The Acura Integra is coming back, but what exactly will it be?

Fri, Aug 13 2021

Yep, the Acura Integra is back! Acura has offered limited information about the revival of its compact nameplate, and while we suspect it will replace the ILX outright when it debuts in 2022, Honda's luxury subsidiary has yet to cough up any more useful information. That's fine; it means we can fill the void with baseless speculation educated guesses as to what form the next-generation Integra will take.  While we're all excited about its resurrection, Autoblog is not a hive mind, and each of us has a different idea of what a new Integra could (or should) be. Here are our takes, for whatever they're worth, which could easily be absolutely nothing.  Associate Editor Byron Hurd: Yes, that's a photo of a CR-Z model at Honda's design studio. Bear with me here; I promise I'm going somewhere with this. Frankly, as cool as it would be to see Acura take the fight to the likes of the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, I can't help but look at the (lack of) success of the ILX and wonder whether there's any hope for something so formulaic.  While I'm sure this will offend at least a few "purists," I'd love to see Honda leverage whatever equity the Integra nameplate has left to pivot its more mainstream cars toward electrification. Sure, an all-wheel-drive take on a Civic Si or Type-R sounds really cool, but how about an accessible fastback coupe or sedan with a scaled-down version of the NSX's powertrain, flipped front-to-back? Base it on a smaller (turbocharged?) ICE, stick the electrified axle in the rear, and voila. Ford has proven that hybrids don't have to be expensive; heck, even the CR-Z was cheap back in the day.  As bothersome as this idea may seem to the faithful, consider this: The ILX wasn't a bust because it was called "ILX." Small sedans just aren't worthwhile investments for automakers right now, so as abhorrent as hybridization or electrification may seem, the alternative could very well be a subtle crossoverification of the Integra nameplate. Does that sound more appealing? Because I sure don't think so.  News Editor Joel Stocksdale: So, just as was the case with the Integra and even the ILX, I have no doubt the new Integra will be based on the Honda Civic. And I think that will probably be a very good thing. The new 11th-generation Civic seems to be as good if not better than the outgoing one, so add some nicer interior pieces and some sound-deadening, and it should be a great, roomy entry-level luxury alternative.

Acura's GM-based electric crossover may be called ADX

Wed, Dec 29 2021

Acura's version of Honda's General Motors-based electric crossover will inaugurate the ADX nameplate, according to a recent report. While nothing is official, the United States Patent and Trademark Office recently granted the Japanese company the rights to the name. Spotted by Car & Driver, the trademark application was filed by Honda on December 22, 2021, and approved three days later. Nothing suggests it's for a Honda, but a model called ADX would slot neatly into the Acura range, which also includes the MDX and the RDX. The filing asks more questions than it answers. What's an Acura ADX? One possibility is that the nameplate might appear on Acura's version of the Honda Prologue, which is due out for the 2024 model year. It will be based on a GM-designed platform, and it will be powered by the same Ultium battery technology found under the Cadillac Lyriq, among other EVs. We know it will spawn an Acura, too. It's important to note that nothing in the filing mentions an electric powertrain. Acura's range only includes two crossovers, which is far below the industry average (Lexus has five crossovers and SUVs; even Lincoln has four) so the ADX name could end up on a non-electric addition to the range. The line-up could grow in a number of directions and many of its dealers are asking for bigger and small people-movers. As we've said before, a patent or a trademark filing is not a guarantee that a feature or a nameplate will see the light that awaits at the end of a production line. Carmakers routinely protect their intellectual property to ensure that it doesn't end up in the hands of a rival. Although there's no such thing as an Acura ADX — at least not yet — the name falls in line with the company's naming system. Imagine the confusion that would ensue if, say, Lexus released a crossover called ADX that was aimed directly at the 355-horsepower Acura MDX Type S. Acura hasn't commented on the report, and it hasn't revealed what its Honda and General Motors-derived model will be called. Related video:

2014 Acura RLX replaces SH-AWD with P-AWS

Wed, 28 Nov 2012

After teasing us with the thinly veiled concept earlier this year, Acura has officially taken the wraps off its all-new flagship sedan, the 2014 Acura RLX. Aside from its huge step forward in terms of styling and luxury, the new RLX could very well be the most advanced Acura model ever.
While the previous RL could have been one of the blandest luxury sedans of its time, the RLX builds on stylish cues introduced this year on the ILX and RDX. One of the car's signature elements is its jewel-eyed LED headlights that could end up rivaling Audi for the most distinctive in the business. The rear view of the car isn't as unique as the front, but no less attractive with LED taillights that have a slight BMW vibe and odd, chrome-ringed reflectors at the bottom of the fascia. The interior is exactly what we've come to expect from Acura with its dual-brow instrument panel and a sporty three-spoke steering wheel.
On the technology front, the RLX debuts driving features such as Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS), Adaptive Cruise Control with a low-speed follow feature and Agile Handling Assist while the interior gets a high-end Krell audio system, cloud-based AcuraLink and a multi-angle back camera. P-AWS allows the RLX actively and independently adjust the angle of the rear wheels for better agility and braking. Acura ended up cutting almost 275 pounds from the RLX's curb weight (compared to the RL) thanks to the use of high-strength steel and aluminum.

DESCRIPTION
From concept to reality, the Acura NSX spent seven dedicated years on the tracks to refine it to its peak level of performance before offered to the public. With Honda’s engineering team instructed to use whatever means necessary to create a car that was both reliable enough for both street & track use, but also exceeded the performance and design qualities of any performance sports car coming out of Europe. They utilized their connection to the Formula 1 racing circuit thoroughly with driver incite from Japan’s Satoru Nakajima, 3-time world Champion Ayrton Senna from Brazil, and America’s Bobby Rahal to tune the chassis rigidity, and road handling characteristics, to be second to none! It debuted in 1991 using the Acura nameplate in the USA and became Automobile magazine’s Car of the Year!

A great deal of the car’s success lies in the lightweight design. It was the first production car to utilize an all-aluminum, ultra light monocoque body, ultra rigid aluminum alloy frame, and aluminum suspension components. This all aiding in shedding unnecessary pounds, increasing overall chassis rigidity, and improving handling! By 1997, improvements came about with a better 6-speed transmission, bigger brakes, more horsepower & torque from a larger displacement engine, better rear end gear ratio, and improvements to weight and body rigidity!

We are very excited to offer this exceptionally rare 1999 Acura NSX Coupe (#180) finished in striking Spa Yellow over Black leather interior! This car comes to us with only 51,025 original miles! Powered by the robust, high-revving 3.2L VTEC engine with variable valve timing, titanium connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons producing a stout 290 horsepower built with an incredible 8,000 rpm redline! Options include 6-speed manual transmission, automatic climate control, Bose audio system, tilt/telescopic steering column, dual power seats, power windows & mirrors, power locks, cruise control, full dash instrumentation, and upgraded 16” front & 17” rear 7-spoke, chrome light alloy wheels! Honda nailed their intentions to manufacture a reliable supercar! History has already proven these cars to be as carefree with maintenance equaling a modern day Honda Accord!

This wonderfully cared for example delivered new to San Diego, CA where it stayed the great majority of its life. It made its way to Florida in 2008 when it was purchased by its 3rd owner. It has been properly serviced from day one staying with the original Acura dealership that ordered it through 2005. Used primarily as a marketing tool, it was showcased at southern California race tracks to promote Acura cars and draw crowds to a dealer sbowcase. What makes this example uniquely special is that only 221 NSX’s were manufactured in 1999 making it one of the lowest production years during production. Of those 221 cars, only 35 were Spa Yellow! Moreover, only 4 total units were produced in the lighter, fixed-roof-coupe design, all of which had the 6-speed manual transmission. Only 1 Spa Yellow coupe was made in 1999, and this is it! An extremely rare investment is the sports car market today! Although involved in an accident while still under Acura MSO in 2002 that damaged the driver rear quarter panel, it was deemed salvage by the insurance company & dealership since it could no longer be sold as a new automobile. The repairs were professionally completed by the dealership auto body shop, and later sold privately in 2005 to its first registered owner.

It has been upgraded with a ComTech stainless steel performance exhaust system with 3” exhaust tips. The exhaust note is racy with a perfect, throaty pitch! The only other upgrade would be the cross-drilled brake rotors with new brake pads. The tires were replaced just 3,000 miles ago with BF Goodrich G-Force ZR-rated tires. The battery and the oil/filter are brand new. It will come with all books/manuals. It remains in outstanding driving condition, amazingly quick, and incredibly easy to drive! For those collectors looking for a fast, agile sports car without the maintenance headaches, look no further!!
