2024 Acura Integra Type S costs $51,995, orders open May 11

The highly anticipated 2024 Acura Integra Type S will start at $51,995 (including $1,195 for destination) and preorders will open up on May 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. Pacific. Now, before you get too excited, know that Acura is only planning to take reservations for "one of the first 200 production units before the high-performance model officially begins arriving at dealerships next month." We'd expect those 200 slots to fill awfully quickly. For those interested in throwing their hats into the virtual ring, the orders will be accepted at Acura.com/Integra. Deliveries to dealerships are planned for June. As we already knew, the Integra Type S will gain a total of 5 horsepower over the mechanically related Honda Civic Type R, though we're not clear on what's changed between the two versions of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant to account for those newly located ponies. A six-speed manual transmission is mandatory, no automatic will be offered. The Type S will benefit from the same dual-axis front suspension design that inhibits torque steer so well in the Type R. Acura also revealed that the Type S will achieve fuel economy figures of 21 miles per gallon in the city, 28 on the highway and 24 combined. That's down one mpg in the city compared to the Civic Type R, but the rest match up. Now, it is of course worth pointing out that the latest Honda Civic Type R is an excellent car. We not only named it an Editor's Pick, we declared it victorious in a comparison test with its most natural rival, the Toyota GR Corolla (a car that we also like quit a bit). That Honda, which shares a whole host of parts with this new Acura Integra Type S, costs $44,890 (again, including destination). Performance cars overpower the Detroit Auto Show

At precisely the stroke of noon on Monday, the 2016 Acura NSX rolled on stage at the Detroit Auto Show amid plumes of smoke and dancing lights. The sounds of the powerful engine revving soared to the rafters. It was the second coming of Acura's iconic sports car, and the reveal had all of the expected trappings. Afterwards, champagne corks popped and the bubbly flowed. It was noon in Detroit, but for the green-car movement, it seemed like the clock had struck midnight. That's an exaggeration, but performance was the overwhelming theme of North America's most important show. Ford – which has helped lead the way in smaller displacement engines and early adoption of hybrid powertrains – had more than 1,500 horsepower on stage one point after it revealed the GT concept, the new F-150 Raptor and the Shelby Mustang GT350R. The NSX is technically a hybrid (it has three electric motors), but with 550-plus hp, there's no doubt this Acura was bred on the track. The theme continued throughout the show at nearly every stand. Alfa Romeo showed off the 4C Spider, which is the open-air version of a car that purports to be the spiritual successor of the high-performance 33 Stradale from 1967. On Tuesday, Cadillac is scheduled to reveal the 640-hp CTS-V with the V8 transplanted from the Corvette Z06, and the Lexus was expected to roll out its own V8-powered beast, the 467-hp GS F. For enthusiasts – especially enthusiasts with money – these are halcyon days. But make no mistake, all of this power has a purpose. Ford product chief Raj Nair said the Blue Oval uses high performance cars to develop technologies, like aerodynamics and materials, which are then shared across its lineup. "It's another proof point about how serious we are in developing innovation through performance," he said. Ford, which is rolling out at least 12 performance cars by 2020, said the sporty cars attract younger and more influential buyers to its fold, which can help burnish its image beyond adding sales volume. Toyota is taking a similar approach, senior vice president Bob Carter said, noting the Lexus RC coupe draws people into showrooms and gets them excited about the brand, even if they don't end up buying one. "They provide an aspiration and a halo that provides the attention that gets you noticed in a cluttered market," he said.

Acura teases tougher looking 2017 MDX for New York

Acura is teasing its redesigned 2017 MDX with this orange-tinged rendering ahead of the three-row SUV's reveal at the 2016 New York Auto Show on March 23. The luxury automaker promises big changes for the latest model, including "substantial design enhancements, added luxury comfort and convenience features, and advanced new powertrain technology." Unfortunately, the company doesn't offer further details about those general promises. The folks at the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA, have much bolder styling ready for the 2017 MDX. While these lines aren't as razor-sharp as the Acura Precision Concept from the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, this SUV subtly evokes the sedan's honed look. For example, the chiseled shapes around the hood and grille are crisp, and the front and rear fenders are highly sculpted, which gives the MDX a tough demeanor. This teaser image makes the lower fascia appear a little busy because there's so much happening down there, but we're withholding judgment until the real thing debuts. We're also curious about the additional powertrain advancements Acura promises because the automaker just updated the MDX last year with its nine-speed automatic gearbox and twin-clutch Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The company also added expanded availability of its AcuraWatch active safety suite to the 2016 model.
