Honda planning sub-NSX S2000 successor
Tue, 13 May 2014Nine years separated the arrival of the original Acura NSX and the Honda S2000. By that time, the NSX was closer to the end of its fifteen-year production cycle than it was to its beginning. The latest word has it that not only is Honda planning a successor to the S2000, but it's not about to wait that long after the new NSX arrives before it's rolled out.
While the S2000 was a front-mid-engined roadster, its successor will, according to the latest from Auto Express (which we are taking with a grain of salt), be a mid-engined coupe - closer, in other words, to the NSX than the S2000. Power would come from a more potent version of the 2.0-liter turbo four developed for the upcoming new Civic Type R, possibly as part of a hybrid system derived from Honda's upcoming Formula One powertain to develop over 400 horsepower.
Whether the new sports car would revive the S2000 nameplate, and whether it would wear the Honda or Acura badge in the United States, remain to be seen. As does its potential production site: while the previous S2000 was built at the same Takanezawa plant in Tochigi as the original NSX, the new NSX will be built at the new Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. The new S660 roadster, meanwhile, is set to be assembled at the same Yachiyo plant in Yokkaichi as the original Honda Beat.
2024 Acura RDX is another model dropping front-wheel drive
Fri, Nov 10 2023After Acura made small changes to the RDX for the 2022 and 2023 model years, Honda's premium arm is carrying the 2023 version nearly unchanged into 2024. There's a familiar drivetrain tweak that we've covered across the automaker spectrum, though, with Acura dropping the front-wheel-drive option that had been available on the base, Technology, and A-Spec trims. For now, every RDX comes fitted with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The effect is also familiar: Compared to 2023 RDX pricing at launch, the minimum price for the entry-level base and the Technology trims is up $2,300, the A-Spec price climbs $2,000. MSRPs for the RDX lineup including the $1,195 destination charge, and their changes from 2023 launch pricing, are: RDX Base: $45,245 ($2,300) Technology: $47,895 ($2,300) A-Spec: $50,895 ($2,000) Advance: $53,045 ($500) A-Spec Advance: $55,045 ($500) Now for the small print. We specified launch pricing because the 2023 RDX has already gone up in price by all but $100 of the increases noted above. Meaning, if you wanted to configure a 2023 RDX on Acura's website instead of a 2024, you'd only save $100. Also, the automaker didn't put out a press release for the coming model year, but it did publish a fact sheet. The first footnote of the fact sheet explains, "Destination & Handling charge for sedans (excluding PMC Edition) and SUVs (excluding PMC Edition) is $1,400." At the time of writing this post, destination charges are still shown as $1,195 on the 2024 Acura RDX Build & Price page. Take this as warning that the brand's cars could get at least $205 more expensive soon. Every RDX is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, shifting through a 10-speed automatic and sending power to both axles. We've had nothing bad to say about the RDX, praising its gutsy engine, responsive chassis, quality interior, sharp styling, spacious interior and plentiful standard features. And even with the price bumps, the RDX remains either much less expensive or notably more powerful than the luxury competitors Acura wants to challenge with the RDX.
2023 Acura Integra production begins in Ohio
Fri, May 6 2022Acura has launched production of the 2023 Integra. The sedan is built in Marysville, Ohio, meaning it's made in America for the first time. Carmakers launch production of new models on a regular basis, it's what keeps our industry going, but Acura explained that preparing the Marysville plant and its staff to build the Integra was easier said than done. While the hatchback was unveiled online in March 2022, preparations started much earlier, and Acura had to juggle various COVID-related setbacks and restrictions in order to meet its deadline. The company explained that its production team relied on video-conference tools set up in the plant to stream trial production live, for example. They made design changes remotely, and Acura went as far as setting up a virtual teaching system to train its workers. Everything went according to plan, and the born-again Integra has started rolling off the line. It's built on the same assembly line as the bigger TLX. Acura dealers across the nation will begin receiving the 2023 Integra in June 2022. Pricing starts at $31,895 including a $1,095 destination charge. Interestingly, the base model and the mid-range A-Spec trim are exclusively offered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT); the only way to get a six-speed manual transmission is to select the range-topping A-Spec with Technology Package trim priced at $36,895. Regardless of trim, power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. Related video:
