1969 Alfa Romeo Boat Tail Spider Project on 2040-cars
Tarrytown, New York, United States
| This Spider underwent a complete professional metal restoration, including the floors and rockers.  The body was stripped/prepped, and the doors, hood, trunk lid, and dash removed before painting in a spray boot seven years ago.  The only part left unpainted is the undercarriage, which is in epoxy primer.  The car has been stored in a dry, heated garage ever since it was brought home from the body shop.  Not much has been done to it other than installing the bumpers, some lights and the dash. Although the most difficulty work was painstakingly done, the car still needs a soft top, and  brake, mechanical, suspension and interior work.  As such, it may be of interest to those who prefer avoiding the time and expense of bringing a Duetto's body shell back to its original glory. The drive train has 78,564 miles.  The engine turns freely by hand or with the starter if you apply 12 volts to the solenoid. The only parts missing include the exhaust system (front, center and rear muffler), the exhaust shield under the car, the metal shields for the clutch MC and brake MC, the metal brake lines to the rear proportioning valve and rear right caliper, the radiator plastic shroud, the factory tool kit, the soft top, and the interior rubber mats and carpeting. The following parts have been media blasted and primed or painted:  front A-arms, rear trailing arms, front splash shields, heater box metal pieces, head light buckets, drive shafts, pedal assembly, and all the soft top frame pieces. New front A-arms and rear trailing arms bushing were installed along with new OEM front springs pans and rear axle limiting straps. The drive shafts received new u-joints and center bearing support. A new windshield made in England and a new windshield rubber gasket is included in the sale price.  It is probably best to install these after taking care of the few cracks on the upper dashboard. Please note that the New York State DMV does not issue titles for 1972 and older vehicles.  This Alfa Romeo will be sold with a certification of sale. I would prefer a cash transaction but can accept a check.  However, you will have to wait until the balance shows in my account before you gain possession of the vehicle. I encourage any potential buyer to come see the car. I kindly ask those who showed interest in this car in the past but were unable to finalize its purchase to find another project. |

It's the Alfa Romeo Brennero after all
Thu, Dec 7 2023In an "X-Files" television episode called "Teliko," the show changed its usual tagline during the title sequence from "The truth is out there" to "Deceive, Inveigle, Obfuscate." Both taglines would apply to the mystery around the name of Alfa Romeo's coming subcompact SUV. For the longest while, based on information from unnamed sources, the urban runabout twinned with Europe's Jeep Avenger was expected to be named the Alfa Romeo Brennero, honoring Italy's Brennero Pass (Brenner Pass in English). Then automaker design head Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos said something to Autocar over the summer that led Autocar to write, "that name was ruled out by Mesonero-Romanos." Autocar didn't quote the designer's words used to dismiss the expected name, it only quoted what came next, Mesonero-Romanos saying, "The model name is now decided. it will be Italian and it will be beautiful. But more than that, I cannot say for now." Maybe we’ve known it all along.#AlfaRomeo pic.twitter.com/dE10xGYXwO — Alfa Romeo (@alfa_romeo) December 6, 2023 The decided, Italian, beautiful name is Brennero. That's what we get from an automaker post on X bearing the caption, "Maybe we've known it all along," and a 15-second animation flashing four GPS coordinates. One coordinate picks out Alfa RomeoÂ’s history museum, the Museo Storico, another the Balocco Proving Grounds, another the Stelvio Pass, and finally, the Brennero Pass. This post could be considered Alfa answering its own question from June of this year — a month before Mesonero-Romano's supposed denial — with the caption, "A game-changing #SportyUrbanVehicle is on the horizon. What will be the name of our new Alfa Romeo? Take a guess in the comments below." Speculation has gathered around a few hard points. The Brennero sits on the CMP/e-CMP platform utilized by the Avenger, the Fiat 600, the Peugeot 2008, and the DS 3 Crossback. In electric form, it fits the Avenger's 54-kWh battery and front axle e-motor making the same 154 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque, and will likely get around the same 248 miles on a charge on the WLTP cycle. As the new entry-level offering beneath the Tonale, if the Brennero adopts Avenger dimensions, the Brennero will be about 16 inches shorter than the Tonale, its roof about three inches lower. More speculative speculation supposes there could be a dual-motor all-wheel-drive Brennero evolved from the drivetrain in the Avenger 4x4 Concept.

Alfa Romeo Tonale drops the non-hybrid 2.0-liter for the U.S.
Mon, Nov 21 2022Until last week, we were expecting the Alfa Romeo Tonale to be sold with two powertrains here. When the compact crossover greeted the world for the first time in February, Alfa Romeo told us our market could expect a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the base option, putting out 256 horsepower through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels. The premium choice would be a plug-in hybrid powertrain that paired a 177-hp, 1.3-liter four-cylinder turning the front axle with a 121-hp electric motor working the rear axle for a combined 275 hp. The PHEV would also be capable of 30 miles of pure-electric motoring in the U.S. Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Philippe Imparato told Automotive News Europe during the media drive that the non-hybrid 2.0-liter is no longer an option for the U.S. because Alfa Romeo needs to go especially aggressive on reducing emissions here. In Europe, the Tonale can be ordered with both powertrains as well as a diesel. Here, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently proposed a new set of regulations that lay out tougher benchmarks for an automaker's CO2 emissions. If the regulations pass, 35% of an automaker's sales in the state will need to be zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV) by 2026 and 100% by 2035. California, by itself, is on the cusp of passing Germany as the world's fourth-largest economy, according to Bloomberg. Furthermore, 13 states and the District of Columbia adhere to CARB emissions rules, nine of those follow California's ZEV program, and three more states will join the ZEV regulations over the next three years. Alfa Romeo sold just over 18,000 cars here last year, and it needs plenty of Tonales to offset all those Stelvios. Across the Atlantic, the Euro 7 emissions giving carmakers public fits are slated to come into force on July 1, 2025. For these reasons as well as Alfa Romeo's commitment to going all-electric this decade, Imperato told ANE the PHEV is "an existential need" in the lineup. An Alfa Romeo spokesperson in the U.S. elaborated to Car and Driver, "As a premium brand, the PHEV better aligns with what our customers want in this segment as it provides an elevated experience, greater performance, and more than 30 miles of electric range." The subtext here is that the Tonale's corporate twin, the Dodge Hornet, will offer both powertrains when it goes on sale next year.
