Up for sale today is my wife's XC90 wagon. The details:

Make: Volvo
Model: XC90
Trim: T6 (Top of the line)
Drivetrain: 260hp twin turbo inline 6, all wheel drive
Exterior Color: Silver
Interior Color: Black
Miles: 93,667 (will go up slightly)

This particular one has a bunch of features and a few extras I added.

Auto Leveling Suspension - The rear suspension auto-levels for loads. It's completely mechanical so there's no air compressor. The shocks just pump up to a predetermined level after a couple minutes of driving. So you can put 1000lbs in the back and it will ride at normal height.

Moonroof

Rain-Sensing Wipers

Motorized retractable side mirrors

Rear Audio & Climate Controls

Headlight Washers (yeah!)

Full Leather Interior

Retractable 3rd row - Folds entirely into floor and forms the trunk floor.

Premium Audio - Pro-Logic surround, center speaker, etc

Safety - If you have a family seriously nothing beats this... Even by today's standards the XC90 is ridiculously safe which was the main reason we bought it. The roof pillars are made of boron which is apparently super strong. How strong? Go on Youtube and search for "XC90 rollover test".

Then there's a few extras:

Remote Start

Auxiliary in Jack - The XC90's have no bluetooth or auxiliary in from the factory so the only option is to use an FM modulator or a $500 adapter that goes into the cars fiber optic ring.  Sticklers for audio quality we chose the latter so the truck has the Dension Gateway 500 installed in it.  Currently there's a 1/8th" headphone jack coming out of the center console so it will work with just about anything.  For $50 - $100 you can get a bluetooth adapter that will plug into the Gateway and give you bluetooth audio streaming as well as the ability to do bluetooth calls (if you add an inexpensive mic).  If you buy the car and you pay for the items I'm happy to install them for no charge.

Condition--------------------------------------------------------

Exterior - It's really in great condition. It shows what I would consider to be substantially less wear than your average SUV from 2004. There are no dents on the exterior though one of thetail lights is cracked and I'll replace that. You wouldn't notice if I didn't tell you though.  There are some scratches but nothing excessive and nothing that jumps out at you. You need to look for them and since the truck is silver it's all hidden.

Rust: there is none. Not on the bottom of the doors, not on the edges of the wheel wells, no where. I believe Volvo galvanizes their cars for rust resistance. A lot of parts are aluminum and plastic as well.

The worst sign of wear on the outside is the wheels. They're not bad but they show 9 years worth of wear. They still clean up really nice though.

Interior - Awesome condition. The dash looks new. The leather shows superficial creasing but no actual cracking. The carpet can use a cleaning but is also in overall great shape. The interior is above average. Our kid is only 21 months old so he's never been in the car out of a seat. Ergo the vehicle hasn't been used and abused by a kid.

Mechanics - The engine and transmission are great. The engine makes no noises and shows no signs of slowing down.  The transmission shifts firmly and quick.  I don't know if it was ever rebuilt but I would guess that it was at some point.  I'd probably replace the spark plugs at some point but it's not missing or anything. The transmission shifts without any issues.  Front brake pads will need replacing at some point but aren't scraping and there are no brake issues.  I just know it will be eventually due for service.

We have had this vehicle for a little over two years and other than a dead battery (which we replaced) it hasn't given us any trouble at all.  It does have a code for an EVAP purge valve but this is a cheap, common fix and I'm having it done this week.  So you won't have to worry about anything.  Take it and drive it...

Volvo might join the tide of automakers turning to hybrids and PHEVs

Sun, Jul 28 2024

Volvo had been the clearest and most direct of all automakers about switching to a purely electric lineup.  Less than a year after getting the XC40 Recharge to market, on March 2, 2021, the company wrote that it "intends to only sell fully electric cars and phase out any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids." Two years later, with the C40 on dealer lots and the EX90 and EX30 in the pipeline, CFO Bjorn Annwall removed the wiggle room of "intends" by pledging Volvo won't "sell a single car" that isn't purely electric after after 2030, emphasizing the target to Automotive News with, "There's no ifs, no buts." Problem is, there are always ifs and buts, and Volvo might be the next automaker needing a tactical retreat to deal with them. After speaking to members of Volvo's U.S. dealer body, Automotive News reports a softening of the 2030 target. The most Volvo has said publicly came from CEO Jim Rowan, who told analysts during a recent investor webcast that because the EV transformation is going to take time to scale, hybrid powertrains could "form a solid bridge for our customers that are not ready to move to full electrification." According to AN, an anonymous insider said plug-in hybrids could take the lead for the next 10 years as global governments and global markets align on electric vehicles. If this turns out to be the case, Volvo would join a strengthening trend as automakers rush to develop hybrids and PHEVs to launch in the next three years.   Volvo would also be well positioned for the turn, considering buyer sentiment to the hybrids and PHEVs it's sold for many years now. The SPA1 platform supporting every Volvo with an internal combustion engine remains sound. Given development dollars and improvements in battery technology, there's no reason Volvo couldn't ride an evolution of the architecture into the next decade, and it can also take advantage of platforms and toolkits from parent company Geely. Only a year ago, Geely and Renault agreed on a joint venture to invest 7 billion euros for researching new technologies to make non-hybrid and hybrid gas engines more efficient.  This is clearly what U.S. dealers want based on their comments to AN, one retailer going so far as to say, "We will have to [stick with hybrids], or we will die."  Short term, Volvo's enduring the same pain felt by other automakers.

Junkyard Gem: 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon

Sat, May 18 2024

Volvo began selling brick-shaped rear-wheel-drive station wagons in the United States with the 145 in the 1968 model year, continuing the tradition with the 200, 700 and 900 series wagons and all the way through the very last 1998 V90s. The benefits of front-wheel-drive proved impossible for those Goteborgers to resist, though, and so the 850 was developed. The 850 sedan first appeared in the United States as a 1993 model, with the wagon version following in 1994. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those first-year 850 wagons, found in a Colorado Springs self-service yard recently. The 850 wasn't the first production Volvo with front-wheel-drive (the 1986 Volvo 480 beat it to European showrooms), but it was the first one available on our continent. The base 1994 Volvo 850 wagon for the U.S. market had a 2.4-liter DOHC straight-five rated at 168 horsepower and 162 pound-feet, but this car has the turbocharged version with its 222 horses and 221 pound-feet. American buyers of the 1994 Volvo 850 had the choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Most took the automatic. This car is a loaded model with power sunroof and other goodies in addition to the slushbox, so its MSRP was $30,985 (about $66,194 in 2024 dollars). This was a bit less than a similarly equipped 960 wagon (which listed at $34,950, or $74,665 after inflation). The antiquated but reliable 240 wagon had been discontinued the year before, with the 740 wagon getting the axe the year before that). This car just made it past the 200,000-mile mark during its career on the road. That's respectable, though I've found discarded Volvos that made it beyond 400,000 miles (and one that got to 631,999). The interior looked pretty good before someone smashed all the windows. Perhaps vandalism sent a running car to this place. Someone was kind enough to write down the security code on the factory radio. Drive safely. For those of you who hate to commute but adore driving.

Volvo XC40 delayed because it's too big for its own good?

Thu, 11 Jul 2013

As fuel prices rise and greenhouse gases poke holes in the ozone, big, gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles are becoming less popular as smaller, cleaner vehicles, such as crossovers, gain market share. Volvo is late to the small crossover party, though it wants to build the XC40 crossover to compete with the Land Rover Evoque. The only problem with that, Autocar reports, is that a suitable (read: small enough) platform for it is up to five years away, despite a hopeful photos of it in testing guise.
Volvo is currently developing a new platform, called SPA (Scaleable Platform Architecture), to underpin its next-generation of vehicles, such as the 2014 XC60 pictured above and the S60 sedan, which is likely the smallest vehicle that would be able to use the new platform. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be a quick fix for the gaping hole in Volvo's lineup, and Geely, the Chinese budget car manufacturer that owns Volvo, is reportedly preparing to launch a mid-market brand that may or may not be sold outside of China.
Can't Swedish car manufacturers catch a break?
