Vehicle Overview
Long known for safe, solid sedans and wagons, Volvo joined the sport utility vehicle fray in 2003 with its car-based XC90. The Swedish automaker promised the ride and handling of a passenger car. Volvo also claimed that the XC90 would be the safest SUV on the market. It features a Roll Stability Control System. In a collision, the front suspension subframe is compatible with a regular car.
The premium midsize XC90’s chassis is based on the one used for Volvo’s S60 and S80 sedans. Available all-wheel drive permits operation in a variety of terrains, but the XC90 is not intended for serious offroad driving. When the front wheels begin to slip, up to 65 percent of engine power is diverted to the rear wheels.
For 2004, new 17-inch Aquarius alloy wheels are used, the flip-style key has an integrated remote control, and a leather gearshift knob has been added. V
Exterior
Chief Designer Peter Horbury calls the XC90’s appearance “masculine, but not macho; muscular, but not aggressive.” At 188.9 inches long overall, the XC90 is 3.4 inches longer than Volvo’s V70 wagon. A 112.6-inch wheelbase and wide track dimensions help enhance stability. Ground clearance is 8.6 inches.
The XC90’s styling features include tall taillamps, an accentuated V-shaped hood, a “cockpit-forward profile” and a dark, upright eggcrate grille. The 70/30-split tailgate flaunts a sporty angle.
Interior
Seating either five or seven people, the XC90 has a 40/20/40-split second-row bench. With the seven-passenger configuration, a child booster seat in the second row can slide forward, nearly between the front seats. Two separate seats make up the available third row. All seats except the driver’s may fold down.
The gauges and controls are angled slightly toward the driver. Options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a Road and Traffic Information (RTI) navigation system with a pop-up screen.
Under the Hood
A light-pressure turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder engine delivers 208 horsepower to a five-speed-automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on the T6, and the 2.5T model has optional AWD.
Safety
Volvo’s Roll Stability Control System employs a gyrosensor. If the rollover risk reaches a specified threshold, Dynamic Stability Traction Control is activated. Inflatable side curtain-type airbags drop down for all three rows of seats.
Driving Impressions
The gentle but capable XC90 is solid and refined and handles more like a taut European sedan. It reacts masterfully on twisting roads and functions with precise control.
Expect a smooth and solid ride as the base suspension irons out pavement imperfections.
The XC90’s acceleration is smooth and easy. Automatic-transmission shifts are smooth and it changes gears crisply. Other than a light growl on acceleration, the XC90 is quiet.

Ward's announces 10 Best Engines 2015
Wed, Dec 10 2014Ward's Auto has named its 10 Best Engines for 2015, covering a range of powerplants from fuel-sippers to fire-breathers. As with past years, forced-induction reigns supreme, with seven of the ten engines featuring a turbo or supercharger. This year is slightly different, though, as two of the seven blown engines are turbocharged three-cylinder mills, from the Ford Fiesta and Mini Cooper. They're joined by the 2.0-liter turbo four from the Volvo S60, the 1.8-liter turbo four from the Volkswagen Jetta and the 2.0-liter boxer from the Subaru WRX. BMW and Chrysler were the only marques to be named to this year's list twice, with the electric motor from the i3 joining the Mini's three-pot, and the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee repping the diesel crowd, alongside a certain supercharged monster. Hyundai also took a prize with a zero-emissions powertrain, with the Tucson FCV's 100-kilowatt fuel cell making the list (apparently Ward's is quite generous with what it deems an "engine"). Rounding out the list are two Autoblog favorites, each displacing 6.2 liters, but producing their power very differently. On the one hand, Chevrolet's overhead-valve, 455-horsepower V8, found in the Corvette, makes its power the old fashioned way. And in the other corner, we have one of the most exciting engines of the year – the 707-hp, 6.2-liter, supercharged Hellcat V8, featured so prominently in the Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat. "We spend a lot of time reading the powertrain tea leaves throughout the auto industry, and we're proud that this year's list is a microcosm of all the latest innovation coming from automakers," said Ward's Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter in a statement. "It's not just a list for enthusiasts or for environmentalists," he says. "There's something for every vehicle shopper and every budget. All the powertrains on this list deliver a first-rate driving experience," Winter added. Scroll down for the full list from Ward's, and let us know which engines you think belong and which should have been included in this year's rankings. Ward's 10 Best Engines of 2015 Announced by Penton's WardsAuto Honorees span most diverse and technically advanced engines in 21 years of recognized powertrain excellence SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Penton's Wards 10 Best Engines of 2015 have been announced.
2015 Volvo XC90 is the Swedish future
Tue, 26 Aug 2014It's been months since the Concept XC Coupe debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, Volvo's last show car previewing its all-new 2015 XC90. But the production model is finally here after years of development, and it signals the future of the Swedish automaker with its Scalable Product Architecture modular platform and cutting-edge new engine family.
The 2015 XC90 carries all-new styling, but is still familiar up front, with the company's logo slashing diagonally through its prominent, upright grille. Like the concept, it carries T-Shaped LED running lights through the headlights. The company calls them the "Thor's Hammer" design, an evocative designation that we think is fantastic. Under that new front end is a choice of two quite powerful, but very efficient powertrains. The standard XC90 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged engine with all-wheel drive making an impressive 316 horsepower. Or if buyers want to be a little greener and more powerful, there is the XC90 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid with the same engine, albeit augmented with an electric motor to produce a staggering 400 hp.
The exterior styling is crisp, if not quite as sensual as Volvo's latest concepts, but we think the interior is the real star here, with a dashboard that looks like it came out of a Herman Miller catalog and a unique vertically oriented infotainment screen integrated into its center stack, perhaps taking a cue from Tesla. If the cabin feels as good as it looks, we think a lot of sales are going to be won inside.
Volvo confirms return of the wagon with V60 headed to US
Wed, 27 Mar 2013Turns out that promised new production Volvo model for the United States is indeed the V60 wagon, as we had previously predicted. And it's not terribly surprising, as Volvo has a long and storied history of wagon sales in the US, from the old, loveable 240 to the more recent high-performance V70R. And yet the automaker hasn't had a proper non-XC, non-crossover-style wagon in the US since it pulled the V70 away at the end of the 2010 model year.
"The new Volvo V60 is for people who want the handling of a dynamic sports sedan but need the versatility of a wagon," says Volvo, highlighting the reason many of us on the Autoblog team harbor such fondness for wagons in general.
Volvo is currently showing off the R-Design package for its entire model line, including the V60, at the New York Auto Show. We don't know for sure if the V60 will launch with the R-Design package or if it will come at a later date, and we also see no mention of a Polestar edition, though we're hopeful.
