who brought this car to me observed: "Whatever I seem to do with this car, it never gives more than 14.5 mpg, where as long as you barely touch the throttle, the new DB11 gives you about 18." Aston's DB11, which debuted this year with a fresh chassis/powertrain architecture that will eventually underpin a new car with the Vanquish nameplate, is twin-turbocharged. The Vanquish S, with its extra power, is decidedly not. It's the off-duty moments that stymie gas mileage for naturally aspirated mills like the one in this car. Dragging that huge crank, con rods, pistons, and cams around plays havoc on economy when you aren't on it like jam on toast. At full throttle, there's not a lot in it, turbo or no turbo. The Vanquish is the most unlikely car ever to have almost not made it into production. The name was first used in 2001 attached to Ian Callum's toothsome aluminum/carbon composite coupe body, but then chief executive Uli Bez held it back for six months, officially because he didn't like the Ford Ka air vents. Unofficially, as he later admitted: "What no one wanted to hear at the time is that Vanquish was crap. I changed 200 things, and even then, it burned through gearboxes." At the heart of the Vanquish then and now is a V12 engine, effectively built out of two Ford Mondeo Cleveland V6 units. It's easy to scoff at such humble beginnings, but the rumor machine elicits Porsche and Cosworth involvement in its gestation. First introduced in the 1999 DB7 V12 Vantage, the engine was then tuned to 460 horsepower for the 2001 Vanquish, which also debuted Aston's bonded-and-riveted VH platform chassis. Over 2,500 of these amazing cars were sold in standard and (from 2004) S forms, though its robotized manual transmission was problematic.
The Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante is a beautiful mouthful
Tue, Jul 25 2017Aston Martin makes some of the most beautiful sportscars in the world. There are few bad looking Astons and most attempts to modify or change the cars' characters usually ends terribly. Zagato, the Milan-based coachbuilder, is one of the few companies that seems to get it right. Last year, the company debuted its Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato coupe and Vanquish Zagato Volante convertible. These new spy shots show the production car in action. As the name suggests, the Vanquish Zagato Volante is simply a Aston Martin Vanquish Volante restyled by Zagato. That means a 5.9-liter V12 sending 592 horsepower to the rear wheels. Expect a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. That's nearly as quick as the new Aston Martin DB11. The Vanquish Zagato Volante keeps the standard car's long-hood short-deck proportions, but most of the bodywork has been redone. The grille keeps the standard Aston Martin outline, but it grows in size and bubbles out just slightly. Round LED lights sit at the corners of the Z-emblazoned grille. Around the side, we can see the gold-accented wheels and fender. There is a deep cut for airflow just behind the rear wheel. The shape mimics that of the standard car, but changes it just enough to make it special. A carbon-fiber lip runs around the bottom of the entire car. Out back, the wing-shaped taillights have been replaced with round units that use bladelike LEDs. The quad exhaust tips remain in place, but they appear to sit slightly higher than on the standard car. The small rear wing raises and lowers at speed for increased downforce. Just 99 of these Vanquish Zagato Volantes will be built. Most are likely spoken for, going to owners of the coupe version of the car. After all, if you have one, you might as well have the set.
