1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Normale, red with black interior. Complete short-wheelbase car, original engine and trans, off the road 40 years, never restored, basically sound, needs restoration. Last of the pure 750 tunnel-case Spiders, after the summer break the cars began to morph into 101s with split case trans, etc. Alfa reports: "According to our documentation files, the chassis number AR 1495.04151 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, manufactured on the 26th July 1958 and sold on the 1st August 1958 to Hoffman Motor Car Co., New York, U.S.A. I bought this as a parts/restoration car in 2012 to support another 750 Spider. Seven Alfas is proving to be too many, and something's go to go. Detailed descriptions below, and happy to answer questions, provide more info. Phones 510 526-0391 h, 510 684-2350 c. Car is in Berkeley, CA, in-person inspections encouraged so you know what you're getting, not relying on my assessment. History: See above, sold new in Belmont, CA at Howard Motors, likely in the Bay Area since new. One owner til early 1980s, engine ran out of oil in 1975 and it sat unused til sold to original owners' friend in 1981, then to me in 2012. I have the original bill of sale and old registrations, was "junked" in 1981 and plates turned in to DMV. I have no current paperwork and no plates. Sat covered from 1981 to 2012, inside since bought it. Body: SWB 750 Spider, originally red, repainted once, now paint is old and tired. Nose has been hit, fixed with bondo, not very well. Amazingly minimal rust; body is sound, slight bubbles in rockers, floors all good, trunk floor has one small tear at left gas tank hanger, some corrosion below battery but no holes. Some bubbles along bottom of trunklid. All body panels look original. VIN clearly stamped on firewall, data plate on hood matches. Bumpers present but have some dents and rust. Glass good, trim present if not all installed. Grill poor. Top included, canvas poor, drape included, needs stitching. Missing clamp for spare tire, no jack. Interior: Original red carpets present, rubber mats gone. Seats are originals from a 58 Veloce, never recovered. Tracks on driver's side are torn, per normal, but pans are good. All tracks present. Top drape, door panels, rear area panels all present and original. All door hardware present. Dash good, gauges present, tri-gauge came from another car, missing bezel. Original locks and keys. One or two switches missing. Includes radio blank plate, mirror good. Steering wheel complete, has one or two rim cracks. Engine, trans: Original 750 Normale engine 1315.43718 present, matches data plate. Ran out of oil in 1975, one bad bearing, not sure what else, I have not torn open. Engine complete except for 1-4 exhaust piece, which was broken. Includes air cleaner, Lucas generator and starter, and 750 fuel pump. Water pump lacks fan. I sourced a new rod, but engine likely needs full rebuild. Original tunnel-case transmission is included, with correct shifter, boots, and knob. Driveshaft all present. Floor was never cut up for a later split-case transmission. Exhaust sytem present. Radiator, trans mount and cross member etc out of car but included. Running gear, brakes: All suspension and steering intact. Has five Fergat wheels from a later 1958 Spider, good older Sears tires to tow on. Brakes all present, LR was taken apart but I reassembled. Rolls fine. Diff intact, condition unknown. Electrical, other. Electrical system is all there, plenty of wires are not great after 40 years' sitting. Assume new harness is needed. Front headlights are installed but cobbled, taillights are good, missing one bezel. Inspection, papers, contact. As above, I have no current paperwork, but original sales receipt and old DMV forms, and bills of sale from original owner, to second, to me. No plates. Inspections strongly encouraged. This is a very solid 750D to restore, but clearly is a big project and I'd like you to judge for yourself. Call 510 526-0391 to arrange to inspect, happy to tell you anything you want to know, photograph, etc. Contact through ebay to get more pics, and I can tell you by phone the AlfaBB thread on this car. |

2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale starts just under $45,000
Wed, Jan 18 2023The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be hitting dealers very soon, so Alfa has opened up the order books and announced pricing for the plug-in hybrid SUV. The base Sprint model will start at $44,590 including destination charge. That's a good bit more than some competitors such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, but they're less powerful, don't come standard with all-wheel-drive, and aren't plug-in hybrids at those entry prices. When those are equipped with similar power and all-wheel-drive, the Alfa ends up being priced very close to its rivals. Full standard features weren't given for each trim level, but we know that the Tonale gets the turbo 1.3-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain making 285 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. It has an electric range of around 30 miles and standard all-wheel drive. A 10.25-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster are also included along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Despite a lack of detailed features for each trim, base prices for each have been released, and they're listed below. Sprint: $44,590 Ti: $46,590 Veloce: $49,090 Alfa Romeo is taking pre-orders for the Tonale right now, but only for the higher Ti and Veloce trim levels. Orders for the base Sprint will open up later this quarter. Alfa also expects that the Tonale will qualify for a $7,500 tax credit when leasing, due to a loophole for vehicles under lease. But be sure to double-check all those details before finalizing a purchase.
Alfa Romeo 4C Spider brings roofless Italian performance to the well-heeled masses
Mon, Jan 12 2015Following through on its Geneva concept and year-end rumors, Alfa Romeo has introduced a roofless version of its mid-engine 4C at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Like the Lotus Elise, the canvas top on the 4C Spider isn't some fancy automatic roof. Instead, owners will need to manually sort things out. Unlike the Elise, at least, the 4C's top is easier to manage when both fixing and removing from the mid-engined sports car's body. For those that prefer the security provided by a hard top, a removable carbon-fiber roof will be added after launch. Aside from that change, most of the tweaks for the 4C Spider have to do with options and equipment. As we explained in our original post, opting for the topless version of this turbocharged Italian will still get you to 60 in just 4.1 seconds, while Alfa claims the 4C Spider can still pull 1.1 lateral g. Check out our full gallery of photos of the new 4C Spider, direct from the floor of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, at the top of the page. And for more on Alfa's second US product, check out our original post, right here.
Listen to the 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio's howling Ferrari V6
Fri, Oct 18 2019There's a lot that makes the 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio special, from its name to its handling. But arguably its biggest claim to fame is the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 under the hood that was derived from a Ferrari engine. It makes 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, and all that grunt goes through an eight-speed automatic transmission on its way to the rear wheels. Being a Ferrari-related engine, it has a suitably impressive exhaust note. Pop it into "Dynamic" mode, and the exhaust opens up. It's plenty loud with higher revs, but quiets down on the highway, avoiding much drone. The note is unique, with a deeper tone than you might expect from the Prancing Horse brand. It also has rippling crackles that occur more naturally than some of its consistently popping competitors from Germany. Take a listen for yourself with the video above.
